U3A Local interest: Cherry Festival in CERET

Every year in May, Céret, a charming Catalan town (in France) celebrates their Cherry Festival where agricultural traditions rub shoulders with the explosive joy of brass bands in their own festival – the ‘Céret de Bandas’

It is a vibrant Catalan celebration featuring cherry-themed markets, musical bands, and street musicians, traditions like the cherry pit-spitting contest and local tastings of cherry wine, beer and pastries. When people talk about Céret, cherries inevitably come up! It’s the first town in France to harvest cherries each year, usually by mid-May. This early ripening has become a source of local pride. Every year, the first fruits are sent to the Élysée Palace, a tradition dating back to the 1930s.

Many thanks to Barbara for organising this beautiful trip

U3A Bravas Walk
13/6/2026

Last Wednesday, after a few days of anxiously checking decidedly dodgy weather forecasts, a group comprising 22 members and guests gathered in Rupià in almost ideal walking weather. Many people had driven past the road leading into the village dozens of times but most had never actually visited the historical centre which retains the feel of having stepped back in time. After wandering the charming narrow streets, they struck out into the countryside via one of the mediaeval gates and onto a lane which runs alongside a babbling brook. The recent rain has made the vegetation very lush with Spring flowers very much in evidence. The route took them through wheat fields, woodland and winding semi-overgrown tracks before ascending the hill of Puig Redó. Here there was time for a rest and a snack, taking advantage of the stone benches and huge volcanic stone slab to use as a table! The second part of the walk took in the Senglars’ pond, named for the fact that wild boar used to use it as a watering and bathing hole. Parts of the return path were fairly steep and narrow, but the walkers literally took these sections in their stride. The final stretch passed by an old Masia with its millennial olive tree. Ancient as it is, there is still evidence of new growth sprouting.
The walk finished with lunch at the nearby Merakis Greek restaurant where there was a choice between a reasonably priced Menú del Día or a typical Gryros meat wrap. All in all, a very varied, interesting and pleasant walk.

Thanks to Karin and Jürgen for planning and leading this walk.

Trip Report - Sant Grau Megalithic Route

On Thursday 7 May 2026, ten brave souls set off from the Sanctuari de Sant Grau, near Llagostera, on a walk through the Cadiretes massif to explore some of prehistoric sites of Catalonia. The weather gods were kind and blue skies and moderate temperatures were the order of the day. Starting downhill along the sandy forest roads bordered by oaks and wildflowers, with glimpses of the sea, past the commemorative wooden cross, we came to the ruins of the Chapel of Mare de Deu de Gracia. The ruins were adorned with votives (“exvots” in Catalan) to remember lost ones or to ask for divine help, some elaborate and some more rustic. This marked the point of starting back uphill, with the strain being offset with the vistas of the coast and Tossa de Mar in the distance. In the upper forest the granite boulders started to appear among the trees and, with them, the Stone Age megaliths. The menhirs de Montllor and d’en Llach, the paradolmen d’en Garcia, ‘Pedra sobre altra’ all spoke of those early humans (5,000 – 2,500 BC) living in the area and erecting monuments to past leaders or key family members. The highest point was reached at Puig de ses Cadiretes (518m). Members regained some of their youth to scramble up the granite slabs so as to reach the peak and look out over the West-facing panorama that reached from Lloret in the South, over the plains with Llagostera and Cassa de la Selva up to the hills around Sant Feliu de Guixols and Platja d’Aro in the North. Unfortunately, the haze kept the Pyrenees out of view on the horizon. Packed lunches were consumed in the shade before the short stretch back to the cars at Sant Grau for refreshments and a slice (or two) of carrot cake.

Wine Appreciation Group (WAGs) Event
Thursday 30th April 2026 – Clos de Basella Vineyard

14 WAGs members experienced a wonderful visit to a gem of a winery just south of Figueres in Suirana; the tour included not only a tasting of five of their high quality wines but also locally produced produce including a range of cheeses, salami, and olive oil.
Clos de Basella is an organic winery that believes in sustainability
and environmentally friendly viticulture. Since 2002, the winery has been a project that aims to unite vineyard, garden, whilst retaining respect for natural rhythms and the land. In 2024, the Parés and Grau family took over the vineyard with the aim of preserving its essence, renewing the connection with the territory and the Empordà region, thus creating a vineyard that has a clear and unique identity.
The Empordà is much more than a landscape: it a cauldron of land, wind, and sea that combine to define a unique character in the wine of this region. Nestled between the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava, the wine made by Clos de Basella benefit from the Tramuntana wind, the clear and intense sunlight, and the sea breeze which all give life to an environment that inspires and leaves its mark on the grapes.
With a winemaking tradition that dates back to the Greek civilization of Empúries, Clos de Basella winery in Siurana d'Empordà draws on this ancestral heritage to produce signature wines, which are organic and true to the authenticity and character of the territory.
Clos de Basella offers a variety of wines, each with unique characteristics. The youngest offerings include C Red and C White which are their everyday drinking wines. Other notable selections are the Geum (2023) red which was recently given a Girona Excellent Award, a brised Gris, full of red fruit and freshness along with their signature wine, a 100% viogner wine called Janus (after the Roman God) which has a remarkably complex and creamy taste.
The winery's commitment to sustainability is evident through its pioneering work on introducing various plants as natural insecticides throughout the vines.
Our group was shown how the wine was made and stored in
vats before a bottle machine is brought in to then distribute the wine to local restaurants and businesses. Aro9und 50,000 litres are made every year but the wine is not available in shops or online…you have to go to the vineyard to buy it.
And, of course, we enjoyed the wine along with an extremely tasty lunch of the vineyard’s own produce. Everyone agreed that this was a real find of a vineyard, not widely known, but of a very high standard, offering something that little bit different.
This was a wonderful day out, in a beautiful part of the Costa Brava where our small band of WAGs members got the chance to experience outstanding food and wine for a very affordable group price. The ability to book great venues like this at reasonable prices depends on the continued support of WAGs events throughout the year… so I look forward to welcoming more members at our next outing (probably in June).
The Wine Appreciation Group (WAGs) aims to give its members a diverse experience of the various wineries and wine centres in Catalonia… whether they be one-man or family businesses, long-established brands like Perelada or wine centres like Grau in Palafrugell. Some trips will be adventurous, some more relaxed, but the aim is always to understand the story behind the wine and what makes it unique. Where else can you enjoy such a delightful environment to learn about your favourite tipple? If you want to join in the fun, you know how to join! See you at the next trip!

29/4/2026

Twenty members enjoyed a special Taster Menu today.
Students and staff at the Palafrugell Cookery School served up small delicate courses. Imaginative combinations of ingredients and fine presentation impressed us. After the cocktail of gin, triple sec, prosecco and violet tinged syrup we were wowed by the variety of courses. Fish and seafood were carefully presented. Surprise ingredients such as the beetroot sorbet impressed us all. Served with salmorejo. Three types of bread rolls were freshly made and delicious.

Good wines were served to match the types of dishes. We finished with a rose cava and a dessert wine. Coffee and petit fours were served at the end. Everything was made and served by the students.

We were seated at three tables. So we had a chance to get to know different people. Hopefully we will get some suggestions for future events that include actual cooking. Who knows, having a chance to experience 8 special plates might inspire us. The menu for today is on the website.

If members would like to include this type of restaurant event there are similar schools in Figueres and Girona that we can explore.
