Dear supporters and community.

We have never experienced so many religions, nationalities, and people of all possible sexual orientations living together in mutual respect in one place.

One example is that one of the largest mosques is located at the Yumbo Centre, which is the main hub for the LGBT+ community.

Iran and Egypt, two countries where being Gay is a criminal offence, are playing each other in the FIFA World Cup on Friday. The match has been designated a Pride Match, and both nations have objected.

Egypt’s Football Association wrote to FIFA asking for any LGBTQ+ affiliation to be blocked, citing the country’s “religious and social values.” Iran called for only official national flags to be allowed inside the stadium, a move that would ban rainbow Pride flags.

FIFA has not publicly responded. Seattle has.

Hedda McLendon, Seattle’s World Cup senior vice president, confirmed the Pride Match is going ahead.

“We anticipate a lot of rainbow flags in the stadium and T-shirts with rainbow flags on them. Let’s welcome people to Seattle. It’s the World Cup. And let’s show them how we Pride. It’s not a day, it’s not a weekend here. It’s a month.”

Across the 11 countries hosting the FIFA World Cup, homosexuality is criminalised in some of the competing nations. In several countries, same-sex relationships can carry the death penalty.

On Friday, Iran and Egypt will take to the pitch in a stadium expected to be filled with rainbow flags.
