Sensors in the dunes smartly positioned to specifically combat cruising?
It makes sense to monitor visitor behavior before and after the introduction of targeted alerts. Thus, we assume that the sensors are already collecting data. Exciting or spooky?

Sensors in the dunes to track your WiFi and Bluetooth signals
By the end of March 2026, poles with solar panels appeared in the Maspalomas Dunes. They seem to be part of the new smart vigilance project the Environmental Dept. informed about via La Provincia in late December 2025. The goal is to increase compliance with regulations "...with sensors, visitor-counting cameras, and state-of-the-art acoustic systems, which will enable the broadcast of targeted messages in real time to guide visitors along the correct trails and discourage movement through sensitive areas".

The yellow blossoms of dame of Maspalomas, Schizogyne glaberrima, are a natural beauty! While growing naturally in the Maspalomas Dunes, it has tough times in the little botanical garden at the Hotel RIU viewpoint once in a while...

Waste separation at the beach kiosks is a farce.
Separate garbage bins for glass (green), plastic & metal (yellow), paper (blue), and organic (brown) are part of beach kiosk features. Kiosk managers along Playa de Maspalomas ( #5-8) and Playa del Inglés ( #4-2) told us that the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana is not picking up the sorted garbage but makes them to dump all four categories in the large sand-colored containers for unsorted garbage.
It is not just ‘para nada’ (for nothing) – it is fooling the good-willing visitors!

On Jueves Santo, Maundy Thursday, around supper time, Guardia Civil on motorcycles patrolled the dunes south of the Hotel RIU viewpoint waving people out.
The many signs at the mirador are clear. Wouldn’t it be fair to spend as much effort to guide people to the area of free transit just 300 m to the east - and clearly mark it on the Paseo Costa Canaria as well as on the beach side?
