Wilderness Encounters: Hiking Retreat
📍 Spain | 18–23 October 2026

After a number of years offering this retreat in Scotland, we are now bringing it to our ministry location in Spain for the first time.

This is a week-long retreat combining guided mountain hiking with daily reflections shaped by the theme Wilderness Encounters — exploring how we meet with God in wild and spacious places.

The retreat is facilitated by certified spiritual directors and a trained mountain leader, offering a unique integration of spiritual direction, reflection, and safe mountain walking.

We anticipate a rich time of encounter in community and in nature.

THIS WEEK WITH PLACE OF SPRINGS: At the end of April, friends in Blockley organised a truly wonderful Quiz Night in support of Place of Springs. Playfully named Raise the Roof, the evening brought together over 100 people for a shared meal, a lively quiz, a raffle, and an auction—full of generosity, laughter, and community spirit.

This week, we’re delighted to share that an incredible £5,560 was raised!

The total cost of completing this project is approximately £11,000, so we’re now halfway there. We would love to match the amount raised in Blockley with further donations from friends and supporters across the UK.

THIS WEEK AT PLACE OF SPRINGS: Another debrief this week, this time with a francophone couple.
•
Did you know that a significant portion of North Africa, particularly the Maghreb region (Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia), is Francophone, with French serving as a primary language of commerce, education, and administration?
•
In any debrief, it’s impossible to know ahead of time what issues will be most present. Whether experiences of loss, conflict, transition or trauma, the power of offering a space to be heard is profound.
•
Do pray for this couple as they process - may they encounter help and healing during these days!

THIS WEEK AT PLACE OF SPRINGS: In a gap between guests, Tim is hard at work clearing some of the vast quantity of weeds that have sprung up in the sunshine following a period of rain.
•
Weeding is a great opportunity to reflect on the ways in which things so easily spring up in our own lives: it’s not just good things that grow, but also things that distract, that take much-needed resources from other things, excess growth that gets in the way of us seeing clearly what life is about.
•
Where is your own life in need of some weeding or clearing? Perhaps in this season of Lent you’ve already taken the opportunity to clear out some of what is unnecessary or distracting, in order to give more space to that which you desire to flourish even more?
•
A retreat, such as those offered at Place of Springs, can be a great opportunity to assess the level of weediness in the garden of your life. Taking time for this sort of work can help us to move with more intention into the season that’s ahead. If this is something that draws you, get in touch (and we promise, actual weeding in the garden is optional!).

PLACE OF SPRINGS THIS WEEK: Over the last several days there have been critical weather warnings over our part of Spain, with Storm Francis causing significant flooding of the Guadalhorce the Grande Rivers and their environs.
•
While some rainwater did enter the house around window and door frames, the Place of Springs property is not so much affected by water damage as it is by interruptions to the power supply.
•
Perhaps whenever you turn on your kettle to make a cup of tea or coffee, you could pray that power will be completely restored, that expensive appliances will not be adversely affected by the power outages, and that the property will hold up well to any further rainfall!
•
Pray too for the whole area, especially for those who have been evacuated from their homes or who have experienced damage to properties, vehicles and businesses.

PLACE OF SPRINGS MINISTRY THIS WEEK: Since we have a family from Libya staying in the house, the team debrief we are facilitating is taking place in on location in the UK.
•
For various reasons there are times when an entire ministry team takes the difficult decision to close the ministry. Things rarely go in the way we expect when we launch a new ministry and, at times, those unexpected events may mean the entire team feels redirected in other directions.
•
Such is the case for the small pioneering team we are debriefing this week. It means each team member has been thrust into major transition. Wisely they are seeking to bring their season of working together to a healthy place of closure by means of the debriefing process.
•
Pray for us as we facilitate this week. Pray especially that by unpacking the events of the past season, each team member will be able to move onto the next opportunity without being weighed down by the past but, rather, able to freely and wholeheartedly embrace what lies ahead!

In places where Christians have been a small minority, there is now a harvest happening. It’s not happening through big names or famous leaders – much of this harvest is happening through faithful women. Women like Mariam.

LAST WEEK WITH PLACE OF SPRINGS: It’s been a busy time for debriefing! Last week’s privilege was to work with a missionary located in Lebanon as she unpacked the last 4 years.
•
Loss and grief are a normal part of our journey, whatever our occupation. In some parts of the world, loss and grief take a certain shape. But everywhere people working with people have to face, navigate and recover from experiences of when those relationships get messy.
•
In the midst of the messiness, we can discover that God is for us, that loving kindness is being offered to us even in the places where we messed up. How would we live differently if we truly believed that God wants to show us kindness? How might that conviction change the way we show up for others?
•
Debriefing can be more than a processing tool, it can be a significant part of our Christian formation as we open to the ways we are being shaped in the midst of our challenging experiences.
•
