On this day of remembrance, we honor the memory of all Holocaust victims, including the Roma community, who endured immense suffering and persecution alongside millions of others.

As we reflect on the past, we reaffirm our commitment to combating racism and spreading awareness, tolerance, and inclusion. Starting today, we are launching a communication campaign to share facts about the history of Roma communities and ways in which organizations and institutions can share such information in an inclusive non-harmful way.

The campaign aims to address the critical need for thoughtful and responsible communication about Roma people. In a landscape where numerous well-meaning organizations are active, there remains a significant risk that their messaging may unintentionally reinforce stereotypes about marginalized groups instead of challenging them.

This initiative seeks to promote more effective, respectful, and stereotype-breaking communication practices.

Today, Drom Kotar Mestipen, had their fourth workshop within the Roma Connect project. This time we had it with a group of first year students in the Department of Education at the University of Barcelona.

We highlighted the existing antigypsyism in the society and special focus was given to the discrimination in schools. Many students were unaware of the profound challenges and systemic discrimination faced by Roma students. Once again, we were reminded of the importance of our work and the value of the information we share.

On October 8, 2024, the 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, held at Barcelona City Hall and streamed online, gathered over 90 advocates, policymakers, and Roma community leaders in Barcelona to 𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢-𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 from Hungary 🇭🇺, Romania 🇷🇴, Greece 🇬🇷, and Spain 🇪🇸.

📜 The conference agenda united key advocates in the fight against anti-Roma racism and in support of Roma women’s empowerment. Opening remarks by Maria Eugènia Gay Rosell, Barcelona’s Second Deputy Mayor, highlighted the city’s dedication to diversity, followed by Veronica Santiago and Fernando Macías Aranda, who emphasized Roma Connect’s impact in breaking down racial barriers. Dr. Lena de Botton led a roundtable on “Upstander” responses to online hate speech, and Veronica Santiago presented Roma Connect’s achievements. The final session featured Roma women leaders sharing powerful personal stories, reinforcing the need for ongoing activism and policy change.

Initiatives like 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 are vital for creating spaces where the Roma community, especially Roma women, can 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. These gatherings 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞 and 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 to challenge stereotypes and advocate for equality.

Despite progress, research at the European Union level reveals that the Roma community 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, limiting their opportunities for growth and development.
