🇪🇺🏆 European Guanxi is honoured to receive the 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 (3rd place), awarded by the European Parliament and the Foundation of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen.

🇪🇺🇨🇳 This recognition shows that youth engagement matters and that following your passion can create real impact. We started with a simple belief: Europe needs 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱, 𝗽𝗮𝗻-𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗨–𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, and young professionals deserve a seat at the table in discussions on the defining issues of our time.

As Germany recalibrates its relationship with China, the conversation is increasingly shifting away from symbolic diplomacy toward the operational realities of economic security, industrial competitiveness, and strategic interdependence.

On May 22nd, European Guanxi will host Thomas König, Head of the China Department at the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), for a discussion on the evolving landscape of Germany–China economic relations and the broader transformation of Europe’s engagement with China.

Drawing on his experience across business representation, EU–China institutional relations, and policy advisory, Thomas König will explore how Germany is operationalising its China strategy in practice, from supply chain resilience and market access to the growing role of intermediary institutions navigating between business interests and geopolitical constraints.

The session will also provide insights into career pathways at the intersection of policy, business, and international affairs, particularly for young professionals interested in Europe–China relations.

⚙️ 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲: Innovation as a Bridge: Rethinking EU and China Relations Through Shared Problem-Solving

As EU–China relations mutate from partnership to competition, identifying neutral grounds for collaboration becomes essential. Structured innovation diplomacy – through joint labs, shared standards, and mission-driven projects – enables both sides to co-invent practical solutions while navigating strategic competition. Such engagement is critical to addressing shared global challenges, including climate change, urbanization, the circular economy, and public health.

This article takes the circular economy as a case study. Joint initiatives in battery recycling, e-waste recovery, and material traceability illustrate how technical collaboration can endure despite geopolitical tensions – a process that in itself strengthens diplomatic ties.

Joint problem-solving as a form of “innovation diplomacy” reframes the relationship from negotiation over national interests to co-creating solutions to shared global challenges. In a time of heightened geopolitical tension, this practical diplomacy offers one of the most resilient pathways for maintaining constructive relations between Europe and China.

In the past weeks, our team has been featured twice on Radiotelevisión Española. Our President René Neumann joined Europa Abierta to discuss EU-China relations and the project’s journey, while Valentín Betrán Conte spoke to Radio 4 about our recognition with the European Charlemagne Youth Prize.

European Guanxi has been selected by Spain as its candidate for the prize, with the ceremony taking place on 12 May.

With the 15th Five-Year Plan officially approved during the National People’s Congress in March, Beijing has charted a clear course for the years ahead. The message is definitive: China is shifting its focus from quantitative expansion to high-quality development.

The central pillar of this new phase is “New Quality Productivity,” a vision that prioritises economic efficiency and technological innovation over growth at all costs. By aiming to grow core digital industries to 12.5% of GDP and ensuring annual R&D spending remains above 7%, China is building a foundation for unprecedented economic resilience.

This document is far more than a domestic roadmap. It serves as a crucial signal to global actors and international partners who are ready to engage with a development path increasingly driven by high-tech breakthroughs and strategic stability. 🌍
