🚲 Critical Mass Addis Ababa – September Update 🚲

Hey cyclists!

Due to the holiday season, Critical Mass Addis Ababa will take a little break this September.
So, there will be no Critical Mass ride this month as we take some time to enjoy the holidays and recharge.

But don’t worry, we’ll be back in October with new energy, fresh wheels, and the same love for cycling! 🚴🏽‍♀️🚴🏽‍♂️

Every bicycle trip is a small climate action.

In a city facing growing congestion and rising fuel costs, cycling offers a simple alternative: no fuel, no tailpipe emissions, and very low running costs.
Choosing a bicycle instead of a motorized trip can help reduce transport-related emissions and air pollution, while making everyday mobility more affordable and accessible.

As our cities face a changing climate, we need solutions that are local, practical, and sustainable. The bicycle is one of them.
This project, “From Bike Lanes to Climate Action,” was implemented by Egre Menged Impact (EMi) with support from the Climate and Development Knowledge Network(CDKN).

Learning to ride is just the beginning.

For this project, we didn’t just want women to learn how to ride; we wanted to build a community of women and youth who can learn, support others, and become leaders in cycling.

Through practical training, peer support, and hands-on learning, participants built skills in cycling, road safety, and bicycle care.
By training new trainers, we are creating knowledge that can be shared long after the project ends.

Sustainable change happens when people have the skills to pass it on.
During the project, more than 200 women got on a bicycle and tried cycling for the first time, with around 130 graduating from the training. Every new rider is one more woman showing that cycling belongs to her, too.

What happens when a woman gets on a bicycle for the first time?

She discovers a new way to move through her city, with more independence, confidence, and freedom. She gains a skill that can save time and transportation costs, open up opportunities, and challenge the idea that cycling is “not for women.”

Infrastructure is only the beginning.
Addis Ababa has invested in more than 100 km of bicycle infrastructure, but who is actually using it?
Our youth-led observation survey of 755 cyclists across three major corridors found that only 4.2% were women. At the same time, 83% of observed cycling trips were for commuting, work, or delivery, showing that bicycles are already an important part of everyday mobility and livelihoods.

The message is clear: building bike lanes is not enough. Women and youth also need the skills, confidence, safety, and support to use them.
That’s where this project comes in: turning infrastructure into real, inclusive impact.

This isn’t just training. It’s a movement.

Women and youth are turning cycling into climate action; learning, teaching, and leading towards a more inclusive, low-emission, and community-led Addis Ababa.

Through the project “From Bike Lanes to Climate Action: Youth-Led, Gender-Responsive Mobility in Addis Ababa,” Egre Menged Impact (EMi), with support from the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), worked with women and youth to build cycling skills, confidence and leadership, while generating youth-led evidence on who is using Addis Ababa’s growing bicycle infrastructure.

A big thank you to Leafy Bikes for making their Bike Academy available as a safe and welcoming training space for our sessions.
