🌍 || Circle the Med (Athens, 19–21 May)

Last week, MedWaves took part in the 9th edition of Circle the Med – The Mediterranean Forum in Athens, one of the region’s leading platforms for advancing the green transition, climate resilience, and circular economy cooperation across the Mediterranean. Over the course of three days, the Forum brought together policymakers, researchers, innovators, civil society organisations, and private sector representatives to exchange knowledge and foster dialogue on pathways towards a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive Mediterranean future.

As part of the programme:

🔷 On Day 1 our Director, Roger Garcia i Noguera, participated as a speaker in the Panel “Financing the Pact: Mobilising Sustainable Investment and Enabling a Circular Economy for a Just Transition and a Resilient Mediterranean”, where he reflected on the importance of ensuring a socially just and inclusive green transition, drawing on MedWaves’ recent policy work.
Key takeaways from the discussion included:
◾ Advancing the green transition requires long-term cooperation and collective action, ensuring that all relevant stakeholders are actively involved in shaping the transition process.
◾ A sustainable transition must also be a just transition, taking into account the social, economic, and environmental dimensions at stake, as well as who benefits from the transition and who may be disproportionately affected by its impacts.
◾ Mobilising venture capital and private investment remains essential to accelerating sustainability-driven innovation and scaling up circular economy solutions.

🔷 Alessandro Miraglia, Networking, Partnership & Communication Facility Team Leader, moderated on Day 2 Panel III of the Med Innovation Camp, “Economies of Regeneration: Redesigning Growth for a Sustainable Future”, exploring how regenerative, circular and low-carbon business innovation and collaboration can redefine value and scale sustainable solutions for resilient regional economies.

🔷 Sarai MATILLAS, Project Manager for the C4I and D4I Projects under the Innovative Sustainable Economy Mission (Interreg Euro-MED Programme), participated on Day 3 in the 5th Community of Practice of the C4I and coordinated the 5th Thematic Working Group on Industrial Transition, contributing to discussions on systemic transformation and sustainable industrial pathways across the region. During that day we could also hear from Olga Batran, B-Hub - Birzeit University | جامعة بيرزيت, our partner in Palestine,
within the framework of the C4I Mentoring/Twinning Programme.

👏 Thanks to the organisers and all participants for the inspiring discussions and continued commitment towards a more circular and sustainable Mediterranean. Ευχαριστώ πολύ to the hosts Dynamic Vision PC. and MIO-ESCDE.

🔙 A look back at

Last week, MedWaves proudly participated as an official partner of Impact Now 2026, held at Dar Lasram (Tunisia), a regional event dedicated to advancing impact investing, social innovation, and ecosystem collaboration across the MENA region and Africa.

Bringing together investors, entrepreneurs, ecosystem builders, development organisations, corporates, and policymakers, the event created a valuable space for strategic dialogue around sustainable growth, inclusive innovation, and the future of impact-driven economies.

Hosted by Impact Partner and Europe, Impact Now 2026 explored key topics shaping emerging ecosystems, including impact investing, blended finance, climate innovation, women entrepreneurship, and cross-border collaboration.

Over two inspiring days, our colleagues Alessandro Miraglia (Networking, Partnerships and Communications Team Lead) and Nayara Naranjo (Impact Investment Manager) engaged in discussions, networking opportunities, and collaborative exchanges with actors committed to driving sustainable and inclusive development across the region.

📌 MedWaves contributed to:
🔷 The discussion “Is Climate Investing a Priority in Emerging Markets, or a Luxury?”, explores the balance between immediate development needs and long-term climate investment strategies.
🔷 The “Female Investors Breakfast” is a networking session bringing together women leaders from the impact investing ecosystem.

A big thank you to Impact Partner and all partners and participants for creating this important platform for dialogue, partnerships, and regional cooperation.

🌍 This week, MedWaves is in Athens actively participating in Circle the Med, a flagship annual event and community platform dedicated to advancing the green transition, climate neutrality, and environmental resilience across the Mediterranean region.

With the concept of a Just Transition featuring prominently throughout the discussions, we invite you to explore the topic through our latest policy paper "Weaving a Just Transition to Circular Economy through territorial cooperation" developed within the Interreg Euro-MED Programme Innovative Sustainable Economy Mission.

📘 The paper explores how circular economy policies can better support a fairer, more inclusive, and territorially balanced transition across the Mediterranean.

These innovators are leading the way in circularity, decarbonization, and more sustainable practices within the textile sector.

🌱 We’re excited to support these projects as they assess and strengthen their sustainability and circularity performance through tailored tools, practical resources, and one-to-one mentoring designed to keep their progress on track.

🔜 Stay tuned as we continue showcasing the next group of GoZero participants shaping a more sustainable future for the Mediterranean textile ecosystem.

A new policy paper co-developed by MedWaves within the Interreg Euro-MED Programme Innovative Sustainable Economy Mission explores how circular economy policies can better support a fairer, more inclusive and territorially balanced transition across the Mediterranean.

The paper analyses eight projects from the ISE Mission through the lens of Just Transition principles. While many of the projects were not initially framed around the concept of “Just Transition”, the study reveals how several are already applying these principles in practice through their activities and approaches.

The publication highlights key lessons, challenges and opportunities for integrating social equity into circular economy policymaking and implementation.

📅 SAVE THE DATE 📅

The Circle the MED Forum returns to Athens on 19–21 May 2026, bringing together policymakers, innovators, businesses, researchers and civil society from across the region. Under the theme “A New Pact for a Sustainable Mediterranean Future”, the Forum will promote dialogue on the European Green Deal, cooperation and circular, inclusive economic models.

The Innovative Sustainable Economy Mission will also host the 3rd MED Innovation Summit and the 5th ISE Community of Practice (CoP), with the active participation of MedWaves.

🔎 Days 2 and 3 of the forum will highlight the work of the ISE Mission, exploring how innovation can move beyond pilot actions and examining how solutions in marine resources, agri-food systems, industrial transition and resource valorisation can be transferred, adapted and scaled across diverse Mediterranean territories.

🌊 About last week || MedWaves took part in the 2nd Steering Committee Meeting of the EU-funded Marine Litter MED PLUS project, held on 29–30 April in Athens, a project aiming to reduce and prevent the generation of marine litter in the Mediterranean Sea through an expanded implementation of key reduction and prevention measures as provided for in the updated Regional Plan on Marine Litter Management in the Mediterranean.

Over two days, our colleagues Matías Ibáñez Sales, Coordinator of Operations, and Laura Bordera Iniesta, Project Manager, joined national representatives from across the Mediterranean, together with key partners and other implementing organisations.

The meeting marked an important milestone in the project’s annual governance cycle, providing a space to review progress achieved during the second year of implementation and to align on priorities for the next phase. Within this framework, MedWaves presented the activities implemented to date in Tunisia, Morocco, and Lebanon, along with projections for 2026.
