🎉B.RIGHT SPACES CONFERENCE SOON!

We invite you to take part in the B.RIGHT SPACES Conference, dedicated to civic spaces and their role in building and strengthening democracy in Europe!!!

⭐️During the event, we will explore the current situation of civic spaces in selected European countries (Spain, Italy, Poland and Portugal), identifying both the challenges and opportunities faced by local communities, public institutions and civil society organisations.
🌟The conference will also provide an opportunity to present good practices developed and mapped during the two-year international B.RIGHT SPACES project. Participants will learn about concrete solutions that support participation, inclusiveness and the right to the city.

🟣 We are delighted to present the program for the upcoming meeting on THE CHARTER FOR THE DEFENDERS OF CIVIC SPACES – B.RIGHT SPACES❗️

🔴 On December 3, from 12-3 p.m. at the Region of Västra Götaland Brussels Office (Rue du Luxembourg 3), you will have the opportunity to hear the contents of the prepared document, take part in an open discussion, and listen to testimonials from people who participated in the project. We warmly invite you to participate!

🔵 MORE ABOUT THE CHARTER:
The Charter is addressed to different actors committed to the protection and promotion of civic spaces at the local and regional levels. It speaks directly to Local and Regional Public Institutions, actors from the Social and Solidarity Economy, academic institutions, independent research and advisory centres, and other non-profit organisations. Together, these stakeholders act as the primary “defenders” of civic spaces, providing the essential conditions, tools and resources needed to nurture robust, inclusive and participatory environments. [...] The Charter emphasises that effective civic spaces rely on more than infrastructure or service delivery alone. They inherently depend on trust, the development of social and relational capital, as well as on inclusive shared governance.

🟢 Cascina Roccafranca is a multifunctional socio-cultural center located in the Mirafiori Nord neighborhood of Turin. It is aimed to regenerate degraded urban areas through integrated environmental, social, and economic redevelopment interventions. The project transformed a 17th-century historic farmhouse, previously abandoned, into a 2.500 m² space dedicated to community gatherings, participation, and the promotion of cultural and social activities.

🔴 The Portineria di Comunità in Porta Palazzo, Turin, is a community-driven initiative that began in 2020. Located in a repurposed newsstand in Piazza della Repubblica, within the biggest outdoor market in Europe, it serves as a low-threshold, multifunctional space offering various services to residents. The Portineria di Comunità aims to strengthen local relationships by creating a space where residents can both seek and offer help. It promotes a sense of belonging and solidarity, contributing to a more cohesive community.

🔵 The Pellegrino Garden Collaboration Pact is a shared management agreement signed in January 2022 between the City of Turin and the Porta Palazzo Community Foundation, later joined by other Third-Sector organizations.
It aims to return a neglected public space to the community through the care of the common good, the organization of cultural and artistic events, and the promotion of social inclusion. The green area is cared for and managed by the community.

We began our study visit in Torino! 🩷
We have three exciting days ahead of us filled with meetings with experts involved in civic spaces in the city.🌞

Some information about spaces we had visited already 🥰

🔴The Casa del Quartiere di San Salvario is a laboratory for the design and implementation of social and cultural activities, involving
associations, citizens, and artistic and cultural operators. It is an open and multicultural space, a place of intersection, encounter, and exchange of activities and people.

🟢Orti Generali is a community urban gardening project located in the Mirafiori Sud neighborhood, a historic working-class district of Turin, within Parco Piemonte. The initiative was launched in 2010 through a participatory process involving citizens, associations, and local organizations. The space features individual plots, family gardens and “solidarity gardens” for those with limited resources. In addition to the gardens, there are shared spaces, including an educational farm, a pasture with various animals (e.g., Highland cattle), communal green areas, a large kiosk, as well as workshops, courses, and cultural, social, and educational activities. Orti Generali has become a place of social life, community building, and encounters among people — not just a site for cultivation.

The digital and democratic participation platform Decidim.Barcelona wants to give citizens a voice so that they can decide on the future of their environment. It is a digital space for a participatory process to debate, contrast and collect proposals. The tool is developed with free and open source software, so that it can be reused or improved! ❗️La Troca Sants | Escola comunitària de formació permanent
La Troca is a community space for ongoing training, a training project for young people and adults where we learn to develop as autonomous and critical people. La Troca is a meeting and learning space, open to all young and adult residents of the Sants neighborhoods (Sants, Badal, Hostafrancs, Font de la Guatlla and La Bordeta) of Barcelona, which does not have any public schools for young people and adults and with little training in basic skills. ⬇️

🔴Bloc4BCN Its purpose is to contribute to the development and socio-economic transformation of the city of Barcelona and the entire Catalan territory through raising awareness and promoting cooperativism, incubating and accelerating cooperatives, promoting inter-cooperation, local and international connections.

🟠La Lleialtat Santsenca is a municipal community management facility in the Sants neighborhood dedicated to promoting culture, neighborhood and cooperation. A space open to everyone who wants to be the home of the Santsenca people. A place of reference in the neighborhood from which to carry out initiatives.

🟢Abarka Cooperativa is a non-profit cooperative of social initiative, which was born from the need to self-organize as migrant and/or racialized people with the aim of providing solutions to certain problems derived from racism at the work and social levels. They believe in the power of gastronomy as a tool to generate quality job opportunities, while empowering people in the community by highlighting the richness of African cultures.

🟡 Mescladís is a social and non-profit project that was born in Barcelona in 2005. It is a space for raising awareness on issues related to immigration, diversity and sustainability, with cooking as a tool for intercultural encounters and catering as an economic activity for socio-labor inclusion.

🔵Ateneu Popular 9 Barris is a space open to new cultural, social and political activities, often far from official circuits, but essential to maintain a critical spirit and to promote creativity and diversity. Participation is the basis of the Ateneu through the community management model, based on the Commissions, Working Groups and Assemblies as sovereign spaces of the project.

An exciting 3 days in Barcelona are behind us! Below is the first part of a summary of our visit. 🥹 Follow us for more!🤓

🟠As part of our time in Barcelona, we visited civic spaces that, in various fields, support the growth of civic ideas and try to support citizens' efforts to become more empowered and decisive on issues important to them. Below you will find some of them:

🟣Fabra i Coats is a fundamental part of the Sant Andreu neighborhood of Barcelona and a key point for understanding its history. Since the late 19th century, Fabra i Coats has been an important point of Barcelona's growing textile industry. Today Culture, creativity, history and education coexist in more than 20,000m2 of rehabilitated warehouses, testimony to the industrial past of the Sant Andreu District.

🔵 Ateneu L'Harmonia is a local social and cultural facility that
occupies one of the renovated buildings of the Fabra i Coats factory site,
in the Sant Andreu neighborhood of Barcelona. The facility is intended
to host, facilitate and develop activities and proposals aimed at
neighboring entities, aimed at transforming reality, energizing and
developing the social, cultural and leisure fabric, empowering and
promoting associative and collective life, and achieving a more
participatory, creative, cohesive, innovative, cultural, supportive and
sustainable Sant Andreu de Palomar.

🟡 Antiga Fàbrica CAN BATLLÓ was built in the 19th century as a textile manufacturing industry, Can Batlló, with a surface area comparable to that of Camp Nou, was originally, alongside V***r Vell and Espanya Industrial, one of the most
important manufacturing bastions of the time. Today, after spending
more than 30 years in disuse, it is a space of public concession and
neighborhood management of great activity and initiative.
