ian food shopping at a Chinese shop having been led there by a Ghanaian…. It is like a Spanish man asking a Ghanaian which is the best jamón to serve or how to cook paella or worst still a Chinese man asking you to teach him or her how to cook sushi. From that day onwards, he started asking questions like, what are the Ghanaians doing here in Spain? Why have we left the sale of our main dish in the hands of someone who has no clue how to prepare them? Eighty per cent of 200 Ghanaians interviewed, some of whom are friends and family, cannot wait to get their residence documents to leave and work abroad. This was an astonishing discovery which also compelled him to ask his next question; that, if we all leave to work abroad, how many of us will remain in order to build a healthy and a thriving Ghanaian community to make life worth living in Spain? It is therefore no surprise that even today as we speak, you will find some Ghanaians among us who have being living here for over 20 years, yet, it is hard to find a Ghanaian lawyer, accountant, doctor or even a nurse in Spain. It is only right that we acknowledge and should not lose sight of the fact that 20 years ago, conditions were a lot harder for both immigrants and the Spaniards whose conutry we live in. Those days are well and truly behind us, we need to look at ourselves and ask what have we done since then? What are we going to do from now on? and where do we want to be in the next 10 years? Have you thought about it? VOGS is our answer to solving some, if not, all the above questions. The aim is to bring all Ghanaians living in Spain together under one roof through entertainment, to get to know one another, encourage education, help each other, promote Ghanaian businesses, create jobs among ourselves, learn the Spanish culture which will help us to integrate as one should, thereby, improving job search opportunities but also educate our "Host" through these cultural activities so they, in return, will learn and know that Ghanaians in general are God fearing, warm at heart and most importantly fun loving people. October 1st 2011 was the first of many get together events to come and our first step of creating a thriving Ghanaian community in Spain.
