ELENA CHRISTIANOU – Jury Member

Elena Christianou (Greece) is Professor of Piano at the Thessaloniki Municipal Conservatory, where she shaped generations of pianists over several decades. Many of her students have graduated with the highest distinctions, reflecting her longstanding commitment to artistic excellence and pedagogical depth.
She graduated with honours from the Thessaloniki State Conservatory under Nora Loukidou, before continuing her advanced studies at the London College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, where she worked with Frank Wibaut and Christopher Elton.
A decisive influence on her artistic development was her close mentorship with the eminent pianist and composer Giorgos Thymis, with whom she maintained a particularly significant musical relationship, performing also a number of his works. This collaboration marked an important chapter in her career. Further inspiration came through masterclasses and encounters with legendary musicians such as Sviatoslav Richter, Vitaly Margulis, and Lev Vlassenko.
As a performer, Elena Christianou has appeared in major international venues including Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall, and St. David’s Hall, and has participated in numerous festivals throughout Europe. She is especially noted for her refined interpretations of the Romantic repertoire and is widely respected as a chamber musician.
Alongside her concert and teaching career, she is frequently invited to serve on juries of international piano competitions. She has been a jury member since its foundation at the Marbella International Piano Competition, among others, contributing her expertise to the evaluation and support of emerging pianists.

Chamber music also plays a central role in his art, as he performed with artists such as Mischa Maisky, Vadim Repin, Jose Cura, or Boris Berezovsky. He is also keen to demonstrate his improvisation skills in various areas beyond the classical stage, such as jazz, world music, or folk music, which is always imbued with classical music's values and the 20th-century tradition of improvisation.
As a graduate of the Budapest-based Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, János Balázs finds it crucial to pass on Liszt's tradition to future musicians. In this sense, he has been invited by the Canadian McGill University, the Shenyang Conservatory of Music, the Hanoi Conservatory of Music, to give masterclasses. He was also appointed associate professor of the Liszt Academy in Budapest.
In 2016, János Balázs founded the György Cziffra Festival, which he dedicated to the conservation and care of the intellectual and musical legacy of his role model, György Cziffra. The festival has risen to one of the most high-ranking classical music festivals in Hungary; with its diversity of genres and the kind participation of international guest artists, it is an unmatched colour on the palette of the Hungarian culture scene.
