Another memory from the "Speak Up" Erasmus+ Youth Exchange 🇪🇺, that took place in Seville few weeks ago.
During the exchange 30 young people from France, Italy, Latvia and Spain (but representing much more diverse places of origin, languages and cultural backgrounds) explored the topic of hate speech, exploring different perspectives, analysing specific situations and examples and learning what could be wrong and how to act or make it better.

Here you have a video created by some of our participants exploring their cultural diversity and some of the most popular stereotypes of our four countries (with a pinch of sun, smiles, fun and sense of humour) 🤗🌞

📢 Youth Exchange
▶️ Day 7

After starting the day with the usual energiser, led by the French team, the Spanish team presented its activity “Woman as Passive Agent of Hate Speech”. The focus was on how women are perceived in different areas of life and on all the prejudices and stereotypes that, unfortunately, we still witness today.

After the coffee break, first individually and then divided into groups, through the activity “Terminal Disease” we had to imagine a pandemic situation and choose who to save among different people based on age, gender, social condition, health status, and cause of infection. After this first part, we discovered further details about each of them, which led to exchanges of opinions and moments of discussion within the group.

After lunch, surrounded by the beauty of nature, we performed “Theatre of the Oppressed”. Once again divided into groups, we had to stage short acts based on six different themes related to economic and social inequalities. The special feature of the activity was that each of us could stop the performance and replace one of the characters in order to change the development of the scene and improve its ending.

Another full day exploring hate speech and how we behave in different situations in our lives.

📢 Youth Exchange
▶️ Day 6

Today was a very active and exciting day in our Erasmus+ project. In the morning, Latvia presented the topic “Art Against Hate Speech,” followed by interactive activities where we created posters and discussed the theme together. It was really interesting to hear different perspectives and express ideas creatively.

In the next session we worked in small teams on different practical situations that allowed it us to better understand the hate speech or discriminatory treatment that people with disabilities can suffer.

After that, we played a unique card game with 6 groups. Each group had different rules and had to play in complete silence, which made the game both challenging and fun. When someone won or lost, they moved to another group, so the dynamics were constantly changing. Through this activity we explored situations of privilege, inequality and the different behaviours when we move to a new country or receive someone new in our communities.

The afternoon ended with a simulation of the European Parliament where we were put in the position of different parliamentary groups and had to debate and vote on LGBTQ+ related policies at EU level.

In the evening, we enjoyed a cultural night hosted by Spain and France. They introduced their countries through traditional food, games, and songs, creating a fun and lively atmosphere for everyone.

📢 Youth Exchange
▶️ Day 05

We started the day with an energizer with the Latvians before continuing with the Italian team on hate speech and social media. Great discussions, reflections, and energy all around.

In the afternoon, we headed to Seville city center to do a visibility activity of the project, starting at the Torre del Oro. Then it was time for small team challenges. Some teams did the Paper Clip challenge (the concept was to start with a small, simple object and go out to meet the people of Seville to trade it for a more valuable object), using this opportunity to interact with people and raise awareness about Hate Speech and Erasmus+. Another team did an activity called Who is who?, talking with people around Seville in order to detect stereotypes and prejudices based on image and appearances.

We finished at Las Setas de Sevilla to debrief and share about our experiences, followed by a group photo to capture the moment. Then we enjoyed a free evening in the city.

📢 Youth Exchange
▶️ Day 4

Today we went to Maria Luisa Park and we took part in a Moving debate activity where we have to express our opinion about certain statements related to hate speech and then explain why in order to better understand different positions and discover better alternatives.

In the afternoon, the French team led us through a session including some acting to become more aware of some typical stereotypes and narratives.

Later, after the coffee break we had to choose three people we wanted to share a compartment with and three that not, this activity also challenged our own prejudices.

Finally, after dinner, the Italian and Latvian team delighted us with their own culture, traditions and food on the first intercultural evening.

📢 Youth Exchange
▶️ Day 3

🌄 We started the activities with energizers led by Team France. Afterwards, randomly drawing slips of paper, we had to role-play and build the story of the character we had picked. Through the questions we were asked, each of us took steps forward, which led us to end up in different positions from one another. At the end of the activity, everyone revealed their identity and, through the discussion, we understood that those who had moved far ahead were portraying someone with many more opportunities and less exposed to discrimination and stereotypes compared to those who had remained far behind.

💭 In the following two sessions, with lunch in between, we were divided into groups and asked to reflect on 12 sentences from different perspectives and understand how their meaning changed.

🙊 Afterwards, we listened to two presentations by Latvia and Spain about “Hate Speech in my country" and discussed the examples from both countries.

🌴🎏 After dinner, we attended the wonderful Palm Sunday procession, immersing in the local culture, and, in groups, we took part in a small treasure hunt that led us to discover Seville and continue building our international and intercultural team.

📢 Youth exchange
▶️ Day 2

🤗 Today was all about building connections and setting the foundation for the days ahead. We started by getting to know each other, creating a safe and open space for everyone.

🫂 Through the Program Q&A, we shared our expectations, fears, and formed our team alliance.

🇪🇺 We also learned more about Erasmus+, Youthpass, and sustainable practices, gaining a better understanding of the project’s impact.

🤸‍♀️ The day continued with energizing team-building activities that brought us closer together and strengthened our group spirit.

Stay tuned 👀
