Launch Workshop on Strengthening Civil Society Capacity for Children's Rights and Promoting Safeguarding (PSEAH) in the Amhara Region
Hiwot Ethiopia officially launched two new projects the Civil Society Strengthening Programme for Children's Rights and the Strengthening Safeguarding Systems, Organizational Capacity, and Leadership Commitment of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the Amhara Regionat a project launch workshop held in Debre Berhan on 23 July 2026.
The workshop brought together representatives from regional government bureaus, the Bahir Dar City Administration, and civil society organizations operating in the Amhara Region. Their participation demonstrated a shared commitment to strengthening children's rights, safeguarding systems, and collaboration among key stakeholders.
The workshop was officially opened by H.E. Mrs. Zena Getachew, Deputy Head of the Amhara Region Women and Youth Affaires Bureau, following welcoming remarks delivered by Mr. Getaalem Kassa, Executive Director of Hiwot Ethiopia.
In her opening remarks, H.E. Mrs. Zena Getachew expressed her appreciation for the two projects and emphasized their importance in strengthening child rights and safeguarding systems in the region. She reaffirmed the Bureau's commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the projects and encouraged Hiwot Ethiopia to mobilize additional resources to address other pressing challenges affecting children, youth and communities across the Amhara Region.
The two projects were presented by Mr. Alemu Tessema, Program Director, and Mr. Abera Wondemu, Safeguarding Project Coordinator and Safeguarding Focal Person, respectively. They provided participants with an overview of the projects' objectives, expected outcomes, implementation approaches, and the roles of key stakeholders.
During the discussion session, participants actively engaged by raising questions, sharing constructive feedback, and offering valuable reflections. They expressed their commitment to collaborating with Hiwot Ethiopia and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the two projects.
The workshop concluded with closing remarks delivered by Mr. Mulegeta Mekuria, Civil Society Organizations Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Expert at the Amhara Region Finance Bureau, who appreciated the initiative and emphasized the importance of strong partnerships, accountability, and coordinated efforts to achieve sustainable results for children and communities in the region.

Ethiopia Launches Two Projects to Advance Child Rights and Strengthen Safeguarding Systems
Hiwot Ethiopia conducted a project launching (kick-off) workshop at Azzeman Hotel in Addis Ababa on July 7, 2026, to officially launch two strategic projects: “Civil Society Strengthening for Children’s Rights” and “Strengthening Safeguarding Systems, Organizational Capacity, and Leadership Commitment for Civil Society Organizations.”
The projects aim to strengthen civil society organizations’ capacity, promote child rights, improve safeguarding practices, and enhance collaboration among government institutions, CSOs, children, and other stakeholders. The workshop brought together representatives from the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, the Authority for Civil Society Organizations, child-led initiatives, child-centered social accountability structures, district-level government representatives, CSOs, and other partners.
The event was opened with welcoming remarks by Mr. Getaalem Kassa, Executive Director of Hiwot Ethiopia, and Mr. Yenebeb Tamer, CRG Program Manager at Save the Children. It was officially inaugurated by the Chief Executive Officer of the Child Protection Department at the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs. Participants appreciated Hiwot Ethiopia’s commitment, expertise, and capacity to address challenges affecting children, girls, women, and other vulnerable groups through community-based interventions and national-level engagement.
During the discussion, participants highlighted the importance of conducting assessments, strengthening coordination with relevant ministries, aligning interventions with government laws and procedures, contributing to national safeguarding frameworks, and using evidence-based data for child-focused advocacy, including “Investing in Children for Better Child Rights Outcomes.”
Hiwot Ethiopia welcomed the recommendations and committed to incorporating participants’ feedback into project implementation. The launching workshop marked an important step toward building stronger safeguarding systems, accountable civil society structures, and improved protection of children and vulnerable groups in Ethiopia.

# Project agreement:
On 25 June 2026, Hiwot Ethiopia signed a Project Operational Agreement with the Tigray Bureau of Finance and Resource Coordination (Aid Mobilization and Coordination Directorate), the Tigray Bureau of Justice, the Tigray Bureau of Social Affairs and Rehabilitation, and the Tigray Bureau of Women Affairs. The agreement enables the implementation of the project “Strengthening Safeguarding and PSEAH Systems among CSOs in Tigray Regional State,” which will be carried out from June 2026 to 31 January 2029.

Hiwot Ethiopia Signed a Three-Year Project to Strengthen Children’s Rights and Safeguarding in the Amhara Region
Bahir Dar, Ethiopia – Hiwot Ethiopia has officially signed a project implementation agreement with the Amhara Regional State Finance Bureau, Justice Bureau, and Women, Children and Social Affairs Bureau to implement a three-year initiative entitled “Strengthening Civil Society for Children’s Rights and Promoting Safeguarding/PSEAH for the Well-being of Vulnerable Groups.”
The project will be implemented from January 2026 to December 2028 with financial support from Save the Children and the Social Development Direct (SDD). The initiative aims to strengthen child rights governance, enhance safeguarding systems, and promote the protection and well-being of vulnerable children, women, and other at-risk groups across the Amhara Region.
The project focuses on three major intervention areas:
• Promoting Advocacy and Lobbying for Children’s Rights
• Strengthening Child Rights Structures and Child-Led Initiatives
• Enhancing Safeguarding and PSEAH Capacity of Civil Society Organizations
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Hiwot Ethiopia emphasized that the project will contribute to creating safer environments for children and vulnerable groups while strengthening the role of civil society organizations in promoting children's rights, accountability, and safeguarding standards. The collaboration with regional government bureaus is expected to enhance coordination, sustainability, and local ownership of project outcomes.

General Assembly Meeting
Hiwot Ethiopia conducted its 2026 Annual General Assembly meeting at AZMEN Hotel in Addis Ababa in 26 March 2026. The meeting brought together General Assembly members, Board members, and staff of the organization, all of whom actively participated in the discussions and deliberations.
Mrs. Aynalem Melesse, President of the General Assembly, officially opened the meeting by warmly welcoming all participants and highlighting the importance of collective engagement in advancing the organization’s mission.
Following the opening remarks, Mrs. Tsehaye W/Michael, Chairperson of the Board, presented a comprehensive report on the major accomplishments achieved by the Board of Directors during the 2025 fiscal year. Her presentation outlined key milestones, strategic decisions, and governance efforts undertaken to strengthen the organization’s impact.
The General Assembly members then engaged in detailed discussions on the organization’s overall performance in 2025, including the progress made by both the Board and the management team. As part of the session, participants reviewed the external audit report conducted by Tesfaye Gelu Mebrate Authorized Audit Firm (Ethiopia) in association with Chartered Certified Accountants (UK). In addition, the annual program and operational progress report was presented by Mr. Getaalem Kassa, Executive Director of the organization.
After these presentations, members actively contributed to the session by raising questions, providing constructive feedback, and offering valuable recommendations to further enhance the organization’s performance and accountability.
At the beginning of the meeting, a special moment was dedicated to announcing and celebrating the 30th anniversary of Hiwot Ethiopia. The milestone was marked with a cake-cutting ceremony, symbolizing three decades of commitment and service to improving the lives of children and youth.
The meeting concluded with closing remarks delivered by the President of the General Assembly, who appreciated the active participation of all attendees and encouraged continued collaboration in achieving the organization’s goals.

5th Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Week
Hiwot Ethiopia participated in the 5th Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Week, organized by the Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Council (ECSOC) and the Authority for Civil Society Organizations (ACSO), which was held from March 5–7, 2026 in Addis Ababa. The event was conducted under the theme “Self-Reliance: A Pillar for Sustainable Peace and Inclusive Development.”
The event brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including civil society organizations, government officials, development partners such as donors and bilateral agencies, private sector representatives, and individual participants. The platform created an important opportunity for experience sharing, networking, and dialogue on strengthening the role of civil society in promoting peace, democratic governance, and sustainable development.
During the three-day event, Hiwot Ethiopia actively participated in various activities, including the opening ceremony, exhibition sessions, panel discussions, and the closing ceremony. The organization also showcased its key programs, achievements, and community interventions through an exhibition booth.
Hiwot Ethiopia’s exhibition attracted significant attention from a wide range of visitors, including government officials, representatives of the private sector, donors, civil society partners, and members of the public. The exhibition was interactive and informative, providing visitors with a clear understanding of the organization’s work and impact in supporting vulnerable communities.
Participation in this national event provided Hiwot Ethiopia with a valuable opportunity to strengthen partnerships, increase organizational visibility, and exchange experiences with other civil society actors and stakeholders. It was also an important learning experience for the organization to engage in such a large-scale national platform that promotes collaboration, knowledge sharing, and collective action among civil society organizations.
