Addressing Family Planning Gaps in Ethiopia’s Somali Region

The Somali Region of Ethiopia continues to face significant challenges in access to family planning services. According to the 2019 Ethiopia Mini Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS), contraceptive use in the region remains among the lowest in the country, highlighting critical service gaps.

To help address this challenge, the Somali Regional Health Bureau, with support from the Consortium of Reproductive Health Associations (CORHA), organized a Comprehensive Family Planning training for Health Extension Workers from December 19–26, 2025, in Dire Dawa.

The training aimed to strengthen participants’ knowledge and understanding of family planning and to equip health extension workers with essential counseling and technical skills needed to deliver quality, client-centered family planning services at the community level.

💪 Strengthening frontline health workers is a key step toward improving equitable access to family planning and advancing reproductive health outcomes in underserved regions.

📢 Strengthening Partnerships for Better FP & SRHR Outcomes

With financial support from Spanish cooperation and UUNFPA Ethiopia CORHA convened a high-level national advocacy forum on integrated Family Planning (FP) and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

The forum brought together religious leaders from Christian and Muslim faiths from the Afar and Somali regions, representatives from the Ministry of Health and regional health bureaus, youth councils, and civil society organizations working on FP and SRHR.

Discussions highlighted the importance of respecting religious teachings and cultural values while delivering accurate health information. Religious leaders emphasized that there are no religious restrictions on family planning, noting that teachings such as breastfeeding for at least two years are aligned with child and maternal health.

The forum also shared successful international and local experiences, including collaboration with faith-based organizations in countries like Indonesia, Iran, and Egypt, and the development of a supportive "Fatwa" through engagement with Muslim communities.

🤝 By using a community-centered ecological approach—bringing together youth, religious leaders, government, and civil society—CORHA continues to promote inclusive and sustainable FP and SRHR advocacy.

Immediate Postpartum Family Planning (IPPFP) is a critical intervention aimed at preventing unintended and closely spaced pregnancies during the first 12 months after childbirth. In the Afar Region, modern contraceptive use remains low at 12.7% (Mini EDHS 2019), and the unmet need for postpartum family planning is high. Although the Regional Health Bureau has been working to strengthen FP integration across maternal and child health services, a shortage of trained midwifery professionals continues to limit access to quality PPFP services.

To address this gap, the Afar Regional Health Bureau, with support from the Consortium of Reproductive Health Associations (CORHA), organized Immediate Postpartum Family Planning (IPPFP) training for health workers from December 4–11, 2025, in Semera town. The training aimed to enhance knowledge and understanding of postpartum family planning among health service providers and equip providers with essential counseling and technical skills to deliver quality PPFP services.
