Madrid Branch Royal British Legion

Madrid Branch Royal British Legion The Madrid Branch of the RBL was constituted in November 2022 and became an official branch (BR4041) in January 2023 as part of Spain District North.

About the Royal British Legion
Membership is open to everyone who shares the values of the Legion to support the Armed Forces community, irrespective of nationality or background. The Royal British Legion is the United Kingdom’s leading Armed Forces charity providing care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces past and present and their families. It is also the national Custodian o

f Remembrance and safeguards the Armed Forces Covenant between the nation and its Armed Forces. It is best known for the annual Poppy Appeal and its emblem the red poppy. Our branch members predominantly come from the Madrid area, and are a mix of British, Spanish and other nationals, serving military personnel and military veterans, civilians, men and women, as well as a small youth element. The Royal Charter
The Royal British Legion is a body incorporated by Royal Charter. The Charter sets out the RBL’s objectives and powers. It also details how the organisation is to be structured, organised, managed and run. The first Charter was granted to the British Legion, as it was known then, in 1925 by King George Ⅴ. That first Charter has been changed by various Supplemental Charters to develop alongside the needs of the serving and ex-Service community, and the evolving structure of The Royal British Legion. HM King Charles Ⅲ is the Patron of the Legion. Support
The Royal British Legion provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces community – serving men and women, veterans and their families wherever they are in the world. If you are a serving member of the Armed Forces, have served or are the dependent or carer of someone who has served in the UK’s Armed Forces, then you could be eligible for help from our Branch in Madrid. Check the Support page for a complete list of eligible beneficiaries. Spain District North also has a Community Support Coordinator who can provide help. He is available from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, at +34 676 451 780 or you can email [email protected]. Meetings
The Madrid Branch usually meets at The Secret Kingdoms bookshop on the first Sunday of the month at 5.30pm, except in the new year and in summer. Check the Events page for exact dates. The bookshop is located at Calle Moratín 7, 28014 Madrid.

110th anniversary of the Wipers Times

The Wipers Times was a trench magazine that was published by British soldiers fighting in the Ypres Salient during the First World War. The paper consisted of poems, reflections, wry in‑jokes and lampoons of the military situation the Division was in. In general the paper maintained a humorously ironic style.
In early 1916, the 12th Battalion Sherwood Foresters stationed in the front line at Ypres in Belgium, came across an abandoned printing press. A sergeant who had been a printer in peacetime salvaged it and printed a sample page. The paper itself was named after the Tommy slang pronunciation of Ypres.

Under its initial title The Wipers Times or Salient News, the first issue was published on 12th February 1916, with a circulation of one hundred copies. It was followed by another 22 issues, mostly consisting of 12 pages each.

The names of the staff involved in the paper are mostly unrecorded. The editor was Captain (later Lieutenant‑Colonel) Frederick John Roberts MC, the sub‑editor was Lieutenant (later Lieutenant‑Colonel) John Hesketh (“Jack”) Pearson DSO MC. A notable contributor to the paper was the Gunner Gilbert Frankau. Also worthy of note are the engravings by E.J. Couzens; his portrait of a chinless platoon commander clutching his cane and wondering “Am I as offensive as I might be?” became the paper’s motif.

Members of the branch were delighted to be invited to judge the cake competition at the 1st British Scouts Madrid Christmas celebration this year. Whilst the Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts had their ingenuity tested through games and challenges led by the Explorers and the indomitable leaders of the group, we faced the gruelling challenge of tasting and judging cakes and cookies made by the youngsters.
It was a really engaging and enjoyable afternoon for everyone involved, and the icing on the cake was that, completely unbeknown to us, those generous people donated every single cent raised on the day to the RBL! We can’t wait for the group’s next event.

The 1st Majadahonda British Scouts invited us to come and speak about the work of the Royal British Legion. We gave a short talk on Armistice Day, the importance to remember, the significance of the poppy. We also mentioned that some of the Scouts would be attending Remembrance Sunday, and the importance of that service. We ended the presentation with a short procession with the RBL standard and the 1st Majadahonda flag, followed the Exhortation, two minutes of silence, and the Kohima Epitaph.

I want Parliament to make it a criminal offence for anyone to dishonestly claim to have served in the Armed Forces, or to wear military uniforms or medals they are not entitled to wear.

On Tuesday the 11th of November, members of the branch attended the Armistice Day celebrations at the British Cemetery, alongside serving members of His Majesty’s Armed Forces which were headed up by Capt Antony Crabb RN, the UK Defence Attaché (DA). Wreaths were laid at six graves by a number of foreign DAs, RAF personnel, and the Chair of the Madrid Branch RBL.

These Acts of Remembrance are perhaps the most moving of all that are conducted during Remembrancetide, as it’s the serving members and veterans of His Majesty’s Forces themselves, that are paying homage to the fallen.
