A Historic Milestone for Ethiopia and Africa
🇪🇹
On September 9, 2025, Ethiopia proudly inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), now the largest hydroelectric dam in Africa. After over 14 years of dedicated construction, this monumental $5 billion project on the Blue Nile boasts an impressive installed capacity of over 5,000 MW.
The GERD has more than doubled Ethiopia's electricity generation capacity and has the potential to facilitate power exports across the region, addressing the current roughly 10 GW electricity demand and improving access for the 50% of the population still lacking reliable electricity.
This achievement represents not only a national triumph but also a beacon of hope for regional collaboration. In our journey towards progress, it is essential that we prioritize the well-being of all nations involved.
A true testament to the resilience and dedication of the Ethiopian people, the GERD marks a significant step towards a brighter and more sustainable future.
