Half a century on from the start of EUโ€“China diplomatic ties, the relationship has entered a more sobering phase, defined less by anniversary retrospection than by the search for a coherent European posture amid widening trade asymmetries, technological dependence, and the rise of economic security as a governing principle. This volume brings together young European researchers examining the firms, laboratories, universities, platforms, and farms where the future of EUโ€“China relations is being quietly negotiated.

In this video, President Renรฉ Neumann and Secretary-General Xaver Haack share recognitions that European Guanxi has proudly received in the past term: the Charlemagne Youth Prize, an interview with the EUโ€™s Ambassador to China Jorge Toledo, and two features on Spanish national radio.

European Guanxi made its debut at Peking University in Shenzhen, joined a panel at the European Chamber of Commerce in China, and built collaborations with the Dutch governmentโ€™s China Knowledge Network and the Irish governmentโ€™s Enterprise Ireland China.

Behind it all, we strengthened our editorial backbone: a new journal review team of established professionals, two new series (Guanxi Dialogues and Guanxi Explains), and a body of work spanning 16 newsletter editions, 18 podcast episodes, and 36 blog pieces.

None of this would have happened without our 100+ staff members, our partners, and our supporters.

The best of European Guanxi is still ahead.

Chinaโ€™s gig economy: a buffer, not yet a solution. ๐Ÿ›ต

Flexible short-term work (้›ถๅทฅ) now accounts for an estimated 44% of Chinaโ€™s workforce; over 300 million people. Projected to reach 320 million in 2026, up from 280 million the year before.

The drivers are structural: a weak property market, automation displacing jobs, and a record 10M+ university graduates in 2025. Gig work absorbs the slack and quietly cushions an unemployment rate that has held near 4.5% for a decade.

But scale brings strain. Algorithmic deadlines push workers toward risk. The Hukou system leaves many cut off from local healthcare and schooling. Thin social-insurance participation compounds a looming pension shortfall.

Beijing is responding. New 2026 measures, including mandatory algorithm filing, rest prompts, idle-time pay, and nationwide occupational injury insurance, signal a real push to formalise protections.

The open questions remain: enforcement, loopholes, and who absorbs the cost. For now, the gig economy is being managed rather than resolved.

What is your read on where this goes next? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Erling Haaland has become one of the most popular footballers on Chinese social media. From viral videos to massive fan engagement across local platforms, his online presence has turned into a cultural phenomenon that goes far beyond football.

While his success on the pitch has certainly played a role, his popularity in China has also been fueled by memes, fan edits, and a strong connection with local audiences.

Why has Haaland become such a huge hit on Chinese social media? Letโ€˜s discuss in the comments! ๐Ÿ‘‡

POV: You actually take the leap and move to China for your Masterโ€™s. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณโœˆ๏ธ

We asked Francesca, Tony, and Renรฉ, who are currently doing their postgraduate degrees in International Relations, Global Affairs, and Chinese Studies, what itโ€™s actually like. Spoiler: it completely changes your perspective.

Sure, studying in Mandarin and stepping out of your comfort zone is a challenge, but waking up every day in a place that pushes you to think outside the box, making friends from all over the world, and connecting with the local culture makes it worth it.

Their advice? Stay curious, talk to the locals, eat the food, and travel as much as you can.

Canton Fair 2026: Spring Phase 3

The spring session closed with Phase 3, where the worldโ€™s largest trade bridge turned to the things people actually wear, carry, and consume. Innovation was not a buzzword on those floors, but the baseline. From sustainable textiles to smart health products, Phase 3 showed a consumer trade built on responsible sourcing and design that lasts.

Five days in Guangzhou, where global buyers met the makers behind the shelves: apparel, footwear, bags, home textiles, food, and health.

Which hall would you walk first?

๐ŸŒ ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐˜„ ๐—”๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฒ: The Global AI Governance Standoff: A Prisonerโ€™s Dilemma? by Giacomo Savarese

Artificial intelligence (AI) is developing faster than the rules meant to govern it. Because AI supply chains, cyber risks, labour impacts, and environmental costs cross borders, national regulation alone cannot solve the problem. Yet global governance remains weak because the main players are competing to define the rules of the AI age. The U.S. prioritises innovation and private-sector leadership, China links AI governance to sovereignty and state-led development, and the EU tries to turn regulation and trust into geopolitical influence. This competition creates a prisonerโ€™s dilemma: cooperation would reduce mutual risks, but each side fears losing precious, marginal advantages. The EU should therefore look for areas where cooperation serves its interests, particularly on open-source AI, while using its regulatory credibility to shape governance standards that reflect its own values.
