How far can offshore operational noise travel underwater?
During the SACET Project in the Gulf of Guinea, we recorded underwater sound at increasing distances from an offshore drilling vessel.
At around 8.5 nautical miles (15.7 km), operational noise strongly dominated the underwater soundscape.
At 15 nautical miles (27.8 km), humpback whale vocalisations were recorded while offshore operational noise remained clearly audible.
At approximately 18 nautical miles (33 km), s***m whale clicks and other cetacean vocal activity were recorded together with persistent operational noise.
These recordings show that the acoustic footprint of offshore operations can extend far beyond the immediate working area, overlapping with the acoustic habitat used by whales and dolphins for communication, orientation and other vital behaviours.
Understanding the real spatial extent of underwater noise is essential for designing effective monitoring and mitigation measures.
