Know more about Open2preserve
OPEN2PRESERVE is defined as a project to implement a value of traditional practices (pastoral fires and directed grazing), aimed at protecting the environment and promoting the effectiveness of resources, whose main objective is to promote and strengthen biodiversity, the protection of nature and ecological infrastructure thanks to the transnational cooperation between Portugal, France and Spain (Interreg SUDOE Program).
Fire and herbivorism play a decisive role in the creation of the landscape and the richness of the systems, originating open spaces of great diversity of species and plant communities. Despite its importance, open mountain areas have declined throughout the southern region of Europe. A good part of these spaces are abandoned due to rural successes, changes in the production system and fire suppression policies in some regions. The direct consequence is a shrubbery and homogenization of the landscape that leads to an increased risk of fires in the SUDOE territory.
