British Benevolent Fund Spain To grant timely financial assistance to British nationals and dependents living or travelling in Spain who are facing extreme financial hardship.

The British Benevolent Fund, Spain (BBF) is one of the oldest English-speaking charities in Spain, with records dating back to at least 1919. The charity operates with the support of its Honorary President, HM Ambassador to Spain and is overseen by an independent Chairman and Committee. All committee members have extensive knowledge of Spain and a strong understanding of the challenges faced by Br

itish citizens living in or visiting the country. They generously give their time, experience, and expertise on a voluntary basis, receiving no remuneration. We also have a team of voluntary case workers who help and assist in assessing grant applications along with a team of fundraisers. Working closely with the British Consulates across Spain and other charitable organisations, the BBF provides financial assistance and practical support to British nationals experiencing severe hardship. Support is available to both residents and visitors, with each case assessed individually by the committee. Over the years, the BBF has assisted individuals affected by conditions such as Alzheimer’s, mental health challenges, cancer, learning disabilities, strokes, and heart attacks. It has also supported many people facing isolation and hardship due to unforeseen circumstances and helps and assists with repatriation costs to the UK if the need arises. Would you just take a look at these fantastic words from a recent email from a beneficiary we recently helped.

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to you personally, to everyone at the British Benevolent Fund, and to the British Consulate for the exceptional support, kindness and guidance you have shown me throughout this very difficult time. The assistance I have received has made a profound difference, and I am truly and sincerely appreciative of the time, care and humanity that has been extended to me, especially at my lowest point when I needed it most.

Returning to the UK is a significant step, and whilst it inevitably comes with mixed emotions, I am hopeful and fully committed to the opportunity to rebuild my circumstances and re-establish my support network in order to be able to be present in person as a litigant in person in the High Court and to fight for my son.

Knowing that organisations such as yours and the Consulate have been willing to step in with such compassion at a critical moment has been profoundly reassuring, and something I will carry with me with lasting gratitude. With the steadfast support a few close friends I have maintained since growing up, I am confident I will be able to rebuild and move forward positively back home.

I remain deeply and sincerely grateful for the support I have received from the British Benevolent Fund. The assistance provided has been invaluable during one of the most difficult periods of my life, and I will never forget the kindness, dignity, and generosity with which I have been treated. It is my sincere intention that, once I am back on my feet and in a position to do so, I will seek to reimburse the Fund for the support provided, so that these resources may continue to assist others facing similarly challenging circumstances.

Please do pass on my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in my case. Their professionalism, empathy, and quiet commitment have left a lasting impression on me, and I will always remain profoundly grateful for the support I have received.

✈Case Study: Assisting a Vulnerable British National Stranded in Barcelona

Late one evening, the BBF received an urgent enquiry concerning a vulnerable British national who had become stranded at Barcelona Airport after his belongings were stolen. While he still had possession of his passport, he reported having no access to funds and no support network available to assist him.

With valuable support from our volunteers, who closely monitored the frequent email correspondence, the team worked quickly to assess the situation.

As further information emerged, it became increasingly clear that the individual was highly vulnerable and in need of immediate assistance. Following discussions within the team, a decision was made to do everything possible to facilitate his return to the UK that same evening.

Several challenges arose throughout the day, creating uncertainty about whether the individual would be able to make the scheduled flight. The team remained in close contact, responding rapidly to developments and working collaboratively to overcome the obstacles as they emerged.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the BBF team, the individual successfully boarded his flight and returned safely to the UK. The swift assessment, effective communication, and teamwork demonstrated throughout the case ensured a positive outcome for a vulnerable person in crisis.

This case highlights the importance of rapid intervention, effective teamwork, and flexible problem-solving when supporting vulnerable British nationals overseas. By working together and maintaining close communication, the team was able to provide timely assistance and help a vulnerable individual return home safely.
