📣 TransplantChild has published the Clinical Decision Support Tool entitled “Management of BK virus in Kidney Transplantation”, addressing a key infectious complication in paediatric kidney transplantation (KT).

BK virus infection remains one of the most important infectious complications after paediatric kidney transplantation. Early detection and appropriate management are essential to prevent BK virus–associated nephropathy and graft loss.

Our new document summarises current evidence and recommendations on screening strategies, diagnostic approaches, risk factors, immunosuppression management and treatment recommendations in kidney transplant recipients.

✅ This CDST adapts existing consensus recommendations to the paediatric setting, providing practical guidance for the prevention, monitoring and management of BK virus infection in children.

✅ The CDST is adapted from an international consensus developed by the International Working Group (IWG). Evidence was assessed using the GRADE methodology, and where data were limited, expert opinion was incorporated to support clinical decision-making.

📣 We are very pleased to invite you to our next accredited webinar “Cardiovascular disease after paediatric SOT” presented by Prof. Anette Melk - MD, PhD, Pediatrics and Transplantation Medicine, Consultant Pediatric Nephrologist at Hannover Medical School in Hannover (Germany).

SAVE THE DATE!
🗓️ Tuesday 16th June 2026 at 16:00 CET

📌 This webinar will focus on cardiovascular monitoring and prevention in children after solid organ transplantation.
It will explore subclinical cardiovascular changes - such as arterial stiffness and cardiac remodeling - in pediatric kidney, liver and lung transplant recipients.
The session will also highlight the role of early detection, risk factors and the protective impact of physical activity as part of long-term care strategies.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

✅ Identifying key cardiovascular risk patterns after pediatric kidney, liver and lung transplantation.
✅ Understanding the limitations of office BP in pediatric transplant monitoring.
✅ Recognising s*x- and graft-specific risk factors.
✅ Apprehending the concepts of preventive care, e.g. lifestyle modifications.

In order to earn European CME credits (ECMEC®s):

1. Register at the following link: https://qrto.org/CpG6fb
2. Attend the webinar through this link: https://qrto.org/rmAHWO

People don't talk enough about their attitudes toward organ donation in their private lives.
The most significant reason for the lack of a decision for or against organ donation during one's lifetime is still the poor level of information available.

💫 The information tour "Camping for Organ Donation" organised by the Network of Transplant Coordinators of Northern Germany - a campaign established in the past years - has proved to be a successful initiative to provide visibility in Germany to the topic of organ donation and to facilitate discussion about its medical, ethical and social aspects within families and circles of friends, connecting experts with the public.

Transplant-Kids e.V., the German Patient Association dedicated to transplanted kids and their families, will be present in three locations of the info-tour:

📍 June 1st – Oldenburg Hospital, from 10.30 to 16.00
📍 June 5th – Leer Emergency Department, from 10.00 to 13.30
📍 June 6th – Hannover Medical School Children's Hospital, from 11.00 to 12.30

🎤 “We want to collaborate to increase public awareness and willingness in Germany to donate organs representing the paediatric population.” – states Michaela Dirks, member of the Board of the Patient Association. “Our will is to advocate for the interests of pediatric patients, highlighting how many children are already affected by organ failure and informing that organ transplantation can, ideally, enable them to lead an almost normal life”.

🤝 Transplant-Kids is currently working on coordinating the event of the 4th of June, at Klinikum Wilhelmshaven; if you want to give your contribution you are very welcome, get in touch!

📣 We are pleased to announce the publication of the new Clinical Decision Support Tool (CDST) developed by our European Reference Network: “European Roadmap for Organ Donation and Transplantation: a Multi-stakeholder Call to Action”.

The document is based on the “Joint Statement” of 2019 produced by the “Thematic Network on Organ Donation and Transplantation” which outlined strategies to promote solid organ transplantation across Europe, increasing donation and transplantation rates and improving transplantation outcomes at multiple level - healthcare providers, national healthcare systems and the broader European Union.

Our Network worked on adapting this work specifically to the paediatric population and on updating it with data reported evidence until 2024.

🧩 Moreover, our CDST specifically highlights the key role that the ERN TransplantChild plays in this context, fostering collaboration among its pediatric transplant centers across Europe, and of its Paediatric European Transplant Registry – PETER, which consents the collection and analysis of paediatric-specific transplant data, thus further strengthening benchmarking activities and supporting the development of evidence-based best practices tailored to the paediatric population.
