Sanisera Archaeology Institute

Sanisera Archaeology Institute The Field School offers over 20 international courses throughout Europe focusing on archaeology, anthropology, GIS and underwater archaeology.

The Sanisera Field School started in 1996 as a school for university students who wanted to be trained in archaeological fieldwork through the excavation of the Roman portuary city of Sanisera (Menorca, Balearic Islands, Spain). In 2004, due to the continuing success of its archaeological courses, the Field School became an international reference center and started giving its courses in English for students coming from, in most of the cases, Anglo-Saxon Universities, with programs in Archaeology and Anthropology, such as those from USA, Canada, Australia and United Kingdom. Our commitment is to promote Archaeology in its different aspects of research, training, and conservation, with a basic and clear purpose: to involve anyone from around the world who wishes to gain access to this scientific field. Sanisera is an international archaeological organization whose main aim is that of promoting and developing research , so that our current and future generations can be enriched by culture and education in this field. We achieve our goals with the participation and collaboration of a group of volunteers who are coordinated by specialists and professionals with proven expertise in fieldwork, both surveying and excavating, as well as studying the archaeological artifacts found on site in the laboratory. Nowadays our work can be found in several European countries: Spain, Italy, Greece and Bosnia. Our field school programs, which are led by leading academics, keeps on growing. We are currently offering more than 20 courses which allow students to choose from a wide range of places, topics and archaeological methods, ranging from theory to practice. Participants will gain hands-on experience in archaeological practice. We work with respect to protect the welfare of people and Archeology, including our personnel, researchers, volunteers and the sites where we develop our projects.

This tomb was studied during the 2022 and 2023 sessions. The excavation and bioarchaeological study has been developed by Alicia Alonso with the advice of the project director Fernando Contreras. We thank all the fieldschool participants who have been the archaeologists who, through their practices, have been able to document this unique Sanisera tomb.

The tomb was intended for the multiple burial of four adults. One of the skeletons was over 30 years old and the rest were a little younger in a range between 20 and 30 years old.

This tomb stands out from the rest of the Sanisera necropolis (Menorca - Spain) because a beautiful Roman glass vase was discovered inside and was part of the funerary ritual of one of the deceased. In addition, at the feet of the same co**se, a small ceramic jug was found that is probably of Palestinian origin and was made at the end of the 6th century AD. or during the 7th century AD.

The dating of the burials is pending the results of Carbon 14, which are currently being analyzed, but they will probably indicate that we can place the funerary activity of this tomb between the middle of the 6th century AD and the end of the 7th century AD.

Our Sanisera bioarchaeology course program remains open for the 2024 campaign both in Menorca and in the South of Spain with its courses 08, 18, 51 and 53. If you are interested in participating, consult the website of our organization Sanisera Archaeology Institute . We guarantee you a unique experience to train you and enjoy your time.

How beautiful and romantic is the archaeology...right?

After more than 25 years excavating, I can say that there are unforgettable days and others that are many, in which you have to be very patient to understand the excavation we do.

We present a collection of the pieces that we have discovered throughout 2023 and that have been impressive artifacts that we can date between the 6th and 7th centuries AD.

The adventure and archaeological surprises will return soon in the 2024 session. Thank goodness there is little time left, how many days and hours to start again.

In the 2024 sessions we will continue to excavate this place to obtain more information. If you want to participate, follow our website www.archaeology.institute and sign up.

During the month of September 2023, during the excavation phase of the new early christian basilica, a fragment of Roman glass from the 6th - 7th centuries AD was discovered for the first time in Sanisera.

The piece corresponds to a small flat-based plate that must have been used during funeral or prayer rites in memory of the deceased. It was probably used to serve some type of food among those attending the cult.

Without a doubt, the most incredible and exciting thing was discovering that the plate bore a Latin cross inspired by Byzantine models of that time. It was incredible and spectacular for all of us who were present in that unique and unforgettable moment of the 2023 fieldschool. It will remain in our memory forever.

In the 2024 sessions we will continue to excavate this place to obtain more information. If you want to participate, follow our website http://archaeology.institute/sanisera-archaeology-institute-courses.asp and sign up for course.

The excavation in the Roman port of Sanisera began with a great discovery and archaeological advance during the month of May’23.
A semicircular wall was discovered that corresponds to an apse. For many years the remains of this building could not be interpreted as a basilica. The apse is the most obvious evidence that serves the archaeologist to determine that we can interpret how in Sanisera there are already several cult buildings of the first Christians. It’s possibly a construction from the 6th century AD and from the pavements found in the altar area we know that this space was renovated in several periods.
We thank all the participants of our fieldschool who made this new historic find a reality.
In the 2024 sessions we will continue to excavate this place to obtain more information. If you want to participate, follow our website www.archaeology.institute and sign up for course 6.

We expose our latest archaeological project to revalue the maritime heritage of the early Christian basilica of Son Bou located on the Mediterranean island of Menorca (Spain). It's a five year project. We anticipate the result of the work carried out during the first year through the portfolio that we have published of the project so that it disseminates the developed aspects of archaeological excavation, 3d model, conservation, protection, study of artifacts and dissemination program. We thank all those who have contributed. In the month of November 2023 we are going to resume the excavation through a new fieldschool of our organization that you can already consult on our website.

During the month of June, one of our field school modalities was used on the Mediterranean coast of San Javier, (Murcia, Spain) focused on learning the software that every archaeologist should use in their excavation and laboratory work. It is essential to practice AutoCAD, ArcGIS and Photoshop by carrying out exercises that are common in our archaeological projects. In addition, drawing techniques were learned to prepare the plans of the excavated remains and the technical drawing of ceramics because it is the abundant material that is discovered. This activity was demonstrated thanks to a collaboration with the archaeologist Carmen Martinez, Manager of CMM Arqueologia, who has taught the course. After the success of the course and the excellent opinion of the students that they have obtained, we will repeat it again in 2023.
