Carers Worldwide

Carers Worldwide Family carers have little recognition & support in low-& middle-income countries. We're changing that

Around the world, the daily needs of ill and disabled adults and children are provided by their unpaid carers. These unpaid carers are usually a family member, often the mother or daughter, or maybe a friend. Carers Worldwide draws attention to the needs of unpaid family carers in low- and middle-income countries, promoting their recognition and drawing attention to their needs. We train and suppo

rt our local charity partners to include unpaid carers into their existing programmes and to initiate activities to meet the needs of carers at all levels – emotional, physical and economic. Our Mission is to achieve recognition of the role of unpaid family carers and to transform their lives, as well as those of their families and communities.

Today’s theme focuses on and how to make it carer friendly.

For many , balancing education with caring responsibilities can be incredibly challenging. Yet many remain invisible within education systems, with little to no recognition of the care they provide at home and the impact it can have on their learning.

And where we work in low- and middle-income countries, the challenges can be even greater.

Access to healthcare, respite and other support services is often limited and when a family member needs care, there may be no formal support available to help.

At the same time, parents may need to work to support the household. In the absence of alternative care arrangements, children can find themselves stepping into caring roles for siblings, parents, grandparents or other relatives.

As a result, some young carers miss school regularly, struggle to keep up with their studies or are forced to leave education altogether.

At , we work with whole families to help change this. We support cared-for family members to access the treatment and support they need, so parents are better able to manage without relying on children to provide care. We also help carers find work that works around their caring responsibilities, helping reduce pressure on young carers and supporting them to stay in or return to school 💜🧡

Now we'd love to hear your thoughts 💬

Caring can have a significant impact on a person’s ability to work and earn an income.

For many across low- and middle-income countries, caring responsibilities can make it difficult - and nearly impossible - to access employment and livelihood opportunities, often leading to financial hardship.

This , as the conversation focuses on creating carer-friendly workplaces and supporting employees with caring responsibilities, we’re also highlighting another reality: many carers are unable to work at all because they cannot leave the person they care for.

This is why we believe that supporting carers, especially those outside formal employment is an important part of building .

Today marks the start of 2026 and a week of conversations about how we can build more .

At Carers Worldwide, we know that caring often comes at a cost to own health and well-being. In fact, our research shows that 73% of unpaid family carers report experiencing health issues of their own.

That's why we bring healthcare directly into communities in our project areas across South Asia through our . This enables carers to access support that they may otherwise struggle to find the time or money to seek.

From physical health checks to mental health support, we work in collaboration with our local charity partners to ensure carers can look after themselves too 💜🧡
