This series of studies by Haward relate to a project for a community resource in Cwmbran, Wales, U.K.
Acting as a narrative storyboard, they illustrate a unique facet of Foster’s working method: using drawings to outline the conceptual basis for a project, prior to developing a design proposal.
Simple and direct, they affirm the importance of community involvement in this project, and indicate the scope and purpose of the new building’s multiple functions in a way all interested parties, could readily comprehend.
Designed to stimulate employment and creative opportunities at a time of economic hardship, direct participation at the conceptual level was vital in order to reach a successful design. This new social stimulus would effectively have established a new building typology.
Though unrealised, the value of this inclusive, open approach to design remains compellingly prescient for the present.
