BANYOLES

Banyoles could be defined as a water city with medieval origins. The history and life of this municipality has always centred around its lake, which, although an outstanding natural phenomenon, is not the only jewel in this city’s crown. The lake’s influence extends beyond the twenty fisheries that surround it, the Neolithic site of La Draga and the Estunes forest to buildings of great historic value, such as the monastery of Sant Esteve, the church of Santa Maria dels Turers, the Llotja del Tint, the Pia Almoina, the Gothic-style wall and the thirteenth century Plaça Major, which combine to make it one of the most unique and desirable cities to live in in Catalonia.

CBSEC & CBSLEC members, friends and families spent a moment as side trip during their VIAJE 2026 to Besalú. Time well spent indeed!

Besalú is historically and geographically defined by two rivers: the Fluvià to the south and the Capellades to the north. Situated on a rocky hill at their confluence, the town's name derives from the Latin Bisuldunum, reflecting its role as a fortress between these two watercourses.

A significant starting point for your visit is the bridge that crosses the Fluvià River. It is a majestic stone bridge with eight arches. Built in the Romanesque style in the 12th – 14th centuries, it provided access to the fortifications of the county villa. It is classified as a national cultural heritage.

An impressive fortified bridge leads into Besalú, one of the best-preserved medieval complexes in Catalonia, where Iberians, Romans, Jews, and Christians have all left their mark.

Crossed by the Fluvià River , the town is a crossroads of different communication routes between Girona and France, and has always been a meeting point for farmers, artisans, merchants, and traders.

Today it is an attractive town that retains its medieval personality and appearance, with a historic center of great interest. Among its architectural attractions, besides the characteristic Pont Vell (11th century), are the churches of Sant Vicenç (10th-12th centuries) and Santa Maria (11th century), the church of the former monastery of Sant Pere (12th century), and the micvé or ritual bathhouse .

Traditional festivals are also well represented, such as the procession of the Sorrows or Manaies and the medieval fair .

The ancient bridge the Pont Vell, with seven arches and a tower, leads into Besalú, one of the most significant and best preserved medieval sites in Catalonia. Strolling through the streets of this town in the Garrotxa region is like going back to the time of counts and kings. Sant Julià and Sant Vicenç Churches, Sant Pere Monastery and the Jewish baths are examples of the cultural and historic heritage found in this town. If you would like to find out about this town in depth, please consult the programmed activities: guided tours, themed fairs and markets, gastronomic campaigns and many other proposals that are as unique as the town of Besalú itself.

CBSEC & CBSLEC are joined by friends and families in their first trip for the year to Besalú, a medieval town in Girona, Catalunya.

Besalú, in the province of Girona, is a monumental example of the Catalan Middle Ages.

Located in the region of La Garrotxa, the town is only steps away from the spectacular scenery of the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa Nature Reserve, on the last spurs of the eastern section of the Pyrenees of Girona.
Cobbled streets and façades are the most distinguishable feature of the city centre, as can be seen in many spots. The rich medieval legacy brings the visitor closer to both religious and civil constructions, and to the vestiges of a Sephardic quarter that used to exist in this town during the Middle Ages. Civil architecture works include the 12th-century Romanesque bridge that crosses the Fluvià river; the building of Cùria Real, devoted to law enforcement; and the residence of Cornellà, with a great Romanesque arcaded gallery. Among religious monuments, we must point out the churches of Sant Pere, Santa María, and Sant Vicenç, alternating Romanesque and Gothic elements. Also worthy of note is the lavish ornamentation of the church of Sant Julià (17th century). In addition, in the Jewish quarter we can visit medieval public baths that were devoted to Hebrew ritual ablutions.
