🌍 || Circle the Med (Athens, 19–21 May)
Last week, MedWaves took part in the 9th edition of Circle the Med – The Mediterranean Forum in Athens, one of the region’s leading platforms for advancing the green transition, climate resilience, and circular economy cooperation across the Mediterranean. Over the course of three days, the Forum brought together policymakers, researchers, innovators, civil society organisations, and private sector representatives to exchange knowledge and foster dialogue on pathways towards a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive Mediterranean future.
As part of the programme:
🔷 On Day 1 our Director, Roger Garcia i Noguera, participated as a speaker in the Panel “Financing the Pact: Mobilising Sustainable Investment and Enabling a Circular Economy for a Just Transition and a Resilient Mediterranean”, where he reflected on the importance of ensuring a socially just and inclusive green transition, drawing on MedWaves’ recent policy work.
Key takeaways from the discussion included:
◾ Advancing the green transition requires long-term cooperation and collective action, ensuring that all relevant stakeholders are actively involved in shaping the transition process.
◾ A sustainable transition must also be a just transition, taking into account the social, economic, and environmental dimensions at stake, as well as who benefits from the transition and who may be disproportionately affected by its impacts.
◾ Mobilising venture capital and private investment remains essential to accelerating sustainability-driven innovation and scaling up circular economy solutions.
🔷 Alessandro Miraglia, Networking, Partnership & Communication Facility Team Leader, moderated on Day 2 Panel III of the Med Innovation Camp, “Economies of Regeneration: Redesigning Growth for a Sustainable Future”, exploring how regenerative, circular and low-carbon business innovation and collaboration can redefine value and scale sustainable solutions for resilient regional economies.
🔷 Sarai MATILLAS, Project Manager for the C4I and D4I Projects under the Innovative Sustainable Economy Mission (Interreg Euro-MED Programme), participated on Day 3 in the 5th Community of Practice of the C4I and coordinated the 5th Thematic Working Group on Industrial Transition, contributing to discussions on systemic transformation and sustainable industrial pathways across the region. During that day we could also hear from Olga Batran, B-Hub - Birzeit University | جامعة بيرزيت, our partner in Palestine,
within the framework of the C4I Mentoring/Twinning Programme.
👏 Thanks to the organisers and all participants for the inspiring discussions and continued commitment towards a more circular and sustainable Mediterranean. Ευχαριστώ πολύ to the hosts Dynamic Vision PC. and MIO-ESCDE.
