Moving Artists
Moving Artists (MA) is an independent, artist-run non-profit based in Bilbao, Spain. Working at the intersection of human rights and the arts, MA is dedicated to facilitating mobility and cultural exchange between countries that have restricted access to one another. In particular, MA seeks to enable movement and transnational exchange for cultural workers whose practice is threatened by situations of conflict, crisis, instability or censorship. Art, as a powerful tool for communication, cultural development and social critique is often threatened, particularly in zones of unrest and political upheaval. We, therefore, place contemporary artists at the centre of our programs. Prolonged war conflicts, humanitarian crisis and repressive States often lead to closed borders and cultural isolation, thus conditioning cultural production within affected regions and distorting cultural perceptions externally. By opening and sustaining channels of movement and mutual interaction in an out zones of conflict, MA seeks to create vibrant and novel sites for artistic production and interlocution—shared spaces of curiosity, collaboration, critical emancipatory thought and education. MA’s current initiatives are short-term residency programs in Spain, Iraq and Palestine in which artists are provided with logistical, conceptual, and financial support to develop their practice and cultivate forms of inquiry and interlocution. Through partnerships with various cultural institutions – such as BilbaoArte Foundation and the University of the Basque Country (Spain); Metrography and To***co Factory (Iraq); M.A. Qattan (Palestine)- MA creates platforms for mutual learning in light of diverse realities, encouraging residents to think in dialogue and collaboration with local communities. Beyond our current residency programs, MA continually looks for new ways to foster the movement of cultural workers across political and ideological borders—both away from and towards conflict and post-conflict scenarios. In our increasingly complex and conflictive global community, the protection, recognition and reciprocal sharing of a diversity of living arts is essential to positive social transformations.
Principles and basis of our work: 1. We work wilfully to sustain and cultivate contemporary artistic practice in zones of conflict as we recognize it is an intangible cultural heritage under threat that must be protected. 2. We work against cultural isolation, discrimination and repression. In this framework, we advocate for the mobility of artists by way of programs that pursue reciprocal exchanges across national, cultural, political and social barriers. 3. We explore forms of immersion, coexistence and communication that contribute to the creation of heterogenous, informed and thoughtful artistic communities, paving the way for the production of alternate forms of knowledge and critical thought. 4. We defend and uphold freedom of expression and independent and emancipated artistic practice. 5. We strive for social justice and contest cultural policies imposed by coercive or repressive States. 6. We favour the development and ex*****on of artistic works as well as their dissemination through diverse and interdisciplinary platforms. 7. We seek reciprocity, resonances and fruitful impact in sites of origin and immersion. 8. We think and work towards solid and long term collaborations that are shaped through iteration and the sustainability of exchanges over time.
