Cada. Santo. Día.

🇬🇧 GOOD MORNING, EVERYBODY ❤️

This picture of Govert on one of his feeding rounds came to light today, and we wanted to share it with you all.

Every day, for around 15 years, Govert did his rounds through Molino del Agua. He became a familiar sight to those who visited the park — always walking the same paths, checking on his cats and making sure everyone was fed.

We miss that sight.

We miss him.

The cats miss him.

And we’re pretty sure the hedgehogs miss him too. ❤️

For everyone who has been following Govert’s case, Veronica will soon bring you an update. A great deal has happened on many fronts.

Among other things, Veronica was robbed — and later had a frightening encounter at the very same bin where Govert was attacked. She came face to face with, and was attacked by, the man she believes attacked Govert.

It was a chilling experience, and there is considerably more to tell.

We will share more information soon.

For now, though, we simply wanted to share this photograph and remember better days.

Govert, doing what Govert did. ❤️

Every. Single. Day.

🇪🇸 𝗩𝗘𝗡 𝗔 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗡 𝗡𝗢𝗦𝗢𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗦 🐾

Llegarás a conocerlos.

No necesitas experiencia.

🇬🇧 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗘 𝗪𝗔𝗟𝗞 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗨𝗦 🐾

We’re looking for a few passionate people to join our small family of feeders at Colonia Felina – Govert van de Laar, Molino del Agua.

Not hundreds of volunteers.

Just a few good people who genuinely care about cats and would like to become part of something meaningful.

The commitment is simple: one round a week.

About 1½ hours walking through the park and dunes, feeding the cats, checking that everyone is where they should be and keeping an eye out for anyone who may need help.

You’ll get to know them.

They’ll get to know you.

And before long, it stops feeling like something you volunteered to do and starts feeling like your cats are waiting for you. ❤️

Govert walked these paths and cared for these cats for many years. Today, a small group of us is continuing what he started.

But to make it sustainable, we need a few more pairs of feet on the path.

If you live in or around Torrevieja / La Mata, can give us one evening a week, and would like to be part of our little feeding family, send us a private message.

No experience necessary.

Just reliability, a pair of comfortable shoes and a heart for cats. 🐾

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗸𝘀! ❤️

Tekkie here — the oldest cat in the park, which obviously means I’m also the wisest, smartest and generally the one who knows how things should be done around here. 😌

I’m a dumpling — meaning I was dumped here — about 12 years ago. So yes, I’ve been around for a while.

Needless to say, I was one of Govert’s most loyal friends. I was always waiting for him, ready for some cuddles and, more importantly… the goodies.

Oh yes. The goodies. 😻

Life in the park goes on. There are lots of tourists around at the moment, and thankfully most of them are a friendly bunch. I keep an eye on everyone, obviously. Someone has to.

Veronica will also be sharing some updates about what’s happening with Govert’s case, so stay tuned over the next couple of days. There are things we’d like you to know.

Anyway, it’s getting late and, more importantly, it’s feeding time.

Priorities, folks.

See you soon ❤️

𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗟 — 𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗨𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦 🐾

Usually on Caturday, one of us from Govert’s colony gets to pop up here, introduce ourselves and tell you a little bit about life in Molino park.

Tonight, though, we have four unexpected little faces to introduce.

Meet the Dumplings. 😊

Three little girls and one little boy. One tricolour, two tortoiseshells and one tiny black gentleman.

About three months old.

And yes, they’re called the Dumplings for a reason.

Somebody dumped them by the entrance to Molino park.

These weren’t wild kittens born in the colony. They were tame, used to people and very clearly not made for suddenly finding themselves outside in a busy park, surrounded by adult colony cats, dogs, traffic and a world they knew absolutely nothing about.

At three months old, the Dumplings didn’t have much of a survival plan.

Actually, they didn’t have one at all.

Luckily, they were spotted quickly.

Leaving them there and hoping they would somehow become “street cats” wasn’t an option. So all four were collected and brought to Ellen's Cats - Sanctuary , where they’re now safe.

Four little lives somebody decided they no longer wanted.

And four little lives that, from that moment on, became somebody else’s responsibility.

They’re safe now. They’re fed, protected and getting everything they need to grow up healthy.

But please — if you have kittens you cannot keep, ask for help.

Don’t leave them in a park.

A cat colony is not a shelter, and tame three-month-old kittens are not equipped for life in the wild.

These four Dumplings were lucky.

The next ones might not be. ❤️🐾

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗸𝘀! 🐾

Y aunque probablemente no debería decirlo…

🇬🇧Hi folks!

It’s me, Nimeria, one of the many cats living in the park and the youngest of the adult cats around here.

I love a good grooming session and an even better head scratch from my feeders. And although I’m probably not supposed to admit it… Sheila is my favourite human. 🤫 She always seems to have treats hidden in her bag when she comes on her rounds, usually on Caturdays, so we’re a pretty perfect match.

If you ever visit the park, I’m one of the easiest cats to spot. You’ll usually find me hanging around near the entrance, keeping an eye on who’s arriving… and more importantly, whether they’re carrying snacks. 😸

So if you happen to see me, don’t be shy. Come and say hello. And if you just happen to have a few cat treats in your pocket… well, I certainly won’t complain.

Have a wonderful Caturday, everyone! ❤️🐾

🕷️ 𝗧𝗲𝗱𝗱𝘆 – 𝗘𝗹 𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗮́𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗟𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗼 🇪🇸

🕷️ Meet Teddy – The Guardian of the Secret Place 🇬🇧

At the park where we feed our colony cats, there’s a little spot we simply call The Secret Place.

Standing guard at the entrance is Teddy.

Now, Teddy may only be about the size of a kitten, but if you’re a mosquito, fly or unsuspecting grasshopper, he’s an absolute giant. 😄

Teddy is a banded garden spider, famous for building huge circular webs decorated with a distinctive white zigzag pattern. Scientists still aren’t completely sure why spiders make this decoration, but they believe it may help protect the web or even attract curious insects.

Despite his rather intimidating appearance, Teddy is completely harmless to people. In fact, he’s one of the park’s hardest-working pest controllers, quietly catching countless flies and mosquitoes every day.

We like to think Teddy is part of the welcoming committee. Before you meet the cats, you first have to get past him. 🕸️

Every creature has its place here. From spiders and insects to hedgehogs, birds and, of course, our colony cats, they all play a part in keeping this beautiful park full of life.

So here’s to Teddy… our eight-legged little guardian of the Secret Place. ❤️

🇪🇸 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗼𝘀,

Sí, ya es Caturday otra vez… y esta vez me toca a mí.

Me llamo Orio.

¿Yo? Yo me mantengo firme.

🇬🇧 𝗛𝗶 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲,

Yep, it’s Caturday again… and this time it’s me.

I’m Orio.

I have the advantage of being both black and white. No controversy, no politics… just a cat who somehow seems to be liked by everyone.

Five years old. Not bad for a cat who’s spent his entire life outdoors in a busy park where far too many people still think leash laws are just friendly suggestions.

Almost every evening there’s a dog that decides we’re part of the entertainment.

And when that happens, it’s usually the little kittens who end up paying the price.

Me? I stand my ground. After five years in Molino del Agua I’ve learned a trick or two. Let’s just say I’m not exactly an easy target.

I was born right here in the park, and Govert looked after me my entire life. May he rest in peace.

These days Veronica and the other volunteers continue to care for us. There’s always food, fresh water and someone looking out for us. Life goes on, even if it isn’t quite the same anymore.

So here I am. A confident black-and-white park cat, still keeping watch over my little corner of Molino del Agua.

And if you ever come to visit with your dog… please keep it on a lead. We call this park home too. ❤️

🐾 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥

No soy antipática.

Simplemente me gusta tomarme mi tiempo.

🇬🇧Hiya everybody!

Every Saturday evening, one of us will tell you a little about ourselves. We thought it might be nice if, before you meet us here beneath the pine trees, you already know who we are. And if you’re following our lives from your sofa somewhere else in the world… well, you’ll get to know us too.

Because we’re not just “the colony cats.”

We all have our own names, our own personalities, our own favourite hiding places… and we’d love for you to know us as individuals.

After all, friends notice when a friend hasn’t been around for a while.

Some of us belong beneath the pine trees. Others may one day discover that a sofa suits them rather well. And some friendships, it turns out, can exist from thousands of miles away.

So… who am I?

I’m Sara.

People walk past me every day. I usually watch them from a safe distance, of course. Some stop, sit quietly and say hello. Those are usually my favourite people. Others smile as they walk by… and every now and then someone sends their dog after me.

They don’t really scare me anymore, so I don’t worry too much about it.

I’ve called this little corner of Molino del Agua home for the past seven years. You’ll usually find me in what the humans call the Secret Place, sitting quietly and watching the world go by.

I’m not unfriendly.

I just like to take my time.

It takes a little while for me to decide whether you’re one of the good ones. But if I choose you, you’ll soon discover I’m actually one of the sweetest girls in the park.

So please say hiiiii in the comments and tell me where you’re following us from.

Perhaps one day we’ll meet here among the trees… and perhaps we’ll break biscuits together.

Until next Saturday,

Love,

Sara ❤️🐾

If you’d like to follow our journey, visit us, adopt one of us, or help care for us from afar, we’d love to hear from you. Just send us a message or you’ll find a link in our bio.

🇪🇸 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗼𝘀, ¡𝘀𝗼𝘆 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗮! 👋

🇬🇧 𝗛𝗶 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲, 𝗜’𝗺 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗮! 👋

I’ve been feeding the cats at Parque del Molino del Agua for over 10 years, and I can honestly say it’s one of the most rewarding things I do.

I’m part of the volunteer team at Colonia Felina – Govert van de Laar, and right now we’re looking for a few more people to join us, either as regular feeders or substitutes.

It takes just 1½–2 hours once a week (or more, if you catch the cat bug! 🐾). It’s a wonderful way to meet new people, enjoy one of the most beautiful parks in Torrevieja, get to know our furry locals, and make a real difference.

I’d love to welcome you to our little team. ❤️

And if volunteering isn’t really your thing, you can still ease your conscience by donating a bag of food instead—maybe even on a regular basis. ❤️ Details are in the comments.

Assault and Death of Govert van de Laar

Witness Appeal
𝗔𝗴𝘂𝗮𝘀 𝗡𝘂𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘀 – 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗼, 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝗷𝗮

📢 Before reading this statement and witness appeal, please follow this page and share this post. Every share increases the chance of reaching someone who may recognise the suspect, identify the driver who stopped that evening, or hold information that could assist the investigation. By following this page, you will also receive future updates as the investigation continues.

This statement has been prepared by and on behalf of Govert van de Laar’s family. Its purpose is to provide a factual account of the assault, the subsequent medical treatment and the ongoing witness appeal.

It reflects the family’s understanding of events, based on Govert’s own account and the information available at the time of publication.

Govert van de Laar (75) was a Dutch national who had lived in Torrevieja, Spain, for almost thirty years.

Together with his wife, Veronica, he dedicated nearly twenty years to caring for the abandoned community cats of Molino del Agua in La Mata. Through daily feeding, rescue, sterilisation and an adoption network in the Netherlands, it is estimated that almost 500 rescued cats found loving homes.

He is survived by his wife, Veronica, two daughters and two grandchildren.

At approximately 21:30 on 6 May 2026, after completing the evening feeding of the colony, Govert returned home and left his feeding bags there.

According to Govert, he then walked to the nearby waste collection point, where he saw a man using a stick to search through a rubbish bin. The man said something to him, to which Govert simply replied:

“No, thank you.”

Moments later, the man attacked him without warning.

According to Govert, following the initial assault, the attacker used the stick from the rubbish bin to strangle him.

The assault ended only when a white car appeared on Calle Hemingway, travelling eastbound from the north. The attacker immediately fled the scene on foot.

The driver stopped and asked Govert, in Spanish, whether he could take him home. Govert replied that he lived just around the corner, and the driver continued on his way.

Despite his injuries, Govert managed to return home. He went downstairs to the basement, where he often slept alongside colony cats that required isolation and special care.

Veronica found him the following morning after noticing blood on the floor and staircase.

On 7 May 2026, Govert attended Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja because of the severe pain he was experiencing. He was discharged after being told that there was nothing wrong.

Over the following days, his condition continued to deteriorate. On 11 May 2026, he attended the La Mata Health Centre, where medical staff called an ambulance to transfer him to Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja, where he was admitted.

Further examinations revealed seven fractured ribs, together with other serious injuries.

After more than three weeks in hospital, his condition deteriorated once again. On 3 June 2026, he was urgently transferred to Hospital General Universitario de Elche due to serious cardiac complications requiring specialist treatment.

Despite receiving intensive medical care, Govert died there on 7 June 2026.

The motive for the assault remains unknown. At the time of publication, no arrests have been publicly announced, and it is understood that the investigation remains ongoing.

Although Govert was widely known for his dedication to the community cats of Molino del Agua, there are currently no grounds to conclude that the assault was connected to his volunteer work or the cats. The family respectfully asks the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues.

𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘀:

* Male.
* Approximately 45–49 years old.
* Approximately 176 cm (5 ft 9 in) tall.
* Muscular, athletic build.
* Dark blond hair.
* Appeared to be of Eastern European origin.
* Remained calm throughout the assault, acting with confidence and control.
* Govert believed he may have had training or experience in physical combat.
* Last seen fleeing the scene on foot.

The family is particularly hoping to identify the driver of the white car that stopped immediately after the assault. He may have been the last independent person to speak with Govert before he returned home and may hold information that could assist the investigation.

If you recognise the suspect description, remember seeing a person matching it in the area that evening, witnessed anything unusual at approximately 21:30 on 6 May 2026, or believe you may know the identity of the driver of the white car, please send us a private message.

Any information that may assist the investigation will be treated in confidence and passed to the appropriate authorities.

Even the smallest detail could prove important.

The work of Colonia Felina - Govert van de Laar continues through the dedication of his family, friends and volunteers, who provide daily care for the community cat colony at Molino del Agua.

Future updates regarding the investigation, the witness appeal and the continuing work of the colony will be published on this page.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to read and share this statement.
