Newcastles of the World We bring Newcastles everywhere together in friendship, to share & exchange information and to develop projects of common interest. From this came a book.

The idea of bringing cities who share the name 'Newcastle' first came in 1996 from the Newcastle upon Tyne-based arts manager John Nicolaou, who created the 'Newcastle of the World United' project among Newcastles in the English-speaking world. However, with the initiative of Shinshiro, Japan the first Newcastle of the World Summit took place in that city in 1998 and the "Newcastles of the World"

organisation was truly born. To this day, this tradition is kept with the events held in Switzerland 2000, USA 2002, South Africa 2004 & 2010, UK (Newcastle-under-Lyme) 2006, Germany in 2008, UK (Newcastle upon Tyne) in 2012, Nove Hrady (Czech Republic in 2014, Newcastle, Ontario, Canada in 2016 and Shinshiro again in 2018. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 conference in Neuchatel Switzerland was postponed until 2022.

Newcastle upon Tyne was only one of six of our Newcastles of the World that took part in the Race (and Walk) for Peace this week. Here it was five amazing hours of a show of unity, community, solidarity and a sense of togetherness; over 300 participants, 42 volunteers, 9 performances with 75 performers, 6 dignitary guest speakers, stalls, henna, facepainting and balloons, hundreds…if not thousands of photographs and a fantastic evening of love, fun and entertainment, We would like to proudly announce that the Newcastle Peace Walk 26 and Concert for Peace was a phenomenal, huge success.

Yesterday, our friends in Shinshiro, the "Newcastle" in Japan, celebrated the anniversary of the historic battle of Nagashino-Sh*taragahara in 1575 with the annual dramatic battlefield festival.
The battle was the first war in Japan to use guns on a large scale. The Sh*taragahara Battlefield in Shinshiro acts as the stage for the festival, where a matchlock gun demonstration, warrior demonstration at the anti-cavalry fence, and other events took place as an insight into what the actual battle looked like. The event also serves as a memorial for the departed souls of the Warring States period in Japanese history.

May 25th was Memorial Day in the USA, remembering and honouring the brave men and women who died in the service of the country during wartime. As in previous years, the ceremony and parade in New Castle, Indiana was one of the most significant in the state. Speakers included Mayor Greg York (left in photo) and our Newcastles of the World friend Nate LaMar, Military Academy Liaison Officer (right).

Located in Shinshiro, our “Newcastle” in Japan, the Battle of Nagashino in 1575 was a historic battle during the country’s “Warring States” period by prominent military forces of the time. Each year a festival of flags adorned with the crests of the warrior families takes place in early May, also with matchlock gun brigades sporting samurai-style armour and helmets as they fire the ancient guns. There’s also thundering taiko drum performances. The whole spectacular event is an enactment designed to comfort the spirits of the fallen soldiers.
