Red Alert in Spain: Storm Leonardo Triggers Mass Evacuations 🌊🚨

Southern Spain is currently facing an "extraordinary" weather emergency as Storm Leonardo slams the Iberian Peninsula. Authorities have issued the highest possible alerts, with parts of Andalusia bracing for what could be a year's worth of rain in just a few days.

Here is the situation on the ground as of Wednesday:
Mass Evacuations: Over 3,000 residents have been moved from flood-prone areas in Málaga, Cádiz, and Jaén as a "preventive measure" to avoid a repeat of past tragedies. 🏠🏃‍♂️
Red Alert Status: AEMET (Spain’s weather agency) has activated Red Alerts for torrential rain. A tropical "atmospheric river" is merging with the storm, threatening to dump up to 250mm (nearly 10 inches) of rain on already saturated ground. 🌧️⚠️
Total Shutdown: Almost all train services across Andalusia have been canceled, and schools are closed in every province except Almería. Even the Sierra Nevada ski resort has shut its doors. 🚆🚫
Rivers at Breaking Point: Multiple rivers, including the Guadiaro near Málaga, have already burst their banks, flooding homes and cutting off entire districts. 🌊🏘️
The "Sponge" Effect: Experts warn that Spain is currently "full like a sponge" after its wettest January in decades, meaning the ground simply cannot absorb any more water. 🧽💦
Emergency services and the military are on high alert as the storm is expected to continue its peak intensity through Thursday.

Our thanks go out to those who attended the centre today on a day that was rather wet and dreary at times and especially to those that joined our association (13 new members)

Help Veja Baja had a representative present and looked very busy.

We also had a nurse Lynn present to do some health checks and again she was busy with various people who were members.

The centre was packed out today with everyone mixing talking and making new friends which is the whole mission of the centre and it was great to see people actually talking rather than always being on their mobile phones.

A big thank you also goes out to all our volunteers who without them devoting their time and energy the centre could not function....well done to you all. 👏

Our itinerary for Feb is posted on our page and also in the centre itself so please attend any of the activities advertised and make use of the centre.

As you may or may not know the centre/association is to be "self funding" and therefore all your kind donations for tea/coffee/biscuits and water plus memberships go towards the running expenses....water, electricity, gas, Insurance and IBI.

You should have a copy of the "benefits of membership" given when you joined and which we hope to expand on during the year to include more items.

Should you have any ideas on improvements or would like to see an activity that you would be interested in please either approach a volunteer or committee member (Barry, Mike,David, April or Pat) and let them know your thoughts and suggestions.

These will be discussed among the committee and also with the volunteers and will be reported on to the suggesting person.

This is your centre let's hear your opinions and suggestions.

Again many thanks to all attendees today and of course the volunteers ...in the immortal words of a well known leader......let's make this "a great centre".

Thank you for your support
David Fraser (Treasurer)
