🩸 BLOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month — an opportunity to raise awareness of blood cancers and the signs and symptoms that shouldn’t be ignored.

Blood cancers include leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and they can affect people of all ages.

⚠️ Symptoms to be aware of
Symptoms can vary depending on the type of blood cancer, but may include:
• Unexplained or persistent tiredness
• Frequent infections or infections that keep coming back
• Unexplained bruising or bleeding
• Unexplained weight loss
• Persistent fever or night sweats
• Swollen or painless lymph nodes
• Bone or joint pain
• Shortness of breath
• Pale skin
• Persistent or unusual itching
• Abdominal swelling or discomfort

Having one or more of these symptoms does not mean you have blood cancer — many can have other causes. But if something is unusual, persistent or worrying you, it’s important to speak to your doctor.

This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, let’s help spread the word, encourage people to listen to their bodies and make sure they know where to turn for support.

💙 Know the signs. Listen to your body. Don’t ignore persistent symptoms.

💙 July & August in Review 💙

As the summer draws to a close, we'd like to take a moment to reflect on the difference our volunteers, supporters and donors have made over the past two months.

During July and August, our dedicated team has continued to provide practical and emotional support to people affected by cancer across Mallorca.

While many people have been enjoying a well-earned summer break, our volunteers have remained on hand to ensure that no one has to face cancer alone.

Together, we have:
💙 Supported 37 patients and their families
🚗 Completed 36 volunteer tasks, including transport, home visits and translations
🏥 Staffed our hospital drop-in centres with the help of 6 volunteers
🤝 Delivered emotional support through our Need to Talk Programme
🌿 Continued to offer wellbeing activities and nutritional guidance with the support of local professionals

Behind every number is a person who received a lift to treatment, someone who better understood their medical appointment, a family who felt supported, or a patient who simply needed someone to listen.

To our volunteers, fundraisers, donors and everyone who supports Cancer Support Mallorca—thank you. Your kindness and generosity allow us to continue providing these essential services to those who need them most.

Together, we are making a difference, one person at a time. 💙

💙 July Volunteer Training Recap 💙

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our July volunteer training session. It was wonderful to see our volunteers come together to continue developing the knowledge and skills that help us provide the very best support to our patients and their families.

This month's training was led by Glynis German, who shared her knowledge and experience on supporting patients at the end of life. It was a thoughtful and insightful session, exploring how we can offer compassionate, person-centred support during one of life's most difficult stages.

As volunteers, we know that sometimes the greatest gift we can give is our presence—listening without judgement, respecting each person's wishes, and ensuring they feel supported, valued and never alone.

We are incredibly grateful to Glynis for giving her time and expertise, and to every volunteer who continues to invest in their learning. Ongoing training is an essential part of the support we provide and helps ensure our volunteers feel confident and prepared for the many situations they may encounter.

💙 Together, we're building a team of compassionate, knowledgeable volunteers who are there when people need us most.

2️⃣ EATING WELL DURING CANCER 🍎🥕

Recommendations from Suzanne Garaty, our Specialised Nutritionist.

Good nutrition can be especially important when you are living with cancer or recovering from treatment.

Rather than focusing on restrictive diets or the latest health trend, try to build meals around a variety of nutritious, minimally processed foods.

🥕 Seasonal, fresh and minimally processed foods
🏠 Home-cooked meals where possible
🌈 A wide variety of colourful foods
🥚 Good sources of protein
🥑 Healthy fats
🌾 Fibre-rich foods
💧 Plenty of water

And don't forget that food should also be enjoyed!
Try to eat in a relaxed environment, take your time and enjoy your meals rather than seeing food simply as fuel or another health "hack".

Your nutritional needs can change during cancer treatment, so individual advice is important.
These are general recommendations and may not be suitable for everyone. Speak to your doctor or oncologist or a qualified nutrition professional for personalised advice.

💙 Your Kind Words Mean the World to Us 💙

There is no greater reward than knowing we've been able to make a difference to someone during one of the most difficult times in their life.

We're incredibly grateful to one of our patients for sharing these kind words:

"This group does an incredibly important job, in a completely voluntary way. I have received help in the hospital and help with the translation of treatments. They have called the hospitals and doctors have contacted them. They are knowledgeable and know how to talk to hospital staff. I do not know how I would have managed all my problems without Cancer Support Mallorca."

Reviews like this remind us why we do what we do.
A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers, who give their time, compassion and expertise to support patients every single day. Whether it's providing translation support, transport, emotional support, practical guidance or simply being there to listen, every act of kindness makes a difference.

💙 To our patient, thank you for trusting us and for taking the time to share your experience. Your words mean more than you know.

💙 Could You Make a Difference? Volunteer with Cancer Support Mallorca 💙

Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do, providing practical and emotional support to people affected by cancer across Mallorca and Menorca.

At the moment, we're particularly looking for volunteers who can help with:

🚗 Transport – driving patients to and from hospital and medical appointments.

🏡 Home Visits – offering companionship and a friendly face to patients who may be feeling isolated.

🤝 Need to Talk Buddies – providing emotional support by listening, encouraging and simply being there for someone during a difficult time. Full training and ongoing support are provided.

There are many other ways to get involved too. Whether you'd like to help at fundraising events, support our hospital drop-in centres, use your professional skills, or volunteer in another capacity, we'd love to hear from you.

You don't need any previous experience—just compassion, reliability, and a willingness to help others. Whatever time you can give, you'll be making a real difference to someone facing cancer.

💙 Every volunteer brings something unique, and together we help ensure that no one has to face cancer alone.

If you've been thinking about volunteering, now is the perfect time to get in touch and find out more.
