Madrid For Refugees (MFR) is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization focused on supporting and empowering refugees, migrants and asylum seekers.

Founded in 2015, Madrid For Refugees (MFR) is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to helping and empowering those in the local community who are: individuals who find themselves in the status of being a refugee, asylum seekers, stateless, and migrants in need of international protection and/or at risk of social exclusion. MFR focuses on improving social integration and employability

. Since MFR started, we have directly supported over 2800 refugees, 440 refugees have completed our training courses and over 230 volunteers have supported our work. Every month we provide training and educational courses to foster integration and employability for over 50 refugees and migrants. We currently offer English for employment, digital literacy and coding courses, as well as employment and job search workshops (all conducted in small personalized groups). We also organize the collection and delivery of donated essential items in collaboration with refugee families, Madrid-based refugee welcome centers, and NGOs. Due to the pandemic, we have lost a great deal of our funding and events revenue. Right now we're at a CRITICAL MOMENT, and we urgently need some more monthly donors to support our work! MFR – Refugees Code Demo Day 2026

This June 18th, during the week of , join us for an inspiring evening celebrating the work of our Refugees Code students — refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants who have been training in Front-End Web Development and Data Analytics this year.

They’ll be presenting their final projects live. The evening also includes a networking reception with refreshments and the chance to connect with the MFR community.

We’re especially looking to connect with:
✅ Companies open to internship or hiring opportunities
✅ Future students interested in joining Refugees Code
✅ Potential volunteers who want to teach or mentor

World Refugee Day is a reminder that safety, dignity, and opportunity belong to everyone. This initiative is one way we put that belief into practice.

We’re thrilled to welcome Irene (she/her) to the Madrid For Refugees team this summer!

Originally from Texas, Irene studies Business and Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. She’s interning with us this from May to June through . She came to Madrid to experience new cultures, dive into the art and music scene, and practice her Spanish.

Her favorite thing so far? The street performances. The live bands, the spontaneous dancing, strangers singing along together. That kind of energy is hard to resist.

☕ Fun facts?
She describes this moment in her life as exploratory.
In her spare time, she designs chalk signs for local businesses.

She’s team tea 🍵 — and tortilla WITH onion. Always. 🧅

Irene was drawn to MFR because of our commitment to building skills that last beyond the workshops. She wanted to be part of something focused on creating long-lasting change and we’re so glad she is.

At MFR, Irene is helping teach English classes, supporting our affiliated Clinical Psychologist with teaching duties, and contributing to internal systems and day-to-day operations.

She hopes to experience the warm community MFR fosters, meet lots of people along the way, and learn how a volunteer-run nonprofit functions from the inside out.

📸 Madrid through her eyes — this shot was taken at El Rastro on a Sunday, where Irene witnessed something she described beautifully: “People that have never met were spinning each other, singing along to the band, and if they didn’t know the song, they would clap.” From getting lost on the metro to long dinners that stretch into the night, she’s already seen Madrid’s special gift for human connection.

Noche de Exceso, Arte y Deseo — una noche inmersiva con una temática diversa que incluye estilos como cabaret, burlesque, circus, dark y diversidad de género, creada por Movimiento : un colectivo de artistas latinoamericanos, racializados y migrantes.

Nuestro enfoque principal incide en las minorías, en visibilizar y reivindicar los derechos enajenados. Nuestra dinámica y puesta en escena busca mostrar de manera visceral el valor cultural al que la sociedad se encuentra expuesta y que muchas veces pasa desapercibido, dando así a cada artista una voz y punto de vista, expresados desde su arte individual, con la finalidad de crear conciencia entre las comunidades.

So proud of Julia Álvarez for representing Madrid For Refugees at Amazon Madrid's International Women's Day event last month. 💜

Julia took part in a panel exploring how social commitment and technological development intertwine to create transformative opportunities — perfectly aligned with this year's theme: . She shared her inspiring journey of professional transition into software development, her work as a developer and teacher at Refugees Code, and her personal project Sunbathe App — a testament to how side projects can validate skills and build confidence.

The panel brought together Vanesa Cabral from Technovation Girls Spain / Power to code and Julia Álvarez from Madrid For Refugees to show how the act of giving — whether mentoring young girls to become creators of technology, or teaching crucial digital skills to people in professional transition — deeply enriches both the giver and the receiver, creating a virtuous circle of growth, empathy, and empowerment.

The event also featured a leadership roundtable, talks, networking, and mentoring — a full day of visibility, connection, and action.

Yesterday morning was a moment we will never forget. 🙏

We are deeply honored to share that two members of our program — Vika and Raúl — were invited to join the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency/ACNUR Spain delegation for a private audience with Her Majesty Queen Letizia of Spain, as part of the celebrations marking UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency's 75th anniversary.

Vika from Ukraine, is a Refugees Code graduate and now volunteer. Raul from El Salvador is a current Refugees Code Frontend teacher and student in our Data Science program. Together with refugees from Mali, Afghanistan, Sudan, Ukraine, Somalia, El Salvador, Venezuela, Colombia, Iraq and Syria, they shared their stories and experiences in a close and meaningful dialogue with the Queen about the situation of refugees and the challenges of international protection.

During the audience, ACNUR Spain highlighted community-based initiatives and organizations working alongside refugees in Spain. We are incredibly proud that from Madrid For Refugees was among those recognized, alongside: Maletas de Cartón, Asociación Espacio Rojo, Música Sin Fronteras, Djo Aminata, Dragones de Lavapies, and Refugiados Sin Fronteras.

This recognition belongs to every supporter, participant, collaborator, volunteer, and community member who has been part of Madrid For Refugees since 2015. Over 10 years of knowing that real change starts in the community — and yesterday, our work was seen at the highest level.

A heartfelt thank you to ACNUR Spain and Casa Real for this extraordinary space of dialogue, and for centering the voices of refugees.

Congratulations to our entire MFR community. This one is for all of you. 💙
