A timely and constructive meeting took place today in London between our Vice President Michelle Bachelet and our Member Gordon Brown.

Their exchange focused on the future of international cooperation, inclusive policymaking, and the urgent need to strengthen global common goods in an increasingly complex world.

At a time of growing uncertainty, leadership and experience such as theirs remain essential to advancing meaningful and democratic solutions to global challenges.

These conversations will continue at the upcoming Club de Madrid Annual Policy Dialogue in Madrid, 22–24 June, where Members and partners will come together to shape forward-looking responses to today’s most pressing issues.

Some of the most consequential decisions about AI will not be made by technologists alone — they will be made by leaders committed to safeguarding democracy, human rights, and inclusive governance.

Last week, Regulating AI and Club de Madrid convened a closed-door strategic dialogue on Democratic AI Governance, bringing together former heads of state, global policy leaders, and AI experts from across the world to reflect on one of the defining challenges of our time: how to ensure AI serves democratic societies and the public good.

The discussion featured valuable contributions from:
• Sanjay Puri, President, Regulating AI
• Esko Aho, Former Prime Minister of Finland and Member of Club de Madrid
• Tarja Halonen, Former President of the Republic of Finland and Member of Club de Madrid
• Sean Cleary, Chairman of Strategic Concepts (India) Pvt. Ltd. (Pty) Ltd. and Advisor of Club de Madrid
• Obiageli Oby Ezekwesili, Former Minister of Education of Nigeria and Advisor of Club de Madrid
• Rubén Campos, Director of Programs, Club de Madrid
• Micky Tripathi, Chief AI Implementation Officer, Mayo Clinic
• Preetam Maloor, Head of the Emerging Technologies Division, International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
• Guillaume Andro, Management & Technology Consulting, EY

As AI continues to reshape institutions, economies, and societies, democratic leadership and international cooperation will be essential to ensure accountability, trust, and human-centred governance.
More conversations to come.

Plataforma CIPÓ Global Policy Dialogue 2026, held in May 25-26 in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, analyzed the legacy of COP30 and the implementation prospects for COP31.

Club de Madrid Advisor Allyson Maynard-Gibson addressed the audience at this important event, which gathered high-level Brazilian political representatives, various relevant civil society organizations from numerous countries, and key international agencies for global climate management.

Following last year's International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion on climate change, Maynard-Gibson shared her perspective on states' obligations, describing the ruling as "a turning point in the evolution of climate governance and modern multilateralism."

🌍 Global Public Goods can only be protected through democratic leadership, international cooperation and collective responsibility.

This June, Club de Madrid will convene former Presidents and Prime Ministers, policymakers and experts in Madrid for the Annual Policy Dialogue 2026.

Through the voices of Club de Madrid Members Danilo Türk, Leo Varadkar T.D., George A. Papandreou and Stefan Löfven, this video reminds us that democracy is not only about representation — it is about ensuring that everyone has a say in how our shared global goods are governed.

As Leo Varadkar T.D. states, the world’s most successful societies “tend to be democracies. And that’s not a coincidence.”

“Global Public Goods belong to humankind as a whole.” — Danilo Türk

George A. Papandreou warns, when citizens are excluded from decisions affecting Global Public Goods, alienation grows and democracy itself is weakened.

And Stefan Löfven reminds us that because Global Public Goods are for everyone, governing them democratically means being inclusive and ensuring that everybody is on board.

This week Club de Madrid, together with Nuru Trust Network and SDGs Kenya Forum, convened the High-Level Dialogue “Youth Leadership as Drivers of Gender Equality in Kenya” in Nairobi as part of the European Commission’s WYDE Civic Engagement Initiative.

The dialogue brought together young leaders, policymakers, civil society representatives and international partners to discuss how youth participation can advance gender equality, inclusive governance and democratic resilience in Kenya.

As highlighted by Mokgweetsi Masisi, former President of Botswana and Member of Club de Madrid:
💬 “Young people should be viewed as a resource rather than a problem. Governments must create environments that encourage multi-generational conversations and support young people to grow through experience.”

Discussions focused on the barriers that continue to limit youth political participation — particularly for young women — including structural discrimination, the high cost of political participation and the slow implementation of gender equality commitments.

We were honoured to count on the participation of:
🎙️ Mokgweetsi E. K. Masisi, former President of Botswana and Member of Club de Madrid
🎙️ Chiggai Harriette, Special Advisor on Women’s Rights to the President of Kenya
🎙️ Madelena Monoja — Deputy Resident Representative, UNDP Kenya
🎙️ Antonia N'Gabala-Sodonon, UN Women Representative to Kenya
🎙️ Gloria Wawira, National Youth Council Kenya
🎙️ Yvonne Wamucii, Office of the President’s Special Programmes, Kenya, and member of Club de Madrid’s WYDE Network of Young Decision Makers
👏 Special thanks as well to moderator Nathaniel Mong'are for guiding a rich and engaging discussion.

🌍 Strengthening youth leadership is essential to building more inclusive, representative and democratic societies.
