A Plea for Humanitarian Aid for Victims of Communal Violence in Southern Ethiopia

The Konso and Alle ethnic communities in southern Ethiopia have peacefully co-existed alongside each other for hundreds of years. They have tilled farm plots and built houses in contiguous localities as one and come to each other’s help at times of need. The kins
hip network that binds them together has enhanced their capacity to cooperate and thrive as they have stuck together through thin and thick. Sadly, what started out as a minor skirmish over ownership of farming land eventually grew into a bitter conflict that wreaked havoc on both communities. A total of 87 people have lost their lives and 81 more suffered appalling bodily injuries. In addition, over 2000 houses were burned to the ground, including houses of worship. Substantial acreage of farm plots burgeoning with subsistence and fodder crops used to feed livestock have also been reduced to ashes. Upon losing their livelihoods, upwards of 20,000 have fled their devastated villages and are currently in need of food, water, and shelter. Consequently, the displaced are also at an increased risk of being infected with the Coronavirus as precautionary measures cannot be enforced in their new makeshift spaces. We, therefore, make an urgent plea on behalf of these men, women, and children compelled to live in such wretched conditions on account of circumstances beyond their control. በደቡብ ኢትዮጵያ የሚገኙት የኮንሶና የአሌ ማህበረሰቦች ለዘመናት በሰላም አብረው ኖረዋል። ኩታ ገጠም በሆኑ መንደራት አንድ ላይ አርሰዋል፤ ቤቶች ገንብተዋል፤ በችግር ጊዜ እርስ በርስ ተረዳድተዋል። ለዘመናት በጋብቻ ተጋምደዋል፤ በሥጋ ዝምድናም ተሳስረዋል። በዚህ መልኩ በተፈጠረ የጋራ ማንነት የተነሣም ሲተባበሩና ክፉና ደጉንም አብረው አሳልፈዋል።
ይሁንና ባሳለፍነው ዓመት ሐምሌ ወር በድንገት በመሬት ይገባኛል ሰበብ የተፈጠረ ተራ አለመግባባት ወደ ከረረ ግጭት አድጎ በነዚህ ማህበረሰቦች ላይ የከፋ ጉዳት ሊደርስ ችሏል። በአጠቃላይ ከሁለቱም ወገን 87 ሰዎች ለህልፈተ-ሕይወት የተዳረጉ ሲሆን፤ 81 የሚሆኑት ለከባድ የአካል ጉዳት ተዳርገዋል። በተጨማሪም በቤተ-እምነቶችን ጨምሮ 2000 ቤቶች ተቃጥለዋል። በበርካታ ሄክታር በሚለካ የእርሻ መሬት ከነምግብ ሰብሎችና የእንስሳት መኖ ዶግ አመድ ሆነዋል። በዚህ ጭካኔ በተሞላበት አኳኋን ቤት ንብረታቸውን ያጡ ከ20000 በላይ የሚሆኑ ወገኖቻችን ከቀያቸው ተፈናቅለው፤ በአሁኑ ሰዓት ለምግብ፣ ለውሃና ለመጠለያ እጦት ተዳርገዋል። አሁን ባሉበት ሁኔታም ከማንም በላይ ዓለማችንን እያስጨነቀ ላለው የኮሮና ወረርሽም በእጅጉ የተጋለጡ ናቸው።
እነዚህ ከቁጥጥራቸው በላይ በሆኑ ሁኔታዎች ምክንያት በከፋ ችግር ውስጥ የሚገኙ ወገኖቻችንን ለማገዝ የእርዳታ ጥሪያችንን እያቀረብን፤ እርስዎ አቅምዎ በሚፈቅደው ልክ የሚያበረክቱት አንድም ይሁን ሁለት ብር በተቸገሩ ወገኖቻችን ሕይወት ላይ ትልቅ ለውጥ ከማምጣት ረገድ የሚኖረው ሚና ከፍ ያለ እንደሚሆን ልንጠቁም እንወዳለን። ለሚያደርጉት አስተዋጽዖም በተጎዱ ወገኖቻችን ስም አስቀድመን የላቀ ምስጋናችንን እናቀርባለን።
