🚨 IMDEA Materials is seeking a qualified candidate for an ambitious project that aims to advance the understanding and optimisation of processing of Zn- and Ti-based alloys by combining alloy development, advanced manufacturing, operando synchrotron imaging, and multiscale microstructural characterisation.

A central aspect of the project is the use of high-speed synchrotron X-ray imaging to directly observe dynamic phenomena occurring during the LPBF process, including melt pool evolution, vapour plume dynamics, keyhole instabilities, and defect formation mechanisms.

These experiments will be performed in close collaboration with the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility through the AM Beam Allocation Group coordinated by IMDEA Materials.

The project further integrates advanced data analytics, image processing, and correlative characterisation methodologies to accelerate materials development and process optimisation for next-generation metallic alloys.

🥑 💊 Researchers at IMDEA Materials Institute and the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology (ICTP-CSIC) have developed an innovative biodegradable multilayer film capable of protecting and controlling the release of anthocyanins inside the body.

Published in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, this breakthrough opens the door to more effective functional foods and supplements for intestinal health.

🗣️ "The main advantage of this biomaterial is its controlled and pH-sensitive release capability," explained the lead author of the publication, Dr. Sabina Lachowicz-Wiśniewska, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions ( ) postdoctoral researcher at IMDEA Materials.

The authors behind the publication include Dr. Lachowicz-Wiśniewska, Dr. Maciej Haranczyk, and Dr. Juan Pedro Fernandez Blazquez from IMDEA Materials, as well as Dr. Miryam Criado Gonzalez and Dr. Rebeca Hernandez Velasco from ICTP-CSIC.

🔋As become increasingly common on our roads, ensuring the safety of their battery systems has become a critical challenge for manufacturers and regulators alike.

A new initiative at IMDEA Materials, EV Shield, aims to address one of the most significant risks associated with lithium-ion batteries: .

Led by postdoctoral researcher Dr. Xiang Ao, and supported through the institute's Materialise programme, the project is developing a novel lightweight material capable of acting as both a heat shield and a protective enclosure for electric vehicle batteries during fire events.

"The project is focused on creating a material that can withstand very intense fire scenarios while helping manufacturers meet increasingly demanding safety requirements," explains Dr Ao.

The one-year project will build upon previous research that has already demonstrated promising fire-resistance performance.
