📚 Lusseau, D. (2006). Why do dolphins jump? Interpreting the behavioural repertoire of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.) in Doubtful Sound, New Zealand.Behavioural Processes, 73(3), 257–265.

--------------

🇬🇧 Jumping is one of the most conspicuous aerial behaviours of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.), but it does not necessarily serve the same function on every occasion.

🔬 A study by Lusseau (2006) on bottlenose dolphins in Doubtful Sound, New Zealand, showed that different aerial behaviours did not belong to a single behavioural category, indicating that jumps may have different functions depending on the context.

Jumps may occur during travelling, feeding or social interactions and, in some contexts, may contribute to communication between individuals or fights. Understanding a jump therefore requires considering not only the aerial behaviour itself, but also what the group was doing before, during and after it occurred.

🇬🇧 The rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) is an odontocete mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical waters, whose acoustic behaviour remains relatively poorly studied.

🔬 In the eastern Canary Islands, we analysed 396 whistles from this species and identified eight different whistle contour types. Stepped whistles were the most frequent (31.8%), followed by mixed (18.9%) and ascending-plateau whistles (11.4%).

Whistles had a mean duration of approximately 0.43 seconds, with mean minimum and maximum frequencies of 5.2 and 8.1 kHz, respectively.

This study provides the first characterization of the whistle repertoire of Steno bredanensis in the North Atlantic and contributes new information to our understanding of the acoustic communication of this still poorly known species.

🐬In June, we recorded an interesting observation at sea: a group of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) with a female and a neonate.

📷The observation of a newborn provides valuable information on the reproductive ecology and occurrence of common dolphins in Canary waters and contributes to our understanding of the species’ life cycle in the archipelago.

🤗Long-term monitoring is essential to improve our knowledge of population dynamics, reproductive patterns, habitat use and seasonal movements, and to provide a stronger scientific basis for conservation. ⚓️

🔎 Did you know? Neonate dolphins can be identified by several characteristic features, including visible fetal folds along the body, tactile hairs around the rostrum.

🇬🇧 New open-access paper!

🧪This study provides the first comprehensive genetic data on pygmy and dwarf s***m whales from several eastern North Atlantic countries.

🧑🏼‍🔬Mitochondrial DNA from 56 stranded individuals revealed weak or absent population structure in Kogia breviceps, while Kogia sima showed a clear division between Atlantic–Mediterranean and Indo-Pacific lineages.

🤗These findings expand the genetic knowledge of both species and support the existence of cryptic diversity within K. sima.
