Research & Degrowth, (R&D) is an academic association dedicated to research, awareness raising, and events organization around the topic of degrowth.

Think-and-act-tank dedicated to the radical transformation of our economies & societies through research, advocacy, education, training & events around degrowth R&D defines degrowth as a multi-level voluntary path towards reduction of production and consumption aiming at ecological sustainability, good life, liberty, and social justice. For R&D, degrowth is grounded in ecology, ecological economics, anthropology, psychology, and social sciences in general. In the degrowth process, R&D is concerned with democracy, international cooperation, and understanding as opposed to societal closure, fragmentation and authoritarianism. R&D strives to bring scientists, civil society, practitioners, and activists together to think, imagine, discuss, and create proposals for sustainable degrowth. R&D supports and aims to maintain a diversity of degrowth strategies for achieving social equity and ecological sustainability, including:

*grass-roots action and institutional interventions;

*academic and practical work;

*building of alternatives and opposition to environmentally and socially destructive projects and policies;

*local and international level work. At present R&D conducts the majority of its local activities in Spain and France, while organizing and co-organizing international events in various parts of Europe and beyond. R&D has presently about fifteen active members based in Barcelona and France. It has created an informal network with members in more than 60 countries.

Es pot considerar un èxit econòmic una ciutat on augmenten l’activitat i el valor immobiliari mentre les persones que la sostenen són expulsades dels seus barris?

Mentre l’economia creix, els preus d’habitatge s’allunyen cada dia més del que un salari mitjà pot pagar.

La qüestió de fons és, no quant creix un país, sinó per a qui creix, qui hi pot viure i quin tipus de comunitat volem construir.

Fem una crida a estudiants, treballadorxs, sindicats, col•lectius d’habitatge, associacions, moviments socials i comunitats universitàries a trobar-se, organitzar-se i construir juntes les condicions per a una transformació ecosocial i decreixentista.

Per uns territoris al servei de la vida, no del creixement econòmic.

What if the question isn’t how to keep growing, but what we are actually growing?

Last Thursday at Nest City Lab in Barcelona, ICTA-UAB 👩‍🔬🌍📉 Aljoša Slameršak (ICTA-UAB, The REAL Project) was hosted by the Red de Profesionales de Sostenibilidad to discuss his research published in Nature Climate Change and the challenge of imagining high-wellbeing futures without perpetual GDP growth.

Only around 30% of the energy consumed globally is used to meet basic human needs. The rest sustains forms of production and consumption that do not necessarily translate into greater wellbeing.

So what would a post-growth economy actually look like? Degrowth is not simply about producing less. It is about reorganising what we produce, for whom, and how much is enough - moving from the critique of growth towards concrete post-growth scenarios.

¿Y si la pregunta no fuera cómo seguir creciendo, sino qué estamos haciendo crecer?

El pasado jueves, en Nest City Lab de Barcelona, exploramos esta pregunta junto a Aljoša Slameršak (ICTA-UAB), a partir de su investigación publicada en Nature Climate Change y del reto de imaginar escenarios de alto bienestar sin depender del crecimiento perpetuo del PIB.

Solo alrededor del 30 % de la energía que consume el mundo se utiliza para cubrir necesidades humanas básicas. El resto sostiene formas de producción y consumo que no necesariamente se traducen en mayor bienestar.

Entonces, ¿cómo sería realmente una economía post-crecimiento?

El decrecimiento no consiste simplemente en producir menos. Consiste en reorganizar qué producimos, para quién y cuánto es suficiente, pasando de la crítica al crecimiento a la construcción de escenarios concretos de post-crecimiento.
