When we talk about environmental crises, we rarely talk about the toxic impact of drug production and trafficking on cities, rivers and communities.

Maybe we should.

What if the real crisis is not only substance use — but the way society treats people afterwards?

Millions still avoid asking for help because they fear shame, exclusion and judgement.

Changing words can change outcomes. This should concern all of us.

Many people struggle silently not because support does not exist — but because stigma makes asking for help feel unsafe.

This 26 June, Dianova’s new global campaign will focus on a simple but urgent message:
People Need Support, Not Stigma.
Because isolation makes vulnerability worse.

👉 Stay tuned — and share with us: what helps people in your community feel understood instead of judged?

Last year, reminded us that behind every label is a human story.

But many people and families still face judgement before they receive understanding, care or support.

One month from now, on 26 June, Dianova will launch a new global campaign for the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

And this year, the conversation may challenge even more assumptions.

👉 What do you think people most need from society during vulnerable moments: judgement… or support?

👉 Before the 2026 conversation begins, revisit the voices that challenged stigma, silence and judgement last year https://www.dianova.org/campaigns/voices-without-stigma/ — and stay tuned for what comes next

People don’t only struggle with addiction.
They struggle with how society treats them.
Fear. Shame. Judgment.

These are still major barriers preventing people from seeking support for substance use and mental health challenges. Research shows stigma damages treatment outcomes, increases isolation and keeps people silent for longer.

Addiction is not solved through humiliation.
Recovery does not grow through exclusion.

If we want healthier communities, we need:
✔ evidence-based care
✔ compassionate language
✔ policies centred on people, not punishment

👉 Because nobody heals when they are treated as less human.

Many people seeking support are already exhausted before help even begins.

One service for mental health.
Another for addiction.
Another for housing.
Another for social support.

Retelling painful stories again and again can make people feel even more alone.

Integrated care is about something deeply human:
making support feel connected, compassionate and easier to navigate during vulnerable moments.

Many families notice the signs only when a young person is already struggling.

Withdrawal.
Anxiety.
Exhaustion.
Silence behind screens.

In this new article on the 17 May – World Internet Day, Matej Košir - Chairperson of the Vienna NGO Committee on Drugs (VNGOC) - reflects on why prevention must become more connected to the digital realities children and teenagers face every day.

Because support should not begin only after harm becomes visible.

On May 15 — International Day of Families, we want to focus on something essential:
- Young people are not only in need of support —
they understand deeply how that support works… and when it fails.

This article centres youth voices to explore how stigma shapes the way families are perceived and supported across systems.

The reality is clear:
1 in 5 young people grow up affected by parental substance use — increasing risks to their mental health and wellbeing.

But there is also a path forward.
When young people are truly heard, their lived experiences become:
- knowledge, leadership, and systems change.

Through the work of Starlings Community, and insights from Cassandra Banford, Youth Lead at Starlings’ Youth Council, "we see how stigma-free, prevention-oriented support can be built."

Cassandra concluded by referring that "We imagine a future where every youth can access resources, relationships, and support without fear or shame."

Many parents worry about what happens to children online.

Not only because of what they post — but because of what they silently carry afterwards.
Cyberbullying.
Social pressure.
Isolation.
Emotional exhaustion.

Digital prevention is not about controlling young people.
It’s about helping families and communities create safer spaces before harm escalates.

👉 On 17 May, we’ll explore why this conversation matters more than ever for families, schools and communities. Stay tuned.
