LECTURE | “Exhibiting Classicism: A History of Contested Truths” by Barry Bergdoll.

Lecture by Barry Bergdoll at the 1st International Conference on 20th-Century Classical Architecture, held from February 19 to 21, 2026, at the School of Architecture of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (ETSAM–UPM)

This lecture explores how architectural exhibitions have historically functioned not merely as displays of completed works, but as powerful instruments of cultural and artistic transformation. It argues that classicism was not always associated with conservatism; on the contrary, it often operated as a progressive and innovative force, particularly during the eighteenth century, when architects employed classical forms to promote new social, political, and urban ideals. The lecture further examines how, by the 1970s and 1980s, architectural exhibitions revived interest in classical and historical references, contributing to the rise of postmodernism and reopening critical debates about the relationship between architecture, history, and modern society.

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK | “New Traditional Architecture in Sidi Bou Said: Continuation of a Legacy” by Tarek Ben Miled

“Over my career I have carried out a large number of projects in Sidi Bou Said, an iconic site of traditional Tunisian architecture. Its geographic location has given rise to an ensemble characterized by the influence of various Mediterranean cultures, such as Italian, Andalusi, or Egyptian. The village’s architecture is distinguished for its harmonious integration with the landscape and an urban design providing for both the private and public lives of its inhabitants.

In each of the projects I have done here since the late seventies, I have sought to make every new design incorporate the place’s characteristic traditional building techniques, local materials, and architectural forms to the point that these new buildings have blended with the existing ones so as to seem to have been there for centuries.

All these projects reflect the importance of preserving the original character of this ensemble, though without neglecting the requirements of contemporary life.”

LECTURE | “Armando Brasini’s Legacy and Contemporary Classical Architecture” by Renata Jadresin-Milic.

Lecture by Renata Jadresin-Milic at the 1st International Conference on 20th-Century Classical Architecture, held from February 19 to 21, 2026, at the School of Architecture of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (ETSAM–UPM)

This lecture responds to this historiographical gap through a focused examination of the work of Armando Brasini (1879–1965), a prolific and visionary Italian architect whose contributions remain underrepresented in international architectural discourse. Brasini’s work spans monumental public buildings, urban proposals, infrastructural projects, and visionary architectural schemes, many of them centrally located and deeply embedded within the historical fabric of Rome. Drawing upon a wide range of architectural precedents, from Ancient Roman architecture, Medieval sources, Italian Renaissance and Baroque, to the fantastical visions and imaginative reconstructions of Piranesi, Brasini developed a distinctive architectural language characterised by bold volumetric compositions, dramatic spatial sequences, and a highly sophisticated engagement with site, scale, and context. Despite the scale, ambition, and relevance of his work, Brasini occupies a marginal position within mainstream twentieth-century architectural surveys and is largely absent from international scholarship, and even from the majority of architectural itineraries of Rome

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK | The Church of Santiago Apóstol in Valcabado del Páramo: A Little Village Near León Saves its “Mudéjar Heaven” by Agustín Castellanos Miguélez and Ricardo Cambas Vallinas.

The inhabitants of the village of Valcabado del Páramo in León province have for years been rallying round to save from ruin the sixteenth-century roof and ceiling of the Church of Santiago, one of the most notable of its kind along the Vía de la Plata—the “Silver Way” trade and pilgrim route in western Spain. This has involved organizing countless activities and collecting the necessary monies for a restoration with a crowdfunding campaign, which has allowed the project to go ahead.

Moreover, in collaboration with pupils and instructors from the structural carpentry courses at the León Trades Center, they have had two new roof structures built—over the chancel and porch—using the traditional techniques of Mudéjar carpentry, as the original structures had disappeared over the years. They have also founded a Mudéjar Carpentry Association for the Vía de la Plata and its area of influence, including 13 locations in the provinces of León and Zamora with Mudéjar ceilings, and set up a Visitor Center from which they arrange guided tours along the route of Mudéjar ceilings.

Last night marked the ceremony of the latest edition of the Arthur Ross Awards, hosted by Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. Alejandro García Hermida, director of the Traditional Building Cultures Foundation, was honored with the prestigious Arthur Ross Award in the “Education” category.

Presented annually by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA), the awards recognize the achievements and contributions of architects, artists, artisans, landscape designers, educators, publishers, patrons, and others dedicated to preserving and advancing the classical tradition.

On behalf of the Traditional Building Cultures Foundation, we would like to thank the entire organization for the magnificent evening. It was a wonderful occasion to reconnect with old friends and forge new friendships, united by shared principles.
