🏳️🌈 Pride Month Message for the Ethiopian LGBTQIA+ Community
To our beautiful, bold, and resilient Ethiopian LGBTQIA+ community — this Pride Month, we celebrate you.
We honor your existence, your courage, and your truth in a world that may not always see or understand you. Pride is not just about rainbow flags and parades — it's about visibility in the face of silence, love in the face of fear, and power in the face of oppression. It’s about standing tall, even when the world asks you to shrink.
We know that for many LGBTQIA+ Ethiopians, being open about your identity can carry risks. Some of you walk quietly, carefully, and invisibly. Others push boundaries with fierce determination. Both paths are brave. Both deserve respect. Pride doesn’t require a stage or a celebration — it starts in the heart, in the act of saying: “I am worthy, I am whole, I am enough.”
In our culture that deeply values tradition, family, and faith, being LGBTQIA+ can feel like a painful contradiction. But you are not a contradiction — you are a part of Ethiopia’s rich tapestry, just as valid and valuable as anyone else. Your love, your identity, your story — they belong here too.
To the young person afraid to speak their truth — we see you. To the activist organizing in the shadows — we thank you. To the artist, the poet, the parent, the friend — we celebrate you.
This month, and every month, remember:
You are not alone.
Your existence is resistance.
Your pride is a form of power.
Let us continue to build safe spaces, amplify each other’s voices, and hold onto hope. Change may be slow, but it is possible — and it begins with each of us choosing love over fear.
Happy Pride, Ethiopia.
Keep shining, keep rising, and never stop being exactly who you are.
With love and solidarity,
