🌊 Marine SABRES wraps up its final General Assembly in Cork 🇮🇪

This week, the MarineSABRES consortium gathered at University College Cork for its final General Assembly. It marked the culmination of four years of work on marine biodiversity, ecosystem-based management and restoration across Europe.

Over three days, partners:
▶️ Tested the project’s Decision Support System hands-on, helping shape its final form
▶️ Shared results from the Demonstration Areas in the Tuscan Archipelago, Macaronesia and the Arctic
▶️ Held a joint session with the ICES Working Group on MPAs on supporting marine protected areas and restoration
▶️ Reflected on the project’s impact and what comes next

🎬 A special moment for us was the screening of Tides of Balance, the Marine SABRES documentary created by LifeWatch ERIC and directed by Fabrizio Lecce. It was wonderful to share it with the people whose work it portrays. Our colleague Eleonora Schulze-Battmann also presented how the documentary, the Serious Game Competitions and Marine SABRES in Fairs have brought the project to communities and schools across Europe.

Thank you to coordinator Emma Verling, Sustainability Institute, University College Cork, all partners and stakeholders. The work doesn’t end here! 🙌

At the end of September we joined the launch of a new, exciting project, , coordinated by CMMI - Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute: a three-year initiative to accelerate the restoration of marine and coastal ecosystems and the transition to a climate-neutral, competitive blue economy.

LifeWatch ERIC, in this context, leads the Innovation Ecosystem Capacity Building, with the objective of strengthening innovation ecosystems across three Regional Hubs, enabling collaboration with stakeholders and enhancing their capacities to adopt, scale, and integrate innovations.

A week in Paris with the community!

From 21 to 25 September, the OntoPortal Workshop took place in Paris hosted by the Observatoire de Paris - PSL and organised by OntoPortal-Astro. Representatives from the different portals across the network came together to discuss key topics shaping the future of OntoPortal:

🤖 New features with AI to provide users an easier access to semantic artefacts;

🗂️ Best practices and strategies to improve metadata quality and consistency and extend documentation;

🔗 Federated APIs: making it easier and more effective for different portals to talk to each other;

🎤 Public session with a user panel: an open conversation with the people who use the portals every day, to understand real needs and upcoming priorities;

🆕 New OntoPortal instances: the teams adopting the technology and the experiences coming up;

🔥 Intense days of exchange and ideas, strengthening a community that is increasingly active and collaborative!

🌊 More than 100 people stopped by our "MarineSABRES in Fairs" stand at the European Researchers' Night in Lecce. Thank you for your curiosity and your questions!

🎮 Some of you came to play our Serious Game, which puts you in front of the trade-offs between human activities, marine ecosystems and our own well-being. Others simply stopped in front of our screen, caught by the images of "Tides of Balance", the documentary directed by Fabrizio Lecce, and stayed to ask about the project.

📮 The postcards got a lot of attention too. We made three, one for each Marine SABRES Demonstration Area featured in the film: the Arctic Northeast Atlantic, the Tuscan Archipelago and Macaronesia.

🔬The analysis of wetlands restoration interventions carried out in by researchers aimed to understand the role of hydrological dynamics in shaping GHG emissions across different wetlands types: the result underlined that wetland restoration cannot rely on uniform approaches, but must be tailored to site-specific ecohydrological conditions.

🗺Site-tailored wetland restoration actions, supported by science-based monitoring, have the potential to deliver actual climate mitigation!
