Alastair and I kept getting the same question from people planning their move to Spain — “but what will it actually cost me, in my city, for my family?”

The generic answers weren’t cutting it. So we built something better.

Our Cost of Living Calculator covers 11 cities across Spain. You pick your cities, your household size, your housing type, school preference, and whether you want insurance quotes included — and it spits out a full breakdown in Excel.

Rent. Groceries. Utilities. Schools. Transport. Eating out. Healthcare. All priced by city, not by national average. Built from real data — Idealista rental prices, actual supermarket baskets, local provider tariffs.

City comparison is free. The full breakdown is €18.

If you want the real numbers before you make the move, this is for you.

The 183-day rule is the one that catches people most off guard.  Not because it’s obscure — it isn’t. But because the consequences aren’t obvious until you’re already past the threshold.

Spend 183 days or more in Spain in a calendar year and you are a Spanish tax resident. Worldwide income. Annual declaration. Regardless of what’s happening with your home-country tax situation.

We sat down with our co-founder, Alison, and asked her the question we get all the time — how did you actually end up in Spain? 🇪🇸 Her answer? She didn’t plan any of it.

After years in the corporate world in Australia, Alison was burnt out. So she and her family did something that felt a little crazy at the time — packed up, took a year off, and moved to Europe.

Her son was seven. They were only coming for one year. That was the plan.

But when they got there, something shifted. They were different people. More relaxed and more present. And life was — at that point — so much more affordable than back home.

After that first year, Alison and Alastair had decided they needed to find a way to stay.

And that’s how Moving to Spain was born. 🌞

The number one question we get: can I actually afford to live in Spain?

Not in a vague way. People want to know what life will actually cost in Valencia versus Barcelona. Whether a pension income goes far enough. What a realistic monthly budget looks like for a family.  So we built something to answer that properly: The Cost of Living Calculator. Made with over 1,600 data points in 11 Spanish cities.

Rent, groceries, dining, healthcare, transport, utilities. Real numbers, not aspirational ones.  Free to use. Swipe to see what the data showed us.

San Diego delivered. Amanda and Alison spent the weekend at Move Abroad Con 2026 and it was a fantastic weekend.

They gave a talk to 400+ people covering everything you need to know about moving to Spain, then spent hours in one-on-one conversations with over 50 people planning their move.

A highlight? Watching the Padres at Petco Park with our community, clients, and relocation partners from around the world. It turns out baseball and Spain relocation planning go surprisingly well together.

A huge thank you to the team for putting on such a well-organised, genuinely useful event. If you were there and we spoke, it was a real pleasure. We look forward to the next conversation.

If you weren’t there but you’re planning a move, you know where to find us.
