Reimagined contact sheet of the other photo of the fallen soldier. In 1936, on the Córdoba front near Cerro Muriano, Robert Capa made the photograph later known as The Death of a Militiaman. No contact sheet or negatives from that day survive.

This piece imagines a missing possibility: a reconstruction of Capa’s vantage to evoke the unseen trials (those that perhaps never existed). It does not resolve the debate on staging and authenticity but inhabits its uncertainty (…!)

Reimagining: the Spanish Civil War looks to the heart of memory through recreated stories and archives, recovered forgotten relics, and photographs made with old methods that bridge our perspective of reality and time.

These and other stories will be on view from 7 November at the ¡former! Astra arms factory in Gernika, with the support of , collection work by and and Mateo Ortiz as frontline reporters.

In regions like the Sierra de la Culebra in Spain, wildfires go beyond being natural disasters. They are connected to important economic interests, land management practices, and the heavy timber industry. Our latest reportage explores how these fires are related with broader economic dynamics, affecting both the environment and local communities.

In collaboration with Elena Sánchez.

From series ‘Eroding Franco’.

1) From chains to waves: once a Francoist concentration camp, now a water park where memories fade into the waters of oblivion. This image juxtaposes an official record of the Francoist concentration camp in Torremolinos with a current aerial view of the exact location, now Aqualand. Investigations over the past decade by historian Carlos Blanco and various regional journalists have uncovered documents, including official reports and invoices, confirming the existence and details of the camp, further highlighting the region's complex history.

2) “Queridos amigos. Un saludo cariñoso desde este bonito lugar". (Dear friends, warm greetings from this beautiful place.) Reflecting on Spain's historical transformation during the late 1960s and '70s, this collection of postcards captures the dawn of mass tourism and the ushering in of an era driven by technical governance and economic expansion. They are time windows to a moment when Spain was on the cusp of change, evolving from post-war isolation to global exposure. Yet, beyond their sun-soaked facades lies the inception of an environmental trajectory that resonates profoundly with Spain's contemporary landscape challenges. Spain, April 2024.

3) Water Paradox in a thirsty land: Swimming pools within tourist apartments in Torrevieja, a town in the water-stressed southeastern corner of the Iberian Peninsula. Spain’s paradox and status as one of the countries with the highest number of swimming pools per capita worldwide, even as it contends with growing desertification and acute water scarcity. Torrevieja, July 2023.
