Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre

Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Founded in 2008, our non-profit rescue centre saves neglected, abused and abandoned equines in Spain. We also welcome volunteers to work in the shops.

The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre was founded in 2008 by Sue and Rod Weeding. We are British expats who had moved to Spain from England in 2001 to enjoy an easy sunshine-and-relaxation retirement. But all that changed in 2008 with Luceiro, a two-year-old stallion we found locked in a filthy and dark stable, his left eye badly injured and rotting, hurling himself repeatedly against the bars of his

stall as flies drove him crazy. Unable to walk away from such a distressing case of animal cruelty, we brought Luceiro home to our own finca – and unwittingly created a much-needed horse rescue centre. We set up our Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre near the little town of Rojales in the province of Alicante, along Spain’s Costa Blanca coastline. We now care for more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys saved from abuse and neglect. We believe that when you love an animal, you fight to save it. They may be old crocks and broken down and disabled or whatever, but for the abuse they’ve suffered and survived, they deserve a second chance. We are determined to help push for the better treatment of animals in Spain and constantly lobby authorities to change laws and punish those who abuse animals. Learn about our many donation options, including one-off donations and horse sponsorships, here: www.easyhorsecare.net/donate

We also run a network of charity shops across the Alicante province. Donations of furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to stock the shops are gratefully welcomed. Find out more here: http://easyhorsecare.net/shops/charity-shops

Every single cent donated or spent in our charity shops goes towards the hefty feeding and care costs of all our animals. Thank you for helping us gift these equines a second chance at life.

🚨 A Message From Our Charity Shops 🚨

We have a situation.

The shelves are full.

The rails are full.

The cupboards are full.

Our wonderful supporters continue to donate amazing items, which is fantastic news for the rescue centre… but it has left our charity shops facing a serious problem.

They need more customers! 😊

So we are issuing a completely unofficial, highly scientific and possibly slightly desperate appeal for assistance.

If you enjoy a bargain, treasure hunting, browsing, discovering something you never knew you needed or simply helping rescued animals, now is the perfect time to visit one of our three charity shops.

You might find:

🛍️ Clothes

📚 Books

🏠 Household items

🎁 Gifts

🎵 CDs and DVDs

🧸 Toys and games

✨ Bric-a-brac

…and quite possibly that one thing you’ve been looking for for years without realising it.

Every purchase helps support the rescue centre and the many horses, donkeys and other animals who call it home.

Best of all, every item you take home creates valuable breathing space for our heroic shop volunteers, who are currently engaged in an ongoing battle against an endless tide of donations.

Think of it as shopping with a purpose.

Or, if you prefer, a rescue mission.

The animals will thank you.

The volunteers will thank you.

The shelves will definitely thank you. 😄💛

Many of our long-time supporters will remember Frankie and the extraordinary journey that brought him to Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre.

When Frankie arrived, one of his hooves had become so severely twisted that it was almost turned around on itself. It was a shocking sight and seemed almost impossible to imagine that he would ever enjoy a normal life again.

What followed was an incredible period of reconstruction, patience and specialist care. Through the dedication of veterinarians, farriers and the rescue centre team, Frankie was given a second chance.

And what a second chance it has been.
Over the years he has enjoyed friendships, sunshine, comfort and all the simple pleasures that every donkey deserves.

Today Frankie is an elderly gentleman and, like many older residents, he needs a little extra help to keep him comfortable. He receives regular injections into his leg which help him remain active and enjoy a good quality of life.

The treatment works remarkably well, although there is one tell-tale sign that everybody at the centre recognises. As the time approaches for his next injection, Frankie begins to slow down and it becomes obvious that he is due a little extra assistance.

It is one of the realities of caring for elderly rescued animals. Rescue is not simply about saving a life in a moment of crisis. It is about standing beside that animal for years afterwards, adapting to changing needs and helping them grow old with dignity and comfort.

Looking at Frankie today, it is hard to believe the condition he arrived in all those years ago.
His story remains one of the rescue centre's most remarkable transformations and a wonderful reminder of what can happen when animals are given time, expert care and a chance to heal. 💛🫏

Not every rescue centre project involves horses and donkeys. Sometimes it involves heavy machinery, a forklift truck and a very large piece of history.

Today's video shows Rod moving the next section of the old well pump machinery that was discovered deep underground on the rescue centre property.

After decades hidden beneath the ground, the equipment is gradually being recovered, cleaned, preserved and given a new home where visitors can appreciate a small part of the site's history.
The challenge, of course, is that these pieces were built in an era when machinery was designed to last forever and apparently weighed almost as much.

As Rod manoeuvres the latest section into Ruppert's area, he and Susan discuss the object's impressive weight. The verdict seems to be that it is probably heavier than a pony, but perhaps not quite as heavy as Ruppert himself. That's a very specialised unit of measurement, but it works for us. 🐷

Meanwhile, Linda stands by ready to assist. Whether she is supervising the operation or preparing to catch the machinery should anything go wrong remains unclear, although we suspect she may have overestimated her lifting capacity slightly.

We often talk about the animals at the rescue centre, but preserving the history of the property is important too. Thanks to Rod's hard work, these remarkable pieces of machinery are being given a second life rather than being lost forever.

Rather like many of the animals here, and anything that stands still long enough, they have been rescued too. 💛🔧🐴

Many of our supporters will recognise Alice, the beautiful white horse with the deep scars on her face who shares her field with her devoted companion Diplomat.

Like many of the animals at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, Alice is now entering her senior years and requires a little extra support to help her stay comfortable and healthy.

Recently, Susan noticed that Alice had lost some weight. While this can happen as horses grow older, it is something we monitor very carefully. Alice also suffers from thrombosis in her back legs, meaning that good nutrition and careful management are especially important.

To help her maintain her condition, Alice is now coming out of her field during the day to enjoy some extra Alfa alongside a bucket feed containing her medication and additional nutrition.

Diplomat, naturally, thinks any food being provided should also be available to him, but for the moment Alice is receiving some extra special attention of her own. 😊

One of the realities of running a rescue centre is that many of our animals are not only rescued but elderly. Their needs change over time, and feeding programmes often have to be adjusted to ensure they continue enjoying the best possible quality of life.

The good news is that Alice remains bright, interested in everything around her and very much herself.

Growing old is a privilege denied to many neglected animals. Thanks to the care she receives here, Alice has that opportunity, and we will continue doing everything we can to help her enjoy her golden years alongside her faithful friend Diplomat. 💛🐴

As summer begins to tighten its grip on Spain once again, preparations are underway for one of the rescue centre’s most enthusiastic users of cooling facilities… Ruppert. 🐷☀️💦

Today’s video shows the creation of Ruppert’s summer water park, a feature he looks forward to every year when temperatures begin to climb.

There was, however, one small logistical complication.

The water was added before the shade sail was suspended.

The result was a brief moment of realisation that perhaps the order of operations could have been improved. Fortunately, the Spanish sun is a remarkably efficient drying machine and the problem will soon solve itself.

Meanwhile, John can be seen scrambling around railings and making the necessary adjustments, while Ruppert adopts the managerial approach of standing nearby and haughtily supervising events without offering any practical assistance whatsoever. Some animals are workers. Some are project managers.

With temperatures now returning to more normal summer levels after an unusually wet and unsettled winter and spring, heat awareness becomes increasingly important for both animals and volunteers. Providing shade, fresh water and cool areas where animals can escape the midday sun becomes a daily priority across the rescue centre.

Ruppert, naturally, takes these matters very seriously indeed.

Or at least he will once his water park is fully operational. 🐷😎💦

Necessity is often described as the mother of invention, and nowhere is that more true than at a rescue centre. 💡💛

Today’s video takes us into Rod’s workshop, otherwise known as the great outdoors, where he is working on a new feeding system for the animals.

The idea actually came from our vet, Dorothea. Faced with the eye-watering cost of commercially available feeding machines, she decided to build her own. Rod was so impressed when he saw it that he came back determined to create one for the rescue centre as well.

Like many aspects of life at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, this project is about finding practical solutions to real problems. With so many elderly animals, special diets, medications and feeding routines, equipment that can make life easier for both animals and carers is incredibly valuable.

Of course, buying ready-made systems is often beyond the reach of a charity that must carefully account for every euro spent. That is why people like Dorothea and Rod are so important. They look at a challenge, scratch their heads for a while, disappear into a workshop, and somehow emerge with a solution.

The rescue centre is often associated with horses and donkeys, but behind the scenes there is a huge amount of problem-solving, engineering, maintenance and innovation taking place every day.

We’ll bring you further updates as the project develops, but for now here is Rod explaining what he is building and why.

Sometimes animal welfare starts not in a stable, but with an idea, a few tools and a determination to make every euro go as far as possible. 🔧🐴

There are moments at a rescue centre that feel like a deep breath after weeks of holding one.

Today, Charlie Brown reminded us of that.

After all the worry, the hospital visits, scans, blood tests, shaved patches and anxious waiting for results, we captured a wonderful little video of him charging around the donkey field with his friends as though he owns the place — which, in Charlie Brown’s mind, he probably does.

It is amazing how quickly the spirit of a young donkey can return once he starts feeling better. One moment they look fragile and subdued, and the next they are tearing around the field at full speed with ears flying, apparently fuelled by sunshine, mischief and pure stubbornness.

Charlie Brown still has some way to go and will continue to be monitored closely, but seeing him running, interacting and enjoying life again has lifted spirits enormously at the centre.

Animals live so completely in the present moment. They do not sit pondering blood results or veterinary invoices. They simply feel better… and then immediately decide it is time to sprint at unnecessary speed with their friends. There is probably wisdom in that.

🛍️ WEDNESDAY IS CHARITY SHOP DAY! 💛

Many people know Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre through the horses and donkeys, but behind the scenes our three charity shops are one of the absolute foundations upon which the rescue centre stands.

Every rug, every bag of feed, every veterinary call-out, every medication and every carefully prepared special diet for elderly or sick animals is helped enormously by the income raised through our shops.

Across Alicante province we now have three wonderful shops:
📍 La Zenia
📍 Ciudad Quesada
📍 La Siesta

Each has its own character, its own regular visitors and, most importantly, its own incredible team of volunteers who quietly work away sorting, cleaning, pricing, organising and welcoming customers day after day.

Our shops are full of unexpected treasures:
✨ Clothes
✨ Books
✨ Household items
✨ Furniture
✨ Bric-a-brac
✨ Games, CDs and DVDs
✨ Ornaments and gifts
✨ Electrical items and much more

They are places where one person’s unwanted item becomes another person’s bargain — and where every euro raised goes directly towards helping rescued animals.

The shops are also an important part of the wider community. Friendships are formed there, stories are shared, cups of tea mysteriously appear, and occasionally somebody walks in for “just a quick look” before emerging triumphantly twenty minutes later carrying three books, a lamp, two handbags and something decorative that nobody can quite identify but which was apparently absolutely essential. Such are the strange gravitational laws of charity shops. 😄

We are always hugely grateful for donations of good quality items and, of course, for the volunteers who give their time so generously to keep the shops running.

Most importantly of all, every purchase — no matter how small — helps us continue caring for over a hundred rescued horses and donkeys, many of whom require lifelong specialist care.

So today we celebrate the shops, the volunteers, the donors and the customers who help keep the rescue centre moving forward every single day. 💛

Just a reminder that tomorrow there will be a lovely charity Coffee & Drinks Day in aid of Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre at La Hacienda, Lo Crispin. ☕💛

📍 La Hacienda, Lo Crispin
📅 Wednesday 27th May
🕐 From 13:00

There will be:
✨ Raffle prizes
✨ Cakes
✨ Clothing and household goods for sale
✨ Drinks, coffee and plenty of friendly faces

Events like these are enormously important for the rescue centre. Behind every bale of hay, every veterinary visit and every carefully prepared feed for an elderly or sick animal stands a community of people quietly helping in whatever way they can.

Recent weeks alone have brought huge veterinary expenses and ongoing care costs, so every event, every raffle ticket, every coffee and every kind donation genuinely makes a difference.

A huge thank you to everybody involved in organising the day and supporting the animals. We hope it will be a wonderful afternoon. 💛
