RRS PMO, YEKA, Addis Ababa (2026)

An irrigation project in Qallu Woreda of South Wollo Zone in Amhara state has been inaugurated with the presence of Zonal Administrators, RRS-PMO management and staff and local communities.

The project, which is expected to directly embrace 420 local beneficiaries, has the capacity to irrigate 300 hectares of land and enable them harvest three times a year.

RRS-PMO provided a generator of highest volt, a water pump and installed water pipe to the reservoir, not to mention the technical support provided by the project staff.

The local community paved a 3 km road, which is of high importance to transport different machines to the site as well as participated in the construction of houses meant to shelter the generator and water pipes.

RRS DG Teyiba Hassen, IKEA-F CEO Per Haggenes, Somali state delegates and UNHCR Ethiopia Rep Andrew Mbogori have visited solar mini-grid and solar pumped irrigation farming run by refugees and hosts at Melkadida.

The visit is part of the high level tour to the Melkadida refugee operation in Somali state of Southern Ethiopia.

IKEA funded energy projects are providing alternative power supply to refugees and hosts thereby helping them improve their livelihood.

Refugees & Returnees Service Director General Teyiba Hassen and IKEA Foundation CEO Per Haggenes are paying a visit to Melkadida refugee operation.

They are joined by delegates of the Somali regional government and UNHCR Ethiopia representative.

They are looking into IKEA-funded development projects benefitting both refugees and hosts.

Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) Director General Teyiba Hassen held a meeting with World Bank Senior Operations Officer to Ethiopia Mohamed Khidir Abdel-Razig.

Teyiba thanked the Bank for its contribution thus far and called on to diversify its support to better respond to the needs of refugees and host communities.

Mohamed affirmed the Bank’s will to keep working with the Government of Ethiopia as a whole and RRS in particular on matters of refugees and hosts and strengthen its support to the refugee response in Ethiopia.

RRS DG held a meeting with the Benishagul-Gumuz State Vice President Mr. Getahun Abdisa
August 22, 2023, Assosa,

Refugees & Returnees Service - RRS Director General Mrs. Teyba Hasssen and Deputy Director General Mr. Biruhtesfa Mulugeta held a meeting with the Benishangul Regional State Vice President Mr. Getahun Abdisa to address matters of mutual concern.

The primary topics of discussion were the refugee situation in the region and the recent influx from Sudan. During the meeting, RRS DG expressed gratitude to the regional government for their unwavering support and the creation of a conducive environment for collaboration between the two parties.

They also deliberated on the necessary conditions for settling the new arrivals in a protected and secure environment.

RRS DG & Deputy DG Visited the Refugee Operation in Benishangul Region
August 21, 2023,

Refugees & Returnees Service - RRS Director General, Mrs. Teyba Hassen and Deputy Director General, Mr. Bruhtesfa Mulugeta paid a visit to the refugee operation in the Benishangul Region. The purpose of their visit was to assess the situation and ensure effective coordination in providing assistance to the new arrivals.

During their visit, they observed the service areas constructed for the Sudanese emergency response in the Kurmuk area and discussed coordination efforts with the Woreda administration. The DG thanked the Kurmuk Woreda administration for its efforts and coordination with RRS in providing assistance to refugees and asylum seekers at a time of dire need.

The visit also included a stop at Tsore and Sherkole refugee camps, where the DG and Deputy DG had an introductory meeting with the camp management teams.

Overall, the visit aimed to assess the refugee operation in the Benishangul Region, discuss coordination efforts, and show support for the ongoing emergency response.

RRS, UNHCR, local authorities & partners visit the joint response to refugees from Sudan

18 Aug. 2023 - Addis Ababa: Refugees & Returnees Service - , UNHCR Ethiopia, local authorities and partners visited the border area of Metema in Amhara region to review the joint response to refugees from Sudan.

They conducted an assessment for the expansion of the reception capacity at the transit center in Kumer.

It is to be recalled that refugees from Sudan are flocking to Ethiopia following the conflict there.

As Ethiopia is hosting large number of refugees, it is high time for donors to mobilize resources to respond to their needs.

RRS DG exchanges views with Regional Refugee Coordinator on issues of mutual concern

17 Aug. 2023 - Addis Ababa: Refugees and Returnees Service Director General Teyiba Hassen exchanged views with Regional Refugee Coordinator Nathan Tidwell of the U.S Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM) on issues of mutual concern.

In her talks with Tidwell, Teyiba stressed on the need to redouble efforts and strengthen emergency food distribution for persons of concern where he took note of the call and assured the DG of his Bureau’s readiness to do so.

The two have also discussed ways of diversifying resources by mobilizing a broad range of funders to deal with the ever dwindling humanitarian and development support from the international community.

They had candid discussion and looked into areas of mutual cooperation to augment the good ties between RRS and PRM.

RRS DG hosts ICRC Protection Coordinator to Ethiopia

15 Aug. 2023 - Addis Ababa: Refugees and Returnees Service Director General Teyiba Hassen hosted the Protection Coordinator of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Kristina von Arx at her office.

The two discussed ways to better protect persons of concern (PoCs) and agreed to ink a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration between RRS and ICRC.

The DG and the Coordinator had fruitful time, which resulted in mutual understanding for the common good.

A National Consultation Towards the Implementation of the Djibouti Declaration on Education in Ethiopia is happening in Bishoftu town.

The Declaration on Quality Education for Refugees, Returnees and Hosts intends to increase refugee self-reliance by emphasizing on quality and inclusive education.

Speaking on the event, RRS DG Teyiba Hassen called on relevant actors to work hand in glove and mobilize resources to curb lack of funds to address the educational needs of refugees and hosts.

RRS DG hosts UNHCR Ethiopia Representative @ her office

08 August 2023 - Addis Ababa: Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) Director General Teyiba Hassen held an introductory meeting with the incoming UNHCR Ethiopia Representative Andrew Mbogori at her office.

The two discussed matters of mutual concern in the Ethiopia refugee operation with a focus on enhancing bilateral engagements and partnerships.

They also talked about ways of strengthening the refugee operation in finance and logistics through mobilizing resources from a wide range of funders.

The senior officials also discussed lifting the suspension of food ration for refugees and resuming its distribution the sooner possible.

The two discussed matters of mutual interest in the Ethiopia refugee operation, including way forwards to resume food distribution to refugees.
