ROSIE JOHNSON:
As a first-year Fine Art student, taking part in a residency so early in my degree was an incredible opportunity. I travelled alone to Catalonia, Spain for a four‑week creative residency with Riba Rocks, joining two fellow artists. From the moment I arrived, our hosts were welcoming, and the stunning landscape made it clear I was in for an inspiring stay.
As someone fascinated by nature, the rugged and rural olive farm setting was a key part of the experience, offering a completely contrasting landscape to immerse myself in. The residency’s focus on sustainability meant living off‑grid, being mindful of water and electricity usage, and considering how our creative waste can directly affect the land. We explored local villages, nature reserves, historic sites and traditional celebrations, meaning we learnt about Catalan culture and gathered research material that now feeds into my practice. Sharing a studio space encouraged collaboration and strengthened relationships with both my fellow students and our hosts. A standout moment, for me, was the morning spent volunteering with the local nature reserve. Offering our time and doing practical work, left us all feeling like we had done something proactive and important, it helped the local community and wildlife. Just this small amount of time and effort together, left us with boosted moods and inspired to do more. Overall, the residency was just brilliant – a thoroughly engaging and inspiring experience that brought us closer together and created lasting memories. I cannot wait to begin second-year and return to this landscape through my sketchbooks and photographs. skylark

WALLIS WRIGHT:
My time at Riba Rocks was transformative and I am excited to continue working in the studio back home with the material I collected out in Riba . Immersing myself in such a different landscape with its difference in light, terrain and planting was great inspiration for my painting. Living abroad out of my comfort zone propelled me into independence and having such welcoming and nurturing hosts made all the difference. It is an experience I will cherish forever.

LARA WELLS:
Riba Rocks was an incredible experience. Being able to live in a new environment surrounded by so much nature provided ample inspiration. I loved the focus on sustainability and plan to bring it into my practice by reducing my plastic waste and experimenting more with ephemeral art. Exploring a new area and culture was so exciting and this residency has given me the confidence to explore the world even more.e.wells
