At the European Ecovillage Gathering 2026, Martin Winiecki opened his keynote by pressing us to look closer at what our communities actually do in a time of ecological and social strain. Are they becoming spaces of retreat for those who can afford them, or are they stepping into something wider?

That means asking uncomfortable questions about power, accessibility, economic structures, and accountability - about how we relate to the places and people beyond our gates. The future likely won’t be built by isolated utopias, but by networks of solidarity capable of regenerating bioregions and widening the circle of care.

For a deeper dive, including practical guidance on moving in this direction, read Martin’s Martin Winiecki essay “Community Beyond Escape,” an expanded version of his talk.

The memories are settling in, but we’re still carrying everything this Gathering has brought us with such full hearts. We are so deeply grateful to everybody who contributed to this Gathering: to the volunteers, speakers, artists, and every single soul who showed up to co-create this space together. Special thanks go to our incredible hosts, Nature Community, for welcoming us so beautifully.

This year’s participants reminded us why we do this:
"Because it's not just a musical festival or a vacation. It poses real questions, brings people from all walks of life, united in love of nature."
