Sudden sea retreat at Jávea’s Arenal.

A sudden and unusual retreat of the sea was seen at Arenal beach yesterday, Monday, 24 August, with the water pulling noticeably away from the shoreline and temporarily exposing part of the seabed. A strong current was also noticed flowing out through the Fontana Canal towards the sea.

The phenomenon is possibly a rissaga, or meteotsunami, although this has not been officially confirmed by AEMET.

A meteotsunami is a sudden change in sea level caused by atmospheric conditions rather than an earthquake. Rapid changes in atmospheric pressure, often associated with storms or unstable weather, can create waves that travel across the sea. When these waves reach shallow or enclosed coastal areas, the water can suddenly withdraw from the shore and then return, sometimes quite dramatically.

Similar effects were reportedly noticed elsewhere along the Marina Alta coast.

Another unusual sign reported during the event was that one person noticed his hair suddenly standing on end. This can occur when a strong electrical field develops in the atmosphere, often associated with storm activity. While it does not by itself confirm an imminent lightning strike, it is considered a warning sign to take thunderstorms seriously and move to a safe, enclosed location.

The phenomenon can be unsettling, but the sudden withdrawal of the water does not necessarily mean a conventional tsunami is approaching. Nevertheless, anyone on the beach who notices an unusually rapid or significant change in sea level should move away from the shoreline and follow any instructions from the authorities.

Riurau d’Arnauda Markets Return This Weekend
The popular Riurau d’Arnauda markets return to Jávea this weekend, bringing crafts, live music, creativity and vintage goods.
• Saturday 29 August, 6:30–11:30pm: Mercat d’Origen with handmade crafts, a tote-bag decorating workshop and live Cuban music from Cumbancha Mi Son.
• Sunday 30 August, 9:30am–2pm: Antiques & Vintage Market, featuring restored furniture, clothing, unique pieces and collectibles.

A good news story (for a change!)
Yesterday, during the storm, some residents found a bird sheltering on the terrace of their home and alerted the Local Police.

The bird, which appears to be a Egyptian vulture, was collected by the police, who subsequently contacted the wildlife recovery services of the Regional Ministry of Environment. They are expected to collect it this morning for assessment and rehabilitation.

A small rescue story in the midst of a day marked by strong winds, fallen branches, some tree damage and other minor incidents, but thankfully without any major damage.

The yellow plastic band with the code "C41" on its leg indicates that this bird is part of an active wildlife monitoring or conservation project. Researchers tag these endangered birds as nestlings or during rehabilitation to track their migration routes, survival rates, and behavioral patterns. ( Source - Youtube)

On Saturday 22nd August, Jávea will be lit by more than 16,000 candles.
Nit de Sant Bartolomé – “A Town by Candlelight”, transforming Jávea’s historic centre with candles, music, activities and shops open late.

Programme
• 7:30pm – Mass at Sant Bartolomé Church
• 7:45pm – Candles are lit
• 8:30pm – Vigil with Hakuma
Throughout the evening – more than six live musical performances around the old town, including:
• Blues en la Plaça
• Bassudo
• Jávea's Centre Artístic Musical Youth Orchestra
• Marek Brazda on piano
• “Baila con la Marina Lindy Hop” – live DJ and swing dancing
Some shops and businesses in the historic centre will also extend their opening hours for the evening.
What's new this year?
The candle displays will cover more areas of the old town. In addition, Ronda Norte and Calle Príncipe de Asturias will be pedestrianised during the celebration, making it easier for people to walk around and enjoy the candlelit streets.
The event is organised by Sant Bartolomé Parish and Jávea Town Hall, with support from AMJASA and Jávea Històrica.

Respect capacity limits and follow the instructions of security and emergency services.

Keep natural areas clean and take all your rubbish away with you.

Take extreme precautions to prevent fires: do not throw cigarette butts on the ground or light fires. Barbecues are strictly prohibited.

Camping and overnight stays are prohibited throughout the municipality.

Protect your eyesight: only use specially designed eclipse glasses that comply with ISO 12312-2 standards.

The Assumption of Mary is a NATIONAL public holiday that is celebrated on the 15th of August in Spain and throughout many other parts of the world. It represents a day off for the general public.

This major religious festival celebrates the belief that God raised the body of the Virgin Mary after her death to heaven where she reunited with her soul. At first, the holiday was supposed to replace the previous pagan harvest festival and since the 18th century the feast of the Assumption has been celebrated.
