g, it’s ignorance isn’t bliss, it’s the problem. Regenerating lives,’ the Regeneration Project Granada is a forward-thinking collaborative attempting a new approach to refugeeism, with their vision of repopulating a relatively uninhabited village in the Spanish province of Granada using permaculture models.
“This project aims to build a mutual relationship and trust between refugees and rural communities through the regeneration of degraded landscapes,” explains one of the team’s core members, Gilbert Jassey, a Gambian refugee who is seeking asylum in Spain after being persecuted by his government for environmental activism. “By using permaculture models to regenerate and redesign degraded landscapes we hope to bring diversity, livelihoods and abundance.”
The rural village Regeneration Project Granada has set its sights on, has virtually become a ghost town due to depopulation caused by high unemployment and deterioration of the land. It is hoped that together migrants, refugees, local people and anyone interested in participating, can work the soil to create sustainable livelihoods, all the time regenerating the ecosystem and economy of the area.
“The most rewarding parts for me in being involved in this project are bringing hope to a changing climate by using the best sustainable practices for regeneration,” Gilbert says, “and working with refugees to give back to and exchange with their new communities through win-win solutions by working with nature.”
As one of five groups to win the Lush Spring Prize Intentional Projects Award, Regeneration Project Granada receives £10,000 to help bring their idea to fruition. “Winning the Lush Spring Prize has meant a lot for me and my team,” Gilbert tells us. “It means that the hard work, love, and dedication we are giving to this project has been recognised. I’m committed to using the opportunity to improve the community and the land. I believe the result will benefit many generations to come.”

We’re hosting an online event on 18 June (10:00–12:00 CEST) and you’re invited!

🎬✨ Community Building and Arts Advocacy in Migrant Women’s Labour Rights in Europe
Join us to explore how three grassroots organisations across Europe are using art, food, and collective creativity to advocate for migrant women’s labour rights.

We’ll be sharing key learnings and results from our international collaboration between:

🇪🇸 La Bolina (Spain) – working with migrant women in the “plastic sea” of Almería through storytelling, food, film, and performance.
🇵🇱 Theatre Pedagogues (Poland) – collaborating with a union of Ukrainian care workers using dance and voice work to build confidence and empower community.
🇬🇷 Lesvos Solidarity (Greece) – supporting newly arrived people on the island through arts, food, housing, and employment initiatives.

Expect a vibrant presentation of our creative methods — from manifestos to films, from theatre to collective meals — and an open space for dialogue.

🗓️ Date: 18 June
🕙 Time: 10:00–12:00 CEST

The Art of moving forward. Our Visit To Lesvos.
My and the Family are in Lesvos meeting the work of Lesvos SolidarityLesvos Solidarity, La Bolina´s partner together with Stowarzyszenie Pedagogów TeatruTheatre Pedagog in Poland on a project we called the Art of Moving Forward. We are collaborating together to better understand and visibilise the working conditions and appalling exploitative situations that people that have migrated suffer in our countries. Too often people fleeing from war or violent oppressions and always to meet their human need and right for a better, different life.
We advocate for structural reform on migrant (labour) rights.

TP (https://pedagodzyteatru.org/en/about-us/) is in allyship with Ukrainian women working in the care sector in Poland and together have been raising their voices to change policy for the government to be co-responsable and guardian of proper employment contracts.

La Bolina, (https://www.labolina.org/) we have been learning and supporting our friends from Morocco and Sub Saharan Africa on the challenges they face working in the agricultural sector in Spain. Some people waiting for a chance to regularise their situation in the country, suffer worse conditions and scams. Majority, struggle with a sector in which exploitation has become the norm.

Le**os Solidarity is an organization born out of the local response to the needs of people arriving in the Island back from 2014. Their systemic approach aims to meet the day to day needs of people such as food and shelter particularly for women and children, legal advice, learning without losing the main goal to change the system, advocating for Safe Passage. Moreover the organization embodies their values of equity and solidarity and participation with their incredibly diverse team and their policies on egalitarian salaries and structures of Care.
In this picture our visit to their atelier where they transform the life jackets and the remains of the boats that once flooded the island, into beautiful backpacks, wallets, cases, key rings. https://lesol.gr/
Meeting their work is an incredible learning experience for La Bolina and a humbling transformative one as a person.

These collaborations facilitated by Erasmus Plus are rich and necessary.

Ernest Gibba y Bala Encontrada presentamos La Bolina .

Sustaining the work of developing community.

I got reminded by my computer, about some of the instances that show a bit of the work I have been doing the last years. As I put these three images together, despite their differences, a pattern clearly emerges.

The first is a picture showing a meeting at the warehouse we inhabit for 3 months in Paris during the COP21 in 2015. We turn this wood factory into a residency for more than 150 artists and activists. In the board at the back you can read, Meditation at 8am, breakfast and check-in, which we did every morning.

This project housed many many activists and enabled hundreds of activities. We instigated that through creating the basics of care for community-building and a complex, nearly chaotic and highly efficient and distributed network of relationships that supported and inspired all kinds of actions.

The second picture shows a Community Winter Solstice Dinner we served in Restabal Granada in 2019. Through these kinds of communal activities, La Bolina´s aim is to create a multicultural space that welcomes and celebrates all kinds of people in the rural areas of Spain. Our vision included creating livelihoods around agroecological business, a learning centre to share Permaculture, Agroecology to locals and foreigners, and issues such as power, privilege, collaboration in diverse groups. As well as the cultural celebratory activities that constitute the building blocks of care and trust necessary to any project.

The last collage of pictures are from a community laboratory we run in Italy in November 2024, around the use of theatre, and embodied practices in migrant solidarity work.

We explored together how the body is a vehicle for healing oneself and community, the power of theatre and other forms of expression to deal with complex and traumatic issues. And most importantly through living together, cooking for one another, caring for a communal house, noticing each other we explore and learn the power of care and trust. If we locate these two elements (Trust and Care) at the centre of the mainstream migrant System will create the necessary changes that system desperately needs.

These pictures remind me that in times of urgent and most needed change, we must not forget the crucial importance of the invisible and subtle ground that care offers to our work.
