Following his release, Club de Madrid Member and former Prime Minister of Mali Moussa Mara Yelema has called for unity, reconciliation and forgiveness, encouraging Malians to overcome divisions and move forward together.

Throughout his detention, Club de Madrid repeatedly called for his release and stood in solidarity with him, his family and all those defending democratic principles and fundamental freedoms in Mali.

We welcome his return to public life and stand with his call for dialogue, reconciliation and national cohesion.

How can digital influence become a force for stronger democracy?

Last week in Pretoria, 🇿🇦 Club de Madrid brought together young people, influencers and digital creators, political leaders, civil society, academia and democratic institutions for the National Influencer Code Summit 2026 — a space to explore how digital influence can be transformed into meaningful democratic participation.

As South Africa prepares for its 2026 Local Government Elections, discussions addressed some of the most pressing challenges shaping democracy online: ethical influence, electoral integrity, misinformation and disinformation, online safety, public trust and youth participation.

A particular highlight was the participation of Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, former Deputy President of South Africa and former Executive Director of UN Women, who reflected on the role of young people, civic participation and responsible influence in strengthening democratic societies.

We were also proud to see WYDE Women Leadership Network Members Hon Joanah Mamombe, Yvonne Wamucii and Asanda Luwaca contributing their perspectives to the conversation, bringing women's leadership and diverse experiences into the debate on how digital spaces can strengthen democratic participation.

Convened by Club de Madrid in partnership with Women of Firsts by Asanda Luwaca, the Summit formed part of “The Influence Code: Youth Shaping Democracy in the Digital Age”, within the Women and Youth in Democracy (WYDE) programme, supported by the European Union.

The message from Pretoria was clear: digital influence comes with responsibility — and young people must not only participate in democracy, but help shape how it evolves.

💧 How can Nature-based Solutions strengthen water governance and climate resilience at the local level?

On 6–7 August, Club de Madrid and Aba Climate Solutions brought together municipal practitioners and public authorities in Fortaleza, Brazil, for a Municipal Peer Exchange Workshop on Nature-based Solutions (NbS).

Technical staff from Maranguape, Sobral and Fortaleza shared their projects and experiences with representatives from Brazil and Uruguay and regional development institutions, including CAF -banco de desarrollo de América Latina y el Caribe- exchanging practical approaches to protecting and restoring ecosystems while strengthening water governance.

The workshop was held within the framework of Water and Democracy: Building Governance from Local and National to Global Levels, building on discussions from our on the importance of recognising water as a Global Public Good and strengthening the governance systems that underpin its sustainable management.

¡Celebramos que los líderes indígenas guatemaltecos Luis Pacheco y Héctor Chaclán salieron de la prisión Mariscal Zavala!

En febrero y junio organizamos dos misiones donde nuestro fundador Carlos Alvarado Quesada los visitó en prisión junto con los integrantes de cada misión. Los equipos conocieron su historia e hicieron un llamado por la libertad de ambos.

Después de un año y tres meses en prisión preventiva por participar en las manifestaciones pacíficas realizadas en 2023 en defensa del voto y de la voluntad popular, Luis y Héctor, líderes indígenas de los 48 Cantones de Totonicapán, hoy estarán con sus familias.

Gran avance para la democracia guatemalteca.

🌍 How can we rebuild hope in times of growing inequality, climate injustice and democratic backsliding?

We are pleased to share that Demócrata has published a new op-ed co-authored by Aminata Touré, former Prime Minister of Senegal and Member of Club de Madrid, and Amitabh Behar, Executive Director of Oxfam International.

In their article, they argue that the world is not facing a lack of solutions, but rather a lack of political will. They call for renewed multilateralism, stronger international cooperation, and a greater role for civil society in addressing today's interconnected global challenges—from inequality and climate justice to the defence of democracy and international law.
