This series of studies by Haward relate to a project for a community resource in Cwmbran, Wales, U.K.

Acting as a narrative storyboard, they illustrate a unique facet of Foster’s working method: using drawings to outline the conceptual basis for a project, prior to developing a design proposal.

Simple and direct, they affirm the importance of community involvement in this project, and indicate the scope and purpose of the new building’s multiple functions in a way all interested parties, could readily comprehend.

Designed to stimulate employment and creative opportunities at a time of economic hardship, direct participation at the conceptual level was vital in order to reach a successful design. This new social stimulus would effectively have established a new building typology.

Though unrealised, the value of this inclusive, open approach to design remains compellingly prescient for the present.

Creating greater synergy across the broadest spectrum of design is mainstay of Norman Foster’s architectural projects. Though not always realised, attempts to achieve resonant harmonies between architectural space and art objects remain poignant.

One such example is recorded in these images of Norman Foster with leading sculptor Anish Kapoor (1954). Famous for his conceptual installations, which harness biomorphic forms and reflective surfaces, this proposal was designed around the space of the Great Court at The British Museum, London.

The work was designed to provide a visual anchor point for visitors, both screening and drawing attention to the ground-level entrance of the celebrated Reading Room. Its diminutive, perfunctory presence was all but lost in the expansiveness of the newly enclosed space.

This site-specific sculpture would serve as a logical gravitation point, reinforcing the historical access of the building with an unabashedly contemporary intervention.

The Norman Foster Foundation received the BIG SEE Award 2026 in Infrastructure at the BIG SEE Festival for Gateway to Venice’s Waterways, developed in collaboration with Porsche.

The project explores new approaches to sustainable mobility in Venice, rethinking the relationship between infrastructure, water and urban life while respecting the city’s extraordinary cultural heritage.

This recognition reflects the collective effort, creativity and dedication of all the teams and collaborators involved in bringing this vision to life.

The Norman Foster Foundation is delighted to announce that the WING display vitrine has received one of the most prestigious design awards, the Compasso d’Oro ADI Prize, at the official ceremony in Milan this May 2026.

The product is the result of a successful collaboration between the Norman Foster Foundation lead by Norman Foster and the leading manufacturer

Created to meet the rigours of a museum display, the WING
vitrine is a modular system which combines art lighting and
climatic control to conservation standards, with integrated
adjustable lighting for each unit.

Adaptable for displays of multiple objects, the resulting design is an enduring tribute to skill and expertise, propelled by imagination, to rise to the challenge of realising new exemplars of design within a highlyspecialised field.

The WING vitrine is currently on display at the ADI Museum, Milan

As part of the Bloomberg CityLab 2026, the world’s preeminent global cities summit held this week in Madrid, the Norman Foster Foundation hosted an evening reception for mayors and city leaders from across the globe. Guests had the opportunity to visit the NFI Centre for City Science, our applied research facility dedicated to the study of sustainable urban futures through architecture, technology and city governance.

Bloomberg CityLab brings together over 1,000 mayors, policymakers and urban innovators each year to share practical solutions and strengthen city-to-city cooperation. The Norman Foster Foundation was honoured to open its doors to so many of the leaders shaping the future of our cities. Design is one of the most powerful and underutilised tools of city leadership and conversations like those held this week remind us that the decisions made in city halls today will define how billions of people live tomorrow.

Thank you to Bloomberg Philanthropies and to every mayor and delegate who joined us.

Norman Foster delivered a keynote at the Bloomberg Mayors Innovation Studio (MIS) at Museo Reina Sofía, engaging 88 mayors from six continents.

Centred on ‘the city as a design legacy’, the session examined how urban decisions shape long-term environmental, social and civic outcomes and the role of leadership in guiding that process.

Part of an ongoing dialogue with city leaders working across diverse contexts and scales.
