From drought-prone landscapes to growing green fields, communities in Argoba Woreda are beginning to witness a remarkable transformation through the support of Cordaid Ethiopia.
During a field visit and project evaluation workshop held from 21 -22 May 2026, government officials highlighted the growing impact of the intervention on agriculture, irrigation access, environmental rehabilitation, and livelihoods.
Through nearly 12 kilometres of HDPE irrigation support, improved seed provision, poultry production, beekeeping, and land rehabilitation activities, farmers are now increasing productivity and creating sustainable income opportunities. Local authorities estimate that agricultural production in the woreda has increased by nearly 50 percent compared to previous years.
Farmers are becoming model farmers, vulnerable households are rebuilding resilience, and communities once affected by drought and migration pressures are beginning to see renewed hope.
In recognition of the organisation’s contribution, local officials honoured Cordaid Ethiopia with a certificate of recognition and traditional “GABE” blankets - a respected cultural symbol of dignity, honour, and appreciation.
From vulnerability to resilience, the transformation taking place in Argoba reflects the power of climate-resilient and community-driven development.

Field Visit Highlights Performance-Based Financing in Jimma 🇪🇹
On 4 May 2026, Cordaid Ethiopia hosted a field visit in Jimma to showcase the impact of its Performance-Based Financing (PBF) programme.
The mission welcomed Constant TCHONA, newly appointed West Africa Cluster Director, for an experience-sharing visit aimed at learning from Ethiopia’s implementation model and results on the ground.
The visit covered Seka Primary Hospital, Chokorsa Primary School, Sombo Health Centre, and Last Mile Project activities-offering a close look at how PBF is strengthening both health and education services.
Across sites, discussions focused on how performance-based financing is improving accountability, boosting local ownership, and enabling frontline institutions to take greater control of their results.
Constant highlighted the strong implementation experience in Ethiopia and noted that key lessons from the programme will inform similar approaches in West Africa. He particularly emphasised how PBF is strengthening public systems by empowering local leadership and improving service delivery outcomes.
A key takeaway from the visit was the high level of ownership demonstrated by facility leaders and staff-showing how results-based approaches can drive real system change at the local level.
This visit reaffirmed Cordaid Ethiopia’s commitment to practical learning, peer exchange, and strengthening public systems through results-driven programming in health and education.

From just 9 health facilities in 2015 to reaching over 7 million people today, Performance-Based Financing (PBF) is steadily transforming health systems across Oromia Region.
What began as a pilot initiative in Borena Zone has expanded across both pastoralist and agrarian settings, now covering 241 health centres, 851 health posts, and 23 hospitals. By 2021, the programme achieved blanket coverage in its target zones-ensuring no health facility was left behind.
This remarkable growth reflects not only scale, but also strengthened service delivery, improved accountability, and increased access to quality healthcare for communities that need it most.
These achievements and future priorities were recently reviewed during the Oromia Regional Steering Committee meeting, where key stakeholders-including the Regional Health Bureau, implementing zones, the Bureau of Finance, development partners, and Cordaid-came together to assess progress and guide the next phase.
Discussions focused on performance results, key indicators, operational research, and forward-looking strategies such as regional co-financing and risk-based verification. The meeting reaffirmed a shared commitment to sustaining impact and strengthening collaboration across all levels.
💡 From pilot to scale, this is what sustained partnership and results-based financing can achieve.

Empowering frontline heroes in Ethiopia
From March 24-27, Cordaid successfully delivered a refresher training for 75 health professionals from Bahir Dar City and North Achefer Woreda-58 of them women.
Beyond strengthening skills in Performance-Based Financing (PBF) and Community Health Information Systems (CHIS), the training highlighted the incredible dedication of female health workers. Some mothers attended with their babies on their backs-a powerful reminder of the resilience and commitment driving community healthcare.
Ultimately, this initiative reflects the impact of Cordaid and the tireless efforts of its field staff. It is more than a professional milestone-it is a testament to the transformative power of knowledge and the enduring strength of women who carry both their children and the future of their communities on their backs.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for their invaluable support in making this initiative possible. We also extend our sincere appreciation to our government partners-the North Gojjam and Bahir Dar Health Departments, and the North Achefer District Health Office-for their strong collaboration and leadership in organising this training alongside Cordaid.

Cordaid proudly stands wherever voices rise for women’s empowerment.

In that spirit, members of the Cordaid team took part in the Women’s Great Run of Ethiopia — an event organised by the Great Ethiopian Run and sponsored by Safaricom Ethiopia to promote women’s empowerment.

The day brought together women from different walks of life, all sharing the same road and the same message: women continue to shape communities, lead change, and inspire progress every day.

For Cordaid, joining the run was a simple yet meaningful way to affirm its commitment to gender equality and to recognise the strength, resilience, and contributions of women everywhere.

Thank you to everyone who ran while representing Cordaid and adding their voice to this collective moment.

Happy International Women’s Month once again.

Bi-Annual Review Meeting for the “Health System Strengthening through PBF” Project
On February 25–26, 2026, health leaders from across North Achefer and Bahir Dar City successfully concluded the Bi-Annual Review Meeting for the “Health System Strengthening through PBF” project. This essential gathering brought together facility representatives and regulators from regional, zonal, and district levels to evaluate collective progress. The primary goal was to ensure that performance-based financing moves beyond administrative metrics to create a genuine, high-quality impact on patient care across the implementation areas.
The sessions provided a transparent platform to celebrate major achievements in service quality while engaging in “real talk” about the practical challenges faced on the ground. Rather than simply reviewing data, participants focused on the human element of healthcare delivery, sharing specific experiences to troubleshoot common hurdles and bridge gaps between rural and urban facilities. This collaborative approach turned individual obstacles into shared learning opportunities for everyone involved.
Looking ahead, the meeting established a clear and revitalized roadmap for the coming period. By strengthening the connection between frontline providers and regulators, the project has reinforced a unified strategy to ensure that every facility is empowered to deliver excellence. With this renewed commitment, the next stage of the PBF project is set to transform every investment into a more resilient and accountable health system for the entire community.
