On the cusp of summer, we had a meeting full of inspiring, thought-provoking speeches — from why football stops a country, to how when we say something matters as much as what we say, to the love story behind Alfonso XII.

Then it was off to our summer dinner for chats and lols.

We said a huge thank you to our outgoing board and president for their brilliant work this year, and welcomed in the new board and president.

We are Toastmasters Madrid. And we are also part of 107 Toastmasters (Spain, Portugal, Algeria, Andorra, Gibraltar and Tunisia).

Last week’s Spring Conference took place in Málaga and took first place in the Speech Evaluation Contest.

Because you see, Toastmasters is not only about public speaking — it’s also about learning a very important skill: giving constructive feedback in such a way that motivates and encourages (and never deflates).

More filler words, please.
Never heard of that before, right?

Filler words are those little words we all tend to overuse: “ummm”, “ahhh”, “soooo”.

Each time we include a filler word in a speech, we are fined 10 cents. All money goes towards Kiva — a non-profit that helps support small entrepreneurs through microloans.

TM Madrid has collaborated with Kiva since 2014 and has completed 48 loans since then.

Not only do you improve your public speaking skills at Toastmasters, you also pick up new words like perspicacious (similar to insightful, in case you didn’t know 😉).
