Service in AA – Treasurer

The Treasurer's role has always been about more than collecting the basket.

Today, groups may receive contributions in cash or even through a card reader. But the principle remains the same: Tradition Seven reminds us that AA is fully self-supporting through our own contributions.

The Treasurer helps make sure the rent gets paid, literature and refreshments are available, contributions are made to GSO and the group has the funds it needs to keep carrying the message.

Here in Spain, there can also be additional challenges, with banks sometimes requesting formal registration documents when groups try to open an account.

Service helps keep the doors open - for you, for the newcomer, and for everyone who needs AA.

As one member on our convention poster says:

"My accountability to the meeting keeps me sober. Being a part of a team and being needed is an important part of my recovery."

Another member put it simply: service gets you to the meeting even when you don't feel like it.

Service in AA – Literature Secretary

In an age when so much AA literature is available online, is there still a need for a Literature Secretary?

Absolutely.

There is something powerful about being able to pick up a Big Book at a meeting, give a newcomer a starter pack, or simply point someone towards the words they need at the right moment.

The Literature Secretary helps make sure the group has the literature it needs - from Big Books and pamphlets to newcomer packs - that stocks are replenished and that AA literature remains visible and accessible to everyone who comes through the door.

But service is about more than the task itself.

Service in AA – Group Secretary

The Group Secretary is often one of the first faces of recovery that newcomers meet.

They welcome members, open the meeting, read the AA Preamble and key messages, help ensure our Traditions are upheld, keep the meeting running smoothly, and often become the main point of contact for the group. They may travel to other meetings to invite speakers, organise Twelfth Step calls, open the venue, keep time, pass the basket for Tradition Seven, and help create a safe and welcoming home group.

Some evenings there may be only two people in the room. On others, there may be two hundred. Whatever the attendance, the Secretary helps ensure that every meeting carries the same message of hope and recovery.

At the 2026 Costa del Sol Convention, we're celebrating the many ways service strengthens recovery.

A First Look at the 2026 Convention Programme!

We're really excited to share the first overview of the 2026 Costa del Sol AA Convention Programme. Over the coming weeks we'll be highlighting many of the new meetings, workshops and special events in more detail, but here's a quick look at what to expect.

This year the convention will run across three meeting rooms, each with its own unique programme.

The Córdoba Room is our Main Hall, hosting the keynote speakers, themed meetings, entertainment, Quiz Night, Icebreaker Session, the AA/Al-Anon Top Table, YPAA meeting, and our closing Raffle & Sobriety Countdown.

On the day registration opens at 12:00 noon on Friday (cash only – €30) and the first Main Hall themed meeting begins at 3:00pm.

If you're arriving early, don't worry - you don't have to wait until Friday to get involved! On Thursday evening, we'll be holding our popular Early Bird Meetings: an AA Meeting followed by an Al-Anon Meeting

The first main hall meeting will start at 3pm and then on Friday evening, our much-loved Icebreaker Session returns, followed by the official Convention Welcome Meeting and the first of two keynote talks from our main speaker, Tim M (London).

The Sevilla Room will host a full Al-Anon programme throughout the weekend, including meetings, workshops and fellowship.

The Almería Room will be buzzing from the very start of the convention, with hourly Marathon Meetings ("One Hour at a Time") beginning at 9:00am on Friday. It will also host our LGBTQ+ programme, workshops, Public Information session, and dedicated Men's and Women's meetings.

Although the is only the beginning, we are often asked what time the convention will finish - the answer is at 4pm on Sunday.

There is so much more to share, and over the coming weeks we'll introduce many of these meetings, speakers, workshops and events in individual posts.

Convention Hotel Booking Update – Please Read

We're looking forward to welcoming everyone to the 2026 Costa del Sol AA Convention, taking place 20th–22nd November 2026 in Fuengirola, Spain.

We wanted to share a quick update regarding hotel bookings.

This year, it appears that many attendees are booking their accommodation through mainstream booking websites rather than directly with the hotel using the convention discount code. This isn't a problem for the convention itself, but it does make it more difficult for us to estimate attendance and plan appropriately.

For that reason, we'd really appreciate it if everyone attending could pre-register for the convention. It only takes a minute and gives us a much clearer idea of numbers as we continue planning the weekend.

Have your double-booked?

The hotel has also advised us that around 10 bookings have been identified where guests appear to have booked twice- once through a booking website (such as Booking. com) and again directly with the hotel using the convention discount code AA2026.

If this might apply to you, please check your bookings as soon as possible. Resolving any duplicate reservations now will help avoid potential cancellation charges or unnecessary complications closer to the convention.

Living the Promises through Service

Service is one of AA's Three Legacies, alongside Recovery and Unity.

Yes, service keeps you coming back: it places you at the heart of your home group and the Fellowship. Yet there is something more. Through serving others, many of us discover a deeper sense of belonging, purpose, humility, and connection. The rewards often go far beyond the practical tasks of the service position itself.

As part of our Living the Promises theme for the 2026 Costa del Sol AA Convention, we will be sharing a series of posters highlighting the service positions found in many AA groups.

Our hope is to celebrate those already serving and encourage others to experience the rewards of service for themselves. We'd also love you to share how your own service position has helped your recovery.

Each post will include a link to the relevant AA guidance, outlining the role, responsibilities, and Traditions associated with that position.

Travelling to the Costa del Sol Convention

Several members have asked about travel arrangements for the convention, so we thought it would be helpful to share a few details.

Fuengirola is served by Málaga Airport, which has excellent connections throughout Europe and beyond. From the airport, the convention hotel can be reached by train, taxi, transfer, bus, or hire car.

The Results Are In – Thank You for Voting!

A huge thank you to everyone who took part in voting for the 2026 Costa del Sol Convention meeting themes!

The response has been fantastic, and your choices are now directly helping shape the convention programme built around the Promises and our 2026 theme:
“Living the Promises.”

The top seven voted themes will now be embedded into the main hall speaker programme, while the remaining themes will be integrated throughout the smaller “One Hour at a Time” marathon meetings across the weekend.

The convention programme will include:
• Main hall themed AA meetings inspired by the voting results
• Two Keynote Shares with Q&A from Tim M (London)
• YPAA Meeting
